The 2024 SALT New Music Festival’s opening night features the premiere of David A. Jaffe’s large-scale commissioned composition, Northwest Passages: Thirteen Climate Alarms from the Arctic.
Northwest Passages: Thirteen Climate Alarms from the Arctic, a mesmerizing musical soundscape, reflects the grandeur and fragility of our ecosystem. Composed as a continuous work, its distinct sections highlight thirteen specific climate concerns, and the thirteen distinct viola parts evoke the region’s vast landscapes and the need for personal responsibility in responding to them. The composer writes: “The unique timbre of thirteen distinct viola parts enables massive textures suggesting the vastness of the landscape, as well as glacial layering, sliding, splitting, melting and deformation.”
ABOUT SALT
SALT is produced by Tsilumos, a new music ensemble based in Victoria. Formed in 2011, the Tsilumos Ensemble performs chamber music ranging from duos to large instrumental combinations. Its main objective is to give new and little-known Canadian and international works an optimal performance, regardless of technical and intellectual demands or compositional style. Since its inception the ensemble has brought high quality, challenging new music to the larger community of British Columbia and in 2011 created the SALT Festival for New Music
Entrance is free, but RSVP is required. Donations will be gratefully accepted.
