This course is a hands-on introduction to African drumming and percussion. No prior playing experience is necessary (this course is designed for beginners) and all instruments are provided. Students will come away with strong conceptual understanding of African polyrhythm, and basic playing technique on a variety of traditional instruments. Several of the best-known regional styles will be examined and brought into context through video and audio references. We often have internationally renowned guest artists visit from Africa to share their expertise. This course will foster an appreciation of the ongoing evolution of what is considered “traditional” music, and how the recent worldwide surge in popularity of African musical traditions has affected the course of this evolution.
