UVic Music e-Pulse January 2020
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 8 | 12:30 PM Johannes Brahms composed lieder throughout his career. His earliest songs through to his last ones are supremely expressive and superbly crafted. Surprisingly, only a few of them are frequently performed. Lieder at Lunch, featuring husband-and-wife duo, soprano Sharon Krebs and pianist Harald Krebs, presents a cross-section of Brahms’s lieder output, including many unknown gems as well as some familiar songs. Prominent violist and conductor Yariv Aloni will join for a performance of one of Brahms’s two songs with viola, and UVic School of Music alumna Deanna Sills will collaborate in a delightful vocal duet. This popular concert series is devoted to the exploration of the rich repertoire of German art songs (lieder). Their performances are often augmented with talk, projected images and text translations. Bring your lunch! Rm. B037, MacLaurin Building, B-Wing | Free
SUNDAY, JANUARY 12 | 2:30 PM Theory professor and pianist Harald Krebs brings together his love and knowledge of song repertoire in a concert featuring faculty brass and some special guests. Together they will delight audiences with arrangements of songs by German, French, and Spanish composers. The concert title is a pun on Felix Mendelssohn’s most famous song, On Wings of Song, which will open the concert. With trombonist Scott MacInnes and principal horn of the Victoria Symphony Alana Despins, Krebs will perform songs by Johannes Brahms and Mendelssohn. Songs by Fanny Hensel—including two unpublished, recently transcribed songs—will feature trumpeter Merrie Klazek. Joined by tubist Paul Beauchesne, Krebs will play Gustav Mahler’s youthful Songs of a Wayfarer. The Sobremesa Quartet, a talented group of saxophonists from the studio of professor Wendell Clanton, will play arrangements by Sharon and Harald Krebs of songs by Josephine Lang. The afternoon will close with arrangements of vocal duets by Robert Schumann and the almost unknown composer Richard Roessler, with the aforementioned musicians in various configurations. Phillip T. Our students, faculty, guest performers and concert goers have been appreciating the beauty and quality of these incredible instruments ever since. Proceeds from this concert will benefit our Steinway Legacy Fund, dedicated to the enhancement and expansion of our valuable collection instruments. Celebration concerts include UBC's Mark Anderson on March 5, Emerging Steinway Stars—featuring School of Music piano students—on March 12, and Bruce Vogt on March 15.
