The Student Alternative Theatre Company is an amateur, not-for-profit theatre company that seeks to provide opportunities for all students to develop skills and gain knowledge in an educational environment. Independent from the University, SATco is a company for the students, by the students; striving to produce strong theatre.
The Student Alternative Theatre Company was formed in the early nineties, a decade or so after the Theatre Department moved out of “Q Hut” and into its own Phoenix Building here at the University of Victoria. SATCo continues today with a yearly season of four plays in each semester. The company runs its productions in the McIntyre Studio, in the Phoenix Theatre building between 4:30 and 6:00 p.m., and is sponsored in venue and equipment inventory by the Department of Theatre. The SATCo board, a democratically elected body of student representatives, selects the season of shows in two batches of applications and runs day-to-day logistics.
SATCo has always been theatre for students by students, and we stand by that. The company came about to offer students in the department more opportunities to explore their creativity. Over the course of our ten week season we give students the tools to design, act, direct, stage-manage and crew real pieces of theatre.
SATCo is a student ran organization and is governed by a board of directors, a management team, and four full time staff. We strive to offer students opportunities that the department can’t. We work very closely with the department of Theatre at Uvic to make sure everything is up to University standards and that nothing deemed unsafe or detrimental in any way to the students or student body is performed.
The best way to find out what we’re about is to come see a show! Wednesday,Thursday and Friday afternoons every week during noon hours – that is, from 12:45-1:45 pm Barbara McIntyre Theatre. Suggested donation of $4.
