Tartuffe

By Molière

The Phoenix season opens with a biting modern-day take on Molière’s timeless classic comedy. Tartuffe is the quintessential con-man serving up pious hypocrisy to all. When he dupes his patron into willingly handing over his household, the household fights back.

Media Reviews

Tartuffe carries a surprisingly sharp satirical sting after 350 years.”

“…stupendous set…”

– Adrian Chamberlain (Times Colonist)

“It bites deep and hard and leaves a mark.”

“Loads of fun.”

– David Lennam (CBC)

“…great energy and playfulness…”

“… the cast works well together and earns every belly laugh from the gradual unraveling of the plot and the cheeky physicality of it all. If you’re thinking that a classical comedy about religious hypocrisy isn’t your cup of holy water, think again — the speech may be archaic but you’ll be surprised how familiar the humor is in Tartuffe‘s rhetoric.”

– Christine Matte (Monday Magazine)

“Nearly every performance shone, the standout performances too many to list.”

“Nearly every detail of this UVic production was well-considered and everyone was too busy laughing to find fault with it. Even if it’s just to hear Tartuffe rhymed with the American pronunciation of roof, you should check this play out.”

– Justin Schneider (Nexus)
