(Photo: John Threlfall)<\/p><\/div><p>The idea of artists working with scientists is nothing new to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/finearts\/theatre\/graduate\/current-students\/graduate\/gupa-dennis.php\"><strong>Dennis Gupa<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<figcaption><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A PhD candidate in UVic\u2019s <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/finearts\/theatre\/\">theatre department<\/a>, Gupa is also the current artist-in-residence with <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oceannetworks.ca\/\">Ocean Networks Canada<\/a> (ONC), a UVic initiative. He sees the artistic residency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/news\/topics\/2018+onc-artist-residency-colton-hash+media-release\">launched<\/a> by the Faculty of Fine Arts and ONC two years ago, as a natural fit with his doctoral focus on Indigenous sea rituals, climate change and sustainable ecology.<\/p>\n<p>While Gupa\u2019s term at ONC will wrap up this spring, he\u2019s also finishing his doctoral work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/finearts\/theatre\/undergraduate\/major\/applied\/index.php\">applied theatre<\/a>\u00a0under the supervision of theatre professor<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/finearts\/theatre\/people\/profiles\/faculty\/sadeghi-yekta-kirsten.php\">Kirsten Sadeghi-Yetka<\/a><\/strong>, whose experience in community-engaged research includes projects in Indigenous language revitalization through theatre with children in the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, young people in Brazilian favelas, young women in rural areas of Cambodia and students with special needs in schools in The Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>As with any applied theatre practitioner, Gupa also wants to use the tools of theatre and drama to help bring about social change and build a sense of community\u2014and, in his case, to attempt to grapple with the gravity of global warming especially in the island nations of the world.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Using theatre for social change - UVic Applied Theatre PhD candidate Dennis Gupa\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yrJLsKM5ph4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; min_height=&#8221;1971px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||15px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221;]<h2>Strengthening connections between art and science<\/h2>\n<p>Sharing stories is exactly what Gupa has in mind with the ONC initiative: recently repositioned as an opportunity for Fine Arts graduate students, <a class=\"external\" href=\"https:\/\/finearts.uvic.ca\/research\/blog\/2020\/01\/06\/grad-student-call-for-ocean-networks-canada-artist-in-residence-program\/\">the ONC artist-in-residence program<\/a> exists to strengthen connections between art and science, and ignite cross-disciplinary exchanges around the major issues facing oceans today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This residency program comes at a time of crisis in ocean sustainability,&#8221; ONC chief scientist<strong> Kim Juniper<\/strong>. &#8220;Science-art collaborations such as this one bring together the\u00a0insight and power of two ways of looking at the world, and will hopefully lead to\u00a0new understanding and\u00a0greater benefits for our ocean and our future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the pandemic is complicating Gupa\u2019s original idea to create an immersive, ONC data-fueled performance experience involving the Filipino diaspora community\u2014including playwright <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canadianfilipino.net\/sections\/arts\/canadian-filipino-karla-comanda-bags-2017-emerging-writer-award\">Karla Comanda<\/a>, classical singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jeremiah-mari-carag-3b0a0b23\/?originalSubdomain=ca\">Jeremiah Carag<\/a>, Philippine-based composer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/uplbchoralensemble\/posts\/darren-vega-is-one-of-the-countrys-best-young-composers-true-enough-we-give-you-\/10157543122156655\/\">Darren Vega<\/a>\u00a0and Vietnamese-Canadian\u00a0actor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0494716\/bio\">Thai-Hoa Le<\/a>\u2014Gupa is still hopeful about uniting these two worlds during his spring 2021 residency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can we share our stories with the scientists, and what does that mean to them to listen to immigrants?\u201d Gupa ponders. \u201cHow does our history of exile connect with the history of climate disaster? We\u2019ve never really tapped into that or discussed it in a scientific space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Gupa, the ONC residency is less a challenge and more a cumulative opportunity between his artistic and academic pursuits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lesson in fluidity that this water is teaching me and I\u2019d like to bring that to the fore in my work \u2026 it\u2019s not just a fascination, but water is so embodied in my work as an artist. It\u2019s beautiful but it\u2019s also dangerous. (Photo: Migrante Manitoba FB web page)<\/p><\/div>\n<h2>Social justice for the seas<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhen we think of the water, I think of social justice,\u201d Gupa adds. \u201cAs an archipelagic country surrounded by water, the Philippines have been suffering from ocean disasters due to climate change: resources are depleting, coral are bleaching, fish are dying and the waters are warming so the fish don\u2019t have food. So what do they do? With his country being a former colony\u2014extending across 7,600 islands and known for its maritime history, marine diversity and Indigenous population\u2014the parallels between the Philippines and Vancouver Island are clear to Gupa. He says this is probably the reason he decided to do his grad studies at UVic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By looking at the experience and knowledge of local people\u2014who have been experiencing these climatic events for so many years, but are not really given a lot of opportunities to tell their stories\u2014we can learn from their knowledge and wisdom,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Our poetries and songs renew our kinship with the ocean.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gupa\u2019s research focuses on traditional ways of knowing, as well as storytelling and applied theatre, and how these elements can be drawn into important discussions and dialogue in support of social justice, community participation and climate action.