Pianist Minsoo Sohn: Bach’s Goldberg Variations

Monday, October 7 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund presents
Minsoo Sohn, piano
Bach’s Goldberg Variations

Join us for this rare opportunity to experience one of the most iconic works of the Baroque period in the hands of a master interpreter. Minsoo Sohn, celebrated for his deep musical insight and technical brilliance, has captivated audiences worldwide with his interpretations of Bach. His performance of the Goldberg Variations, a work that demands both intellectual rigor and emotional sensitivity, will be a highlight of our concert season. Sohn’s 2011 Honens-label recording of the Goldberg Variations has been described as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation,” (New York Times)

Originally composed for the harpsichord, the Goldberg Variations consists of an aria followed by 30 variations. It is widely regarded as one of Bach’s most complex and profound compositions, exploring a wide range of emotions and musical ideas. Sohn’s interpretation promises to reveal the work’s intricate architecture while also conveying its deep spiritual and emotional dimensions.

ABOUT MINSOO SOHN
Minsoo Sohn is a Korean-American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity — qualities that have earned him acclaim throughout the United States, Canada and Korea. His readings of the works of Bach and Beethoven in particular have placed him among the elect in this repertoire, and the inspired ingenuity of his performances of orchestral repertoire have earned him many accolades.

Sohn owes much of his success to his mentors, Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, with whom he studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston. After teaching at Michigan State University, Sohn returned to South Korea where he instantly became a much sought after performer and pedagogue, as he joined the faculty at Korean National University of Arts. He has also served on the jury at prominent international piano competitions including Honens, Top of the World and Busoni Competition.

With a generous gift from the estate of Martha Cooke, we are thrilled to bring you three annual concerts with Minsoo Sohn. The donation also earmarks two substantial funds for piano maintenance at the School of Music. Proceeds from this concert will contribute to this legacy fund benefitting our pianos.
