Makeup lesson day 2 October

Hello everyone,

I will be teaching make up lessons on Friday 2 October.  I have these times currently available: 1030, 1230 and 130. Please let me know if you would like one of those slots. Thank you.

reminder of important upcoming dates

Just reminding everyone of something which was listed on the course syllabus: all flute students are expected to attend flute related recitals (third yr recitals, graduating recitals as well as faculty flute recitals). These are extremely important to your musical development and understanding of concepts presented in lessons. They are also free and accessible, being usually in the PTY. I will announce recital dates here as I get them. But some upcoming dates you need to reserve in your agenda: Tuesday 29 September faculty trio (flute, viola and piano) recital at 8 pm in PTY; Saturday 24 October at 8 pm (faculty chamber music recital) and Sunday 1 November at 230 pm (a solo faculty recital, with pianist Michelle Mares). IF you have a class on TUesday evening please let me know and I will see what we can do to arrange an excused absence. There is also an optional (but encouraged!) solo flute recital on 19 November at 8 pm (of solo unaccompanied works) in downtown Victoria .

Masterclass plan for first term 2015-16

We will be working on flute choir repertoire and incorporating our study of alto, bass and piccolo into this’ experiential learning’ format. I think we will all enjoy it! I will be distributing parts for our first piece (Mozart Ave Verum Corpus) later this afternoon during my office hours 145-245ish so please do stop by. If you are in class during that time I will post your part on my bulletin board, outside the office door. We will start with this work in our next MC on 30 Sept. And we will be in PTY, so that makes it even more fun! I am hoping we can perform this with our visiting fluters in October (reminder: 14 October we will be hosting the flute and afternoon tea event; class from noon to 220, followed by a tea and pastries reception…please mark your calendars!)

Office Hours today Weds 16 Sept

Hi everyone,

I will be having office hours this afternoon (in my office B075 ) from 145 to 245ish, if you would like to stop in to talk about anything, including scheduling (there are a few of you needing new lesson times as result of ensemble placements). Just drop by!

Order of excerpts

Please play in this order: Beethoven, Brahms, Bach, Tchaikovsky and finally Rossini. Remember you will need your own music, and please remember to fill out a schedule card. and drop it in the envelope which is NOW hanging on the PTY door. Thanks.

Grad lounge on 10 Sept

I will be leaving directly from placement auditions, probably around 6 but possibly later. If you are a first yr and unsure where you are going, please ask one of the fluters. Let’s plan on meeting at Grad Lounge at 630 just to be on the safe side. Could whoever gets there first please get a large table big enough for all of us (12)? Thanks.

Lesson schedule

Hello everyone,

Please select a time from the options listed on the door. Hopefully we will be able to fit everyone fit into those times. Be aware that with small ensemble scheduling it might be necessary to shift things around a bit to accommodate groups…but this is a starting place at least! Good to work with all of you today. We have a really musical group, which is great for me to hear. Exciting stuff! AND new flutes  and head joints too, wow! 🙂

Audition lIst: please read carefully

A couple of important reminders:

  • Everyone needs to fill out their course schedule for me to place students into their small ensembles. Please leave the filled out card in the envelope outside the audition (will be hanging on the PTY recital stage door)
  • Please use your own music for the actual audition. Thank you.
  • See you at noon on Tuesday for our first master class. 🙂
  1. Beethoven Symphony 1 bar 29 to letter A
  2. Brahms Serenade bars 524 to 541 AND 263 to 270
  3. Bach Beginning 8 before B until letter C
  4. Tchaikovsky F to G and beginning 10 after N until letter O
  5. Piccolo: Rossini 39 to 49 AND potentially 217 to 225

First masterclass on 8 Sept Tues 12 to 130

I have heard from almost everyone and can say that 12 to 130 works for more of us than the original time did. I still have to confirm location (will probably still be on PTY)  but this will be determined and posted. See you then. PS  the audition excerpt list is now posted shortly on my door!

10 Sept studio outing decision

HI everyone,

Since 17 Sept will not work (probably) for anyone placed in orchestra, we will have to stay with 10 Sept. And given the later time (probably around 530) we will not be able to go to Murchies (sadly) but we will enjoy the grad lounge instead. They have really good yam fries! Appetizers and drinks are on me!
