About Us

The University of Victoria's Department of Visual Arts is a dynamic and creative academic environment, home to a faculty of brilliant practicing artists, 250 undergraduate students, and 11 graduate students. Join us to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts, a Master of Fine Arts, or even a Combined Major in Visual Art and Computer Science.

We offer instruction in the following disciplines:

Audain Professorship

The Audain Professorship in Contemporary Art Practice of the Pacific Northwest—the result of a $2-million gift from celebrated BC art philanthropist and National Gallery of Canada board chair Michael Audain and the Audain Foundation—has seen such distinguished practicing First Nations artists as Rebecca Belmore and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas teach in the Department of Visual Arts.

Visiting Artist Lecture Series

The Department of Visual Arts is enriched by our prestigious Visiting Artist Lecture Series, which gives our students vital opportunities to engage with contemporary artists from across Canada and around the world.

Co-operative Education Program

Our students are eligible to participate in the Humanities, Fine Arts and Professional Writing Co-operative Education Program, a year-round program which enables students to combine work experience with their Visual Arts training by alternating studies with paid terms working for government, theatres, galleries, libraries, arts groups, newspapers, publishers, private firms and more.
