Hopeful Monster: Album launch concert with Eve Egoyan and Mauricio Pauly

October 29, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

UVic Alumni Concert
Eve Egoyan (BMus ’85), acoustic and augmented piano

Mauricio Pauly, chromaharp, lapsteel, percussion, live sampling and processing

Embark on an auditory journey of reimagined music and sound.

“Hopeful Monster” is a fresh venture by Eve Egoyan and Mauricio Pauly — a recording and performance project that breathes new life into the piano’s sonic and expressive capabilities. The duo spent four days in the early summer of 2022 recording in the Wong Theatre at Simon Fraser University in downtown Vancouver. This concert in Victoria is the first of their “Hopeful Monster” album launch tour.

Eve will perform on grand piano augmented with electronics while Mauricio’s sounds come from live sampling and electronic processing while playing a variety of percussion instruments, lapsteel and chromaharp (a type of zither). When Mauricio’s instruments respond to Eve’s piano artistry, the two artist-creators delve into the realm between impromptu performance and imaginative design.

Eve and Mauricio continually surprise each other, ultimately giving birth to a music that can only manifest when they collaborate. Their approach is fundamentally rooted in unity and immediacy, redefining the dynamic interplay of improvisation and composition. Much like the collaborative process known in dance and theater as ‘devising,’ Eve and Mauricio crafted this work through hands-on experimentation in a shared creative space, rather than mere speculation.
