The Professional Writing Minor

Advanced Standing

If you have studied professional writing at another institution or have professional experience, you may wish to apply for advanced standing in the minor. Attaining advanced standing will allow you to bypass the 3.0 unis of first year courses and WRIT 215 depending on your experience.

Written applications for advanced standing should be submitted to the director of professional writing by April 15th to receive advanced standing.

Permission to enter the professional writing minor at an advanced level may be given to students who:

  • satisfy the minor's standards
  • have course equivalents to WRIT 102: Introduction to Journalism
  • submit a portfolio of journalistic writing that includes at least three published articles in a range of styles and lengths (e.g. news, editorial, review, profile, feature)

Students are advised to check the minor requirements before registering in professional writing courses.
