The Professional Writing Minor Program

About the Professional Writing Minor

The goal of the Professional Writing Minor in Journalism and Publishing is to introduce students to professional industry standards and to develop the skills required to succeed as a writer and editor in print and electronic journalism and publishing.

With a faculty busy and productive in the industry, UVic Professional Writing students exchange ideas and work within a real-world environment encompassing all the expected guidelines and deadlines they'll be exposed to upon entering the market place.

The Director of the Professional Writing Minor is Lee Henderson. Questions about the program can be directed to him at prowriting@uvic.ca.

Professional Writing Co-op

The Professional Writing Co-op offers undergraduate students enrolled in the Professional Writing Minor the opportunity to apply their skills and gain paid work experience through the Humanities, Fine Arts and Professional Writing Co-op program.

While the co-op option is not mandatory, it is highly recommended, and priority for admission in certain courses will be given to those students taking the co-op option.

Program Requirements

Before declaring a Professional Writing Minor, students must take 3.0 units from the following, with a grade of B or better in each course: WRIT 100, 102, 140; ENGL 115, 135, 146, 147, 215; ENGR 240.
