David Gifford

Office location: Visual Arts Building

Areas of Research & Creative Activity

David Gifford makes work in drawing, sculpture, and performance. His interpretations of the peripheral landscape through stone carving are made in their relation to the artist’s study of Agriculture, Magic, and Canadian Regionalism as applied to craft processes. His highly stylized performance, as a magician, has contributed to making sense of an interdisciplinary art practice that, for him, is primarily motivated by categories of surprise and collective memory. He covertly operates a traditional academic drawing style in an atmosphere of conceptualism. Gifford is a founding member of the Ministry of Casual Living, Artist run Centre in Victoria, British Columbia, est. 2002.
