WRIT 322: Magazine Publishing

Calendar Description:

An introduction to the theory, craft and business of writing, editing, and designing magazine stories for print and electronic publication.

Recent Summary:

Writing 322 is a professional writing course in magazine journalism. While the focus will be on generating ideas and writing magazine articles, we will also discuss editing, publishing, page layout and the business side of the magazine industry. Students will be graded on three individual written assignments (short article, query letter, feature article), in-class and on-line participation, and a major group project (a pitch and proposal for a new magazine). The actual word count for the writing assignments isn’t large compared to other classes. However, the reading, brainstorming, research and revising required for each project will keep you busy, as well as the out-of-class time necessary to develop a magazine prototype for your group project.
