UVic’s Department of Writing celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Harvey Stevenson Southam Guest Lectureship program with a moderated panel discussion. Join six former Harvey Southam Guest Lecturers and one recent Writing graduate for this lively debate on the past, present, and future of journalism in Canada and around the world.

Free and open to the public. Followed by a book signing and reception.

The panel is made up of six former Harvey Southam guest lecturers and one recent UVic Writing graduate:

  • Jody Paterson (experiential journalism), former Times-Colonist columnist
  • Terry Glavin (foreign affairs), Ottawa Citizen columnist and author of Come From the Shadows: The Long and Lonely Struggle for Peace in Afghanistan
  • JoAnn Roberts (public broadcasting), former host of CBC’s All Points West
  • Tom Hawthorn (sports media), freelance writer and author of The Year Canadians Lost Their Minds
  • Mark Leiren-Young (satire), freelancer writer and author of The Killer Whale Who Changed the World
  • Vivian Smith (women in journalism), former Globe & Mail editor and author of Outsiders Still: Why Women Journalists Love — and Leave — Their Newspaper Careers
  • Quinn MacDonald, publisher/editor of Concrete Garden magazine
  • Moderated by David Leach, UVic Writing Chair and author of Chasing Utopia: The Future of the Kibbutz in a Divided Israel
