He has a B.A. and an M.A. from the University of British Columbia, and taught English and Creative Writing at the University of Victoria from 1969 to 2004, serving two three-year terms as the Chair of the Department of Writing, and six years (1992-1998) as editor of The Malahat Review. His latest collection, Past Imperfect, Present Tense, explores the effects of geographical displacement on the psyche and language of the emigrant or traveler with wry musings among ironies. Over his career, Derk has written eleven collections of poetry, a collection of fiction, One Cook, Once Dreaming, and published several works translated from the German of H.C. Artmann, Erich Wolfgang Skwara and Dorothea Grünzweig. He lives in Victoria with his wife Eva.
