The Seagull

Anton Chekov's masterpiece of heartbreaking comedy

Perhaps the classic statement about life in the theatre, The Seagull explores the human cost of success, and failure, in the world of art. On a country estate in pre-Revolutionary Russia, a famous actress and her neglected son act out their disappointments against a tragi-comic backdrop of artistic idealism, vanity, and unrequited love. As they strut and fret their hours upon the stage, Chekhov's supremely loveable characters guide us to a deepened appreciation of the complex relation between art and life.

MEDIA REVIEWS

"What a theatrical feast!  The Phoenix Theatres' production of Anton Chekhov's plan The Seagull is undeniably one of the most satisfying and mature productions the theatre has offered audiences in recent memory."

 - Colin Plant, The Martlet

"Jane Duncan's costumes are attractive and detailed, giving the production a stamp of authenticity."

- Adrian Chamberlain, Times Colonist

"The Phoenix production of Chekhov's first major success as a playwright does have a few redeeming qualities.  The Russian singing is lovely and combined well with the elegant costumes and vodka, to set the eastern Slavic scene."

- Ingrid Paulsen, Saanich News

"This show has all the usual strengths of a UVic Theatre Department production: great costumes showing precise attention to detail; a beautifully constructed, albeit slightly quirky set; inventive sound design and superior lighting effects."

- Ian Cochran, Monday Magazine
