UVic Music e-Pulse                                        December 2019

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1 | 2:30 PM
UVic Orchestra: Fantasia
Anna Betuzzi, oboe
(2019 UVic Concerto Competition winner)
Ajtony Csaba, conductor

The UVic Orchestra presents Fantasia, featuring an oboe concerto, comic strip projections, new music, and a symphony.

Canada’s earliest opera overture for orchestra, Joseph Quesnel’s delightful Colas et Colinette, will open the concert followed by a musical territory acknowledgment—in dialogue with the orchestra—delivered by indigenous artist Lindsay Delaronde. The orchestra will perform druck // durch, by School of Music alumnus Nolan Krell. Inspired by French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, this composition is a musical essay on the discourse between our inner world and the outer one. The first half of the concert will come to a climax with the breathtaking solo in Richard Strauss’s Oboe Concerto, performed by UVic Concerto Competition winner Anna Betuzzi. Currently in the final year of her Bachelor of Music degree in performance, Betuzzi studies oboe with Russell Bajer.

The second half of the concert features comic strip projections from the project entitled Between, created by UVic Writing student Petranella Daviel. Live music by Paul Pratt—arranged by students in Csaba’s orchestration class—will accompany the illustrations. The concert will conclude with Shostakovich’s acrobatic and exhilarating Symphony No 9.
