Erasing Cultural Memory:
Music and the impact of war

An evening of guest performances and lectures featuring:
Connie Gitlin, clarinet
Adam Dobres, guitar
The Orontes Guitar Quartet
Julia Riegel
, Author of Cultural Erasure, Cultural Endurance: Music in the Warsaw Ghetto
And UVic faculty including Charlotte Schallie (Germanic and Slavic Studies), Kristin Semmens (History), and Suzanne Snizek and Alexander Dunn (Music)

Life in the Warsaw ghetto during the Holocaust was characterized by intense deprivation and a struggle to survive, but for a time, the ghetto was also home to a thriving musical culture. Join this diverse group of musicians and scholars to discuss historical and contemporary instances of war, and explore the impact of war-time conflict upon musicians and musical cultures.

Connie Gitlin is renown as an outstanding and versatile clarinetist. A leading Canadian Klezmer artist, she has also served as principal clarinet with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Canadian Chamber Orchestra, Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and Colorado Philharmonic.

The Orontes Guitar Quartet is in residence at UVic through the support of the Artist Protection Fund of the NYC-based Institute of International Education, and are mentored by Alexander Dunn. Their dramatic story of escape from Syria and success in Canada is a narrative of hope and art persisting in the midst of calamity. The quartet performs many musical styles, including blues, jazz, flamenco, baroque, classical, Latin and folk.

Julie Riegel is a PhD candidate in Modern European History at Indiana University Bloomington (USA). Riegel’s research interests include modern Polish-Jewish cultural history, the Holocaust, and music during war and genocide. Her visit is made possible by the Campus Outreach Lecture Program of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, supported by the Anne and Harry Chinitz Campus Outreach Lecture Fund.

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Canada and mental health is a serious risk factor. In a remarkable series of concerts marking World Suicide Awareness Week, the Mysterious Barricades Concert Society endeavours to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, as well as deliver a message of hope. The concert series, which concludes at the University of Victoria on Sept. 14, takes place in 15 Canadian cities from coast to coast.

School of Music voice professor Benjamin Butterfield has been collaborating with the Mysterious Barricades Concert Society since 2016 to organize concerts in Victoria. His friend and music colleague, Elizabeth Turnbull, tragically lost her husband due to mental illness. As a way of processing the loss, Turnbull approached her singing colleagues from across the country to participate in this initiative. With a mandate of bringing greater awareness to the prevalence of suicide in our society, Mysterious Barricades aims to open a dialogue about understanding and prevention on local, provincial and national levels through music, while also raising funds to education and support those at risk and those affected.

All 15 concerts will be streamed online on Sept. 14.
