Faculty Concert: Alexander Dunn, guitar
Friday, September 28 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Alexander Dunn, guitar
With Cuarteto Chroma
Simon MacDonald and David Visentin, violins
And members of the Lafayette String Quartet
Classical guitar virtuoso Alexander Dunn is joined by a host of guest string players in a unique concert of string (and guitar) music. UVic’s graduate string quartet, Cuarteto Chroma, new Victoria Conservatory of Music faculty violinists, Simon MacDonald and David Visentin, plus Lafayette String Quartet violinist Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni will all share the stage for this Faculty Concert Series event.
Familiar masterworks will be paired with some unknown gems on a program featuring Cuarteto de Cuerdas by Victoria guitarist and composer, Liova Bueno (MMus ’12), as well as Quintetto for Guitar & Strings by Leo Brouwer, Cuba’s musical treasure. You’ll also hear Felix Mendelssohn’s magnificent Octet Op. 20, a stunning achievement for the composer who was only 16 years old at the time it was written. Rounding out the concert is the Canadian premiere of Ferdinand Rebay’s Kleine Fantasie for guitar and string quartet, an expressive exploration of Brahms’ song ‘O wüsst ich doch den weg zurück…’
Dunn has performed to enthusiastic acclaim in Canada, and around the globe. In solo recital, concerto, and chamber music he is consistently praised for his musicality, technique and rich sound. An experienced chamber musician, he has worked with principal players from the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik, in duo concerts with guitarist Pepe Romero, and with numerous other musicians and vocalists.
