Note:
Though the daily structures of our lives seem to always be changing, thank you all for tuning in
this afternoon! Despite much rescheduling, it is a true honour to still have a chance to present with and
for the people I love. Attending music school has been one of the highlights of my life, and I cherish the
time and lessons many of us shared together. Keep on smilin’

PROGRAM NOTES (Selected works)
Spacey III: Final - Sonia Ng
The idea behind SPACEY III is to utilize both electronic and acoustic sounds in order to create contrasting
ambience and changing melodies. Starting as a lively duet between piano and glockenspiel, the second half
of the piece introduces electronic elements along with a change of atmosphere before finally returning
back to form. The piece contains several changing elements, creating an unpredictable direction of where
the piece is heading. SPACEY III is a blend of experimental noise and classical harmonies.
Blue Garden - Evan Wright
Blue Garden is piece based on minimalism, inspired by the likes of Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Henryk
Mikołaj Górecki. Blue Garden is supposed to feel like an experience, like walking through a garden of your
own emotions.
Over-Easy - Tobo Vergara Ulloa
This piece was written to embody the feeling of an early morning breakfast with the people you love.
As the composition develops the voices of the instruments begin to intertwine, symbolizing the chatter
around a breakfast table.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging - Chris Stewart
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a piece inspired by an MRI scan that Chris underwent in the beginning of
2022. The piece aims to not only capture the sounds that MRI machines produce, but also the emotions
that he felt while inside the machine. It is music of both curiosity and wonder, but also claustrophobia and
anxiety. He hopes you enjoy.

<text>Join the UVic Music Student Association (MSA) for a transformative afternoon that amplifies voices often unheard in the world of music. In this annual recital, talented students from the School of Music will perform and also share personal insights about compositions by marginalized artists. This event shines a spotlight on the rich diversity in music, while addressing important challenges of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the musical landscape. Celebrate the power of music to bring awareness, spark dialogue, and inspire change in both the art form and the institutions that shape it.

This event is part of UVic’s annual Five Days of Action: 365 Days of Commitment, taking place from November 4-8, 2024. 5 Days of Action is a free, week-long event aimed at amplifying the work groups, units, and organizations (on- and off-campus) are doing to create a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable campus and community throughout the year.</text>

BIOGRAPHIES
Canada’s premiere coloratura soprano Tracy Dahl has appeared throughout her career with
such opera houses as Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), the Metropolitan
Opera (NY), San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Canadian Opera
Company, Calgary Opera and her native Manitoba Opera. She is frequently heard in concert
with leading orchestras at home and around the world and also enjoys the more intimate
setting of art song recitals. Frequent and favourite roles are Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor, Marie
in the Daughter of the Regiment, Cunegonde in Candide, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Norina in Don
Pasquale and Madame Mao in Nixon in China, the last of these roles having been recorded on
the Naxos label. In 2017, she was awarded the Order of Canada for her performing career and
for her work mentoring as a teacher to the next generation of singers.
Dutch-Canadian soprano, Monica Huisman has delighted audiences from Amsterdam’s
Concertgebouw to Guatemala City and has soared on the stages of Vancouver Opera,
Calgary Opera, Edmonton Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, The Netherlands Opera, Manitoba
Opera, Opera Ontario and Saskatoon Opera in productions of Carmen, Marriage of Figaro,
Cosi Fan Tutte, Falstaff, Don Giovanni, Cunning Little Vixen, La Bohème, Magic Flute, Hansel und
Gretel and Lakmé. Equally at home in concert repertoire Ms. Huisman has thrilled audiences
with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Winnipeg
Symphony Orchestra, Saskatoon Symphony, among others. Most recently, she returned to the
Vancouver Symphony for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Bramwell Tovey—as well as with
the Regina Symphony—and Messiah with the WSO. She is currently on the vocal faculty at the
University of Manitoba’s Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music.
Korean-American cellist Minna Rose Chung is Associate Professor at the University of
Manitoba- Desautels Faculty of Music and performs internationally as recitalist and cellist of the
Desautels Piano Trio. In 2014 Dr. Chung was awarded the University of Manitoba’s Rh Award
for Outstanding Contributions to Scholarship and Research in the Creative Works. For the past
four years Dr. Chung has been immersed in co-authoring a critical pedagogy method book
entitled CelloMind published through Ovation Press, Chicago. Skilled in both orchestral and
chamber repertoire, Minna regularly performs as a member of the Munich Symphony Orchestra
and is a core member of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Minna Rose is also a returning
guest artist, teacher, and chamber musician to several international music festivals, including the
historic Meadowmount School of Music in New York. Dr. Chung earned her Bachelor of Music
in Cello Performance at Oberlin Conservatory, Masters of Music at Northwestern University,
and Doctor of Musical Arts at SUNY Stony Brook University.
Winnipeg collaborative pianist Laura Loewen has appeared in concerts throughout North
America and in Europe, Asia and South America. She is a professor of Collaborative Piano and
the Vocal Coach at the University of Manitoba’s Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music and is on
the faculties of the NUOVA opera training program in Edmonton, Alberta and VISI. Dr. Loewen
has performed extensively with singers, instrumentalists and chamber ensembles and has
appeared in concert with artists such as Charles Castleman, Wendy Nielsen, Kimberly Barber,
Jasper Wood, Eugene Rousseau, and William Bennett. Loewen and duo partner, saxophonist
Allen Harrington, have been performing together for the last seven years throughout North
America and in Europe, Asia, and South America. Ms. Loewen holds a Doctorate of Musical
Arts degree in Accompanying/Coaching from the University of Minnesota and spent two
summers at the Music Academy of the West studying vocal accompanying with Warren Jones,
and worked with Martin Katz and Graham Johnson at SongFest ’98.
