Dr. Jane Ginsborg, Musician & Psychologist

In this lecture, Dr. Jane Ginsgorg will outline what is meant by deliberate practice, describe how effective practice strategies have been identified through research, explore the factors underlying effective practice (self-regulated learning, self-efficacy and motivation) and provide a brief introduction to memorizing.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

A musician as well as a psychologist, Professor Jane Ginsborg has held the position of Associate Director of Research at the Royal Northern College of Music (Manchester UK) since 2009 and fulfils the roles of Programme Leader for Research Degrees and Director of the Centre for Music Performance Research. Between 2012 and 2015 she served as President of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM). Jane studied music at the University of York and studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Following a successful career as a singer, she graduated in psychology from the Open University, and undertook her doctoral research at Keele University. Her research interests in music include the development of musical expertise, mental health, music making during the COVID-19 pandemic, and strategies for practising, learning, memorizing and performing.
