Why Theatre at UVic?
PLEASE NOTE: The deadline to apply to the UVic Department of Theatre has been extended until March 15.
Our undergraduate degree program is designed to equip students not only for the further study and practices of theatre, but also for the many different career and academic paths open to graduates of a leading liberal arts institution.
The Department of Theatre's unique curriculum is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of all aspects of theatre through both academic study and practical experience. Our students become well-rounded theatre artists, learning and participating in all areas of theatre from a variety of historical and artistic perspectives.
At UVic, we believe that students learn through doing. Each year, the department presents a series of mainstage productions in our Phoenix Theatre season. As part of our curriculum, students are involved on stage and behind the scenes, from designing sets and costumes, to building them, acting on stage, operating the lighting and sound, and supporting administrative, front of house and audience services. These award-winning performances are highly subscribed to by the Victoria community, ensuring our students have the experience of performing for large audiences. Courses in applied theatre integrate student projects into schools and community organizations for real world experiences.

Our program offers the strengths of hands-on training combined with the demands of university-level academic achievement. While intensive, our undergraduate theatre program also encourages a liberal arts education. However, students are required to maintain an overall B average and a B+ average in their theatre courses.
Our department is housed in the Phoenix Building, which – inclusive of its three performance spaces – is considered to be one of the finest teaching and performance facilities in Canada.
