Technique tips from Catherine Ransom-Karoly (Associate Principal flutist in LA Philharmonic)

Cathy presented this in a class on technique development at the recent NFA convention in San Diego. Thought I would share this good information with all of you!

FLYING FINGERS: GET YOURS!!!

An overview by Catherine Ransom Karoly

NFA 2016

Never play faster than you can play without tension. To increase speed, shorten the passage, even if it becomes a 3 note exercise which you need to incrementally add on to!!

Correct hand position:

Hold flute on shoulder perpendicular to body

Both hands should approach flute as if grabbing a book off a shelf

Move flute into position: hands will be placed correctly!!

Finger exercises:

Trevor Wye Advanced Practice Book Volume 6 to develop independent fingers

practice back and forth between neighboring tones

advance to bigger intervals

Taffanel-Gaubert (T-G) Exercises 1 and 2

practice all slurred, use metronome to track speed progress

circle lines which are uneven or uncomfortable and use:

‘wood-shedding techniques’

Uneven: long-short, long-short, etc.

Uneven: short-long, short-long. Sustain tone through this exercise!!

Moveable fermata: Place fermata on first note of every four. Sustain!! Then move fermata to next note of every four, etc. Repeat segments which are uneven or uncomfortable!!

Scales: T-G Exercise 4:

Utilize same wood-shedding technique. If necessary, practice one measure at a time. Practice moveable fermata in groups of 4, 8, and 16. Introduce mixed articulations to promote evenness. Track progress with metronome!

T-G Exercise 7:

Start by playing all slurred. Make sure 1st finger is always lifted for D#/E-flat! Add mixed articulations and increase speed. Also introduce 8va.

At this point, it is useful to add Moyse Daily Exercises to practice.

Full range scales, 3rds, and 6ths:

Begin by learning 2 octave scales from memory, beginning and ending on tonic. Extend the range by beginning on tonic, looping ‘over the top’ to high C-sharp or D, descending 3 octaves to low C or C-sharp, and returning to tonic. Repeat the same procedure with 3rds and 6th, including inverted 3rds and 6ths! Spend extra time just on ‘turn-arounds’.

Arpeggios: T-G # 8-16

Other useful method books: Moyse Studies and Technical Exercises, Geoffrey Giilbert Technical Flexibility

Etudes: Berbiguer, Andersen op. 33, 30, 63, 60, 15 (progressively more difficult), De Lorenzo Flute Studies, just to name a few!!! Pay attention not only to even fingers, but good quality of sound throughout!!

Trouble-shooting: Target notes, looking ahead, mentally aware practice: Examples: Firebird, Peter and the Wolf, Classical Symphony

Assorted Competitions and Masterclasses news

Hello everyone,

Just returned from the NFA convention in San Diego. Just letting you all know that there is a wealth of new info posted on the bulletin board outside my office: classes, seminars, competitions, you name it, happening all over the world. Check it out! Feel free to take things down to have a better look at them (there are so many I had to rather “creatively” post all of the flyers, you will see what I mean!); just be sure to re-post them after you are done looking through them.

Enjoy and see you all in January!

Technique exam details (to be held in January 2017)

Hello everyone,

Developing technique is extremely important for all aspiring musicians. For this reason there will be a technique exam administered in Jan to all first yr through third year undergrads (fourth years and grads are exempt this year).  This will take place during a portion of your last lesson in January 2017. The exam will be marked on a pass/re-test basis. In the event that a student does not pass, s/he will be re-tested in late Feb. However, my goal (and my hope) is for all students to pass with flying colours on their first try! The content of the test will be the same (except for a faster speed requirement) as the current RCM grade 10 technical exam. Please see

https://examinations.rcmusic.ca/sites/default/files/files/S32_Flute%20Syllabus_2013%20online_final_SECURED.pdf

Required speeds will be 104 instead of 92. It will be important to get started on developing these skills early. Meeting this goal will be a smooth, stress-free process if you practice patiently and steadily over the course of the first term and winter break. Happy practising! SInce I am on leave until January,  please consult with the interim flute teacher early in first term if you have any questions about this exam.

Summer flute classes in Slocan BC

Just a note letting you know there are still spots available for Valhalla Summer School of Music in August (flute with Lauren Eselson) ! We are hoping to run two flute core groups this summer; an advanced group of Univ. Music majors , advanced high school students and adults; and an intermediate group of less experienced players. Register and all info at: www.valhallafinearts.org

It is helpful for us to have all applications in by June 1, though there is no official application deadline. Housing does fill up quickly in the area, so early application is advisable.

The morning core class will be a three hour workshop of breathing, tone, technique, ensemble, and masterclass. Afternoons are devoted to optional chamber music with strings and piano, private lessons, and collaborative piano sessions with the wonderful Susanne Ruberg-Gordon.

This is a great way to get ready for auditions and the upcoming school year! And all in the beautiful setting of the Slocan Lake, B.C….
