As the sun sets on summer and a crispness fills the air, a familiar buzz of energy returns. It's that time of year again when the campus comes alive with the infectious enthusiasm of its students. Whether they're starting a new adventure or reaching the final stretch of their UVic journey, there's a certain magic in the air when students step back onto campus grounds.

Get ready to applaud the return of our talented theatre students as they transform stories into vibrant stage experiences. Our upcoming season promises a captivating blend of timeless classics, a toe-tapping tribute to Broadway show tunes and a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) production from Staging Equality.

The Staging Equality team who brought you Journey to Mapu (2021), Kamloopa: An Indigenous Matriarch Story (2021), Im:print (2022) and It's Just Black Hair (2023) is back with more performances for, with, and about Indigenous, Black, and people of colour.

This added show premieres two original performances inspired by children's storybooks. Using movement and imagery to tell the stories, local IBPoC artists collaborate with UVic students, the Staging Equality faculty and community partners to bring you these thought-provoking tales.

The Woman Who Outshone the Sun

The Woman Who Outshone the Sun is a Latin American folk tale. It tells the story of a mysterious and radiant woman arriving in a small village. Themes of judgement, discrimination and the true meaning of forgiveness are woven against the backdrop of nature, land and the precarity of these natural gifts.

Shi-shi-etko is a heartfelt children's story that traces the journey of a young Indigenous girl as she prepares to leave her family and attend residential school. It examines culture, family and the teachings of the Indigenous ways of knowing and being as seen through the eyes of a little girl.
