The Governor General award-winning play Kamloopa: An Indigenous Matriarch Story<\/em><\/strong> explores the fearless love and passion of two Indigenous women reconnecting with their homelands, ancestors, and stories.<\/p>\n

Created by Kim Senklip Harvey (Syilx, Tsilhqot\u2019in) with the Fire Company (Cris Derksen, Yolanda Bonnell, Daniela Masellis, Lindsay Lachance, Jessica Schacht, Michelle Chabassol, Samantha Brown, Emily Soussana, Madison Henry, Kaitlyn Yott, and Samantha McCue), Kamloopa<\/em><\/strong> is an artistic ceremony that \u201cgive[s] voice and illuminate[s] the power of Indigenous women and femmes\u201d<\/em> (Harvey).<\/p>\n

This reading will be directed by Kim Senklip Harvey (UVic MFA Writing 2021; UVic Law PhD, currently). Feautring: Danica Charlie, Tabatha Hamilton, Taryn Roo Yoneda, and Rahat Saini, with a talkback\u00a0 following the performance.<\/p>\n

Staging Equality<\/em> is a collaborative and creative research project that explores ways in which theatre engages with issues of race, diversity, and inclusion. <\/span><\/p>\n

The project is created and delivered in partnership with faculties and departments from across the University of Victoria alongside local BIPOC artists, students, and community partners. Principle project partners include: Yasmine Kandil (co-lead, UVIC Dept. of Theatre), Sasha Kovacs (co-lead, UVIC Dept. of Theatre), Maureen Bradley (UVIC Dept. of Writing), Sheila\u00a0Rabillard\u00a0(UVIC Dept. of English), Catherine Costigan (UVIC Dept. of Psychology), Monica Prendergast (UVIC Dept. of Education),\u00a0<\/span>waaseyaa\u2019sin\u00a0Christine Sy (UVIC Dept. of Gender Studies),\u00a0<\/span>Carey Newman (UVIC Dept. of Visual Arts),\u00a0\u00a0Krystal Cook, (<\/span>Kwakwaka\u2019wakw\u00a0artist from the\u00a0Namgis\u00a0First Nation of Alert Bay, B.C.), Lina De Guevara (founder of Puente Theatre), Paulina Grainger (Intercultural Association of Greater Victoria), Karla Point (UVIC Faculty of Fine Arts Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator).\u00a0Student researchers involved in the project\u00a0include:\u00a0Drexler Ortiz (Dept. of Psychology), Francis Matheu, Brayden Cook and Louey Sumners (Dept. of Theatre). This project is funded\u00a0<\/span>by the University of Victoria\u2019s Strategic Framework Impact Fund with support from the UVIC Department of Theatre, Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Humanities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
