Minsoo Sohn: Liszt’s Transcendental Études

Friday, March 29 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund presents
Minsoo Sohn, piano

Internationally acclaimed pianist Minsoo Sohn returns to the UVic School of Music for a captivating performance of Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Études as well as the six Consolations, S.172.

Sohn, hailed as a virtuoso of the highest order, brings his piano mastery and profound artistry to Liszt’s masterpiece. Known for his magnetic stage presence and ability to infuse each note with emotion, Sohn will navigate the intricate landscapes of Liszt’s compositions with finesse and passion.

Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Études — a collection of twelve challenging and evocative pieces — are a pinnacle of piano literature, challenging even the most skilled pianists with their technical demands while offering a profound emotional journey for both performer and audience. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Minsoo Sohn’s transcendent interpretation. From the thunderous cascades of sound to delicate, intimate passages, this promises to be an evening that will linger in your memory long after the final notes fade away.

Sohn’s concert at the School of Music sold out this past October. Get your tickets now!

ABOUT MINSOO SOHN
Minsoo Sohn is a Korean-American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity — qualities that have earned him acclaim throughout the United States, Canada and Korea. His readings of the works of Bach and Beethoven in particular have placed him among the elect in this repertoire, and the inspired ingenuity of his performances of orchestral repertoire have earned him many accolades.

Sohn owes much of his success to his mentors, Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun, with whom he studied at the New England Conservatory in Boston. After teaching at Michigan State University, Sohn returned to South Korea where he instantly became a much sought after performer and pedagogue, as he joined the faculty at Korean National University of Arts. He has also served on the jury at prominent international piano competitions including Honens, Top of the World and Busoni Competition.

The Martha Cooke Legacy Fund

With a generous gift from the estate of Martha Cooke, The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund has made possible Minsoo Sohn’s visits to the University of Victoria School of Music for concerts and masterclasses over a 3 year term. We are delighted that Minsoo Sohn will return to present concerts and masterclasses in October of 2024 and 2025.  The Martha Cooke bequest also established two substantial funds for piano maintenance at the School of Music. All ticket proceeds from Mr. Sohn’s concerts will go to the piano maintenance legacy fund.
