A lecture course in the theory and practice of journalism in Canada with an emphasis on local news beat writing.

Recent Summary:

Continues the study of the theory and practice of journalism in Canada. With a strong emphasis on local news beat writing, this course takes a professional, hands-on approach to learning. Students examine and practice foundational journalistic writing techniques and develop basic reporting skills, including spotting newsworthy stories, carrying out reliable research, conducting probing interviews, synthesizing information, and self-editing to create solid, timely news articles. Students also briefly review the historical, economic, legal and cultural context of contemporary journalism, and monitor news sources and current events.
