Spotlight on Shael O'Brien, Costume Designer, Spelling Bee
As part of UVic's Theatre degree program, students explore every aspect of theatre, gradually taking on more senior roles in their learning journey. Shael O'Brien, a fourth-year student focusing on design, is now stepping into the role of costume designer for her first mainstage production. Last year, she worked as an Assistant Costume Designer alongside faculty member Carmen Alatorre on The Importance of Being Earnest and completed an apprenticeship with Vancouver's Bard on the Beach for As You Like It. Having long been involved in musicals as a performer, Shael is excited to be now designing costumes for one.
You might remember Shael from 100 Years of Broadway, where she sang the featured song 'The I Love You Song' from The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Now, she's come full circle, designing costumes for the actor playing that same character in this production!

Glimpse into the Design Process: Before the final costumes hit the stage, designers like Shael collaborate closely with the director to establish a creative vision. After extensive research, the designer creates costume renderings that bring this vision to life. From there, they work alongside our Head of Wardrobe to transform sketches into stunning costumes. Shael recently presented her concepts at the design presentation, and here is a sneak peek of some of the costumes you will see!