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15008\" style=\"width: 807px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15008\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15008\" src=\"http:\/\/finearts.uvic.ca\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1.-DG_kids.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"541\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A youth theatre project in 2015 co-directed by Gupa for a rural high school \u201cglee club\u201d in the Philippines. Gupa says, \u201cI create interdisciplinary work with a kinship among knowledge disciplines. One of the fascinating functions of an artist is being an interlocutor, bringing people together to share our stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He conducted field work in the Samar-Leyte region of the Philippines, working closely with local elders on the island community of Guiuan, where the super typhoon Yolanda in 2013\u2014one of the deadliest on record\u2014first made landfall.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; min_height=&#8221;1537.6px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||0px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; min_height=&#8221;1459.6px&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-43px|||||&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;0px|||||&#8221;]<h2>Interdisciplinary conversations on global issues<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to collaborating with ONC at UVic, Gupa was a visiting graduate research fellow at UVic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/research\/centres\/csrs\/\">Centre for Studies in Religion and Society<\/a> in 2019\/20 and a recipient of a 2017 student research fellowship from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/research\/centres\/capi\/\">Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives<\/a> at UVic. He is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/home-accueil.html\">Vanier Scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Scientists spend hours in their labs thinking about their work, similar to what theatre and performance artists do in their rehearsal spaces,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We\u2019re all exploring and searching for meaning; this kind of interdisciplinary conversation simply lets us be better adjusted to global issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dennis Gupa -- Sea rituals, applied theatre and science\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lC1MWB6Gsr8?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gupa also spent a decade at the<a href=\"https:\/\/uplb.edu.ph\/main\/\"> University of the Philippines Los Ba\u00f1os<\/a> where, in addition to teaching theatre, he was named the first head of the Office of Arts and Science Fusion Program.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, Gupa received a grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asianculturalcouncil.org\/\">Asian Cultural Council<\/a> (established by John D. (Photo: Migrante Manitoba FB web page)[\/caption]<h2>Social justice for the seas<\/h2><p>\u201cWhen we think of the water, I think of social justice,\u201d Gupa adds. \u201cAs an archipelagic country surrounded by water, the Philippines have been suffering from ocean disasters due to climate change: resources are depleting, coral are bleaching, fish are dying and the waters are warming so the fish don\u2019t have food. So what do they do? They migrate, just like Filipinos\u2014fish are the first climate refugees.\u201d<\/p><p>Gupa has also been looking at how climate change has impacted Canadian Filipino diaspora communities, with whom he created and then toured a highly collaborative theatrical production in 2018 (Victoria, Vancouver, Winnipeg).<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_14754\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"800\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-14754\" src=\"http:\/\/finearts.uvic.ca\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Dennis-Gupa-2018-show_IMG_7023_Fiona-Ngai.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/> Gupa performing the mask of Imelda Marcos during his production of \"Murupuro\". (Photo: Fiona Ngai)[\/caption]<h2>Interdisciplinary conversations on global issues<\/h2><p>In addition to collaborating with ONC at UVic, Gupa was a visiting graduate research fellow at UVic\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/research\/centres\/csrs\/\">Centre for Studies in Religion and Society<\/a> in 2019\/20 and a recipient of a 2017 student research fellowship from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/research\/centres\/capi\/\">Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives<\/a> at UVic. He is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/vanier.gc.ca\/en\/home-accueil.html\">Vanier Scholar<\/a>.<\/p><p>\"Scientists spend hours in their labs thinking about their work, similar to what theatre and performance artists do in their rehearsal spaces,\" he says. \"We\u2019re all exploring and searching for meaning; this kind of interdisciplinary conversation simply lets us be better adjusted to global issues.\"<\/p><p>Gupa also spent a decade at the<a href=\"https:\/\/uplb.edu.ph\/main\/\"> University of the Philippines Los Ba\u00f1os<\/a> where, in addition to teaching theatre, he was named the first head of the Office of Arts and Science Fusion Program.<\/p><p>In 2011, Gupa received a grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asianculturalcouncil.org\/\">Asian Cultural Council<\/a> (established by John D. Rockefeller III) for six months in as the director-in-residence with <a href=\"http:\/\/ma-yitheatre.org\/\">Ma-Yi Theatre Company<\/a> in New York City.<\/p><p>His collaborative work has also won support from the British Columbia Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, World Bank Manila Office\/Australian Agency for International Development, ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity and the Dharmasiswa Scholarship through the Indonesian government\u2019s Ministry of Education, among many others.<\/p><p>Gupa has an MFA Directing (Theatre) degree from UBC and an MA (Theatre) from University of the Philippines.<\/p>[caption id=\"attachment_14750\" align=\"aligncenter\" width=\"1920\"]<img class=\"size-full wp-image-14750\" src=\"http:\/\/finearts.uvic.ca\/research\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/IMG_4491_1920x1080.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/> Gupa wearing a traditional Filipino malong at a local beach in Victoria.
