Brief Biography

Prior to joining the Department in 1984, Bert worked as Technical Director and Instructor for the University of Lethbridge, and at Malaspina University-College. In addition to his teaching and management roles at the University of Victoria, he has served as Production Manager of Victoria’s Literary Arts Festival, and is an active member of IATSE Local 168.

Bert has a special interest in the application of computer technology in theatre production. He is the creator of the Theatre Stage Management System (TheaSMS), a program developed to replace the paper-based management system currently used by staff, cast and crew in most theatre productions. He received a Learning and Teaching Development Grant from the University of Victoria to develop the program, which is not only a "paperless" solution to production communications, but an educational device for students wishing to practice in this field. PreSHOW is used for all Phoenix productions and the latest version of the software is in development.
