Song of the Earth: A Week with Gustav Mahler

The School of Music pays tribute to the celebrated late-Romantic Austrian composer, Gustav Mahler, in a week of special lectures, rehearsals, listening sessions and performances.

The highlight of A Week with Mahler features UVic faculty, alumni and guests in what promises to be an unforgettable performance of the Schoenberg/Riehn chamber arrangement of Mahler's masterpiece, Das Lied von der Erde.

Throughout the week, the School of Music is hosting a Listening Room of Mahler’s recordings and concerts, including several from the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall.

Broadcasts take place in Rm. B037, MacLaurin Building, B-Wing and all are welcome to attend.

Tuesday, January 7, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Mahler's Symphony No. 1, which he began to compose at age 24, was a challenge for audiences of the time and already demonstrated his symphonic palette. Performance is by the Berlin Philharmonic with Simon Rattle, conductor. Introductory remarks by Rattle. 

Tuesday, January 7, 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Mahler's most Classical work, his Symphony No. 4, movements 1 and 4, performed by the Berlin Philharmonic.
Note: The first movement will be read by the UVic Orchestra at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 9 in the Farquhar Auditorium.
