If this sounds like you, join the Lafayette String Quartet and UVic’s Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health for their annual health forum where this year’s topic will examine the toll that digital multitasking is having on our well-being. Guest speaker Paul Mohapel—neuroscientist and Associate Faculty at Royal Roads University—will report on recent startling research and scientific data about some of the negative impacts digital distraction and multitasking are having on our behaviour and neurological capacities. He will present strategies to create more balanced and healthy interactions with technology. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 | 7 PM Kay Larson, author of Where the heart beats: John Cage, Zen Buddhism and the Inner Life of Artists, discusses and directs a performance of John Cage’s Lecture on Nothing, performed by UVic students and community members. First performed at the 8th Street Artists’ Club in New York in 1949, the lecture is written as a piece of music organized around a series of “empty” time intervals or durations. The central statement of the lecture, ‘I have nothing to say and I’m saying it’ reads as an oxymoron at first, but when considered further reveals Cage’s inquiry into Zen. In this lecture, Larson explores how the “emptiness” that Cage was seeking is embodied in the “nothing” of Lecture on Nothing. Her insights are embodied in a performance structured as a proposition on emptiness. This event is part of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria's convening In the Present Moment: Buddhism, Contemporary Art, & Social Practice. Phillip T. Young Recital Hall | Free
