PROGRAM NOTES
Suite for Brass Quintet is the second of a four movement work exploring the synthesis of traditional brass quintet and jazz big band styles
and form.
– Brendan Wong
Foundations & Surroundings is an expression of the viola’s range and gradual search for a melody, utilizing a harmonic foundation and
special effects.
– Leif Bradshaw
Inspired by Leigh Bardugo’s book Six of Crows, East Stave Streets means to capture the feel of a grim, bustling trade city; rain on winding
cobblestone streets, misty canals and harbours.
– Naomi Sehn
suffer is a piece in one movement composed of repeated chords.

– Craig Matterson

I whether Me focuses on the concept of becoming whole as an individual, through weeding out the unwanted ideas and learned
behaviour with a meditation-like process.
– Deniz Pezmecki

Holiday Cellobration play-along
The Victoria community of Play-Along Cellists

GREETINGS FROM PAMELA HIGHBAUGH ALONI
I am happy that you have joined us tonight for this wonderful celebration of our cello
community. I hope it has brought you some joy and cheer.
Many thanks go to all my colleagues, students and the performers you have heard
tonight as well as those who have helped behind the scenes. Thank you for your
teaching and for engaging in this event and mission to bring the cellists of Greater
Victoria together.
I also extend my warm and hearty thanks to Frances Litman, Jon O’Riordan and
composer Hollas Longton whose collaboration through The Gail O’Riordan Climate
and Arts Fund and Creatively United has brought us a special piece as part of our
Holiday Cellobration and has supported scholarships for our UVic cello students.
I want to express special thanks as well to Ray and Marilyn Jones, whose recent
generous donation of a fine Neapolitan Cello is currently being played by Sandra
Espinola.
Many thanks to Sheila Redhead and the GVYO for providing rehearsal space for the
GVYO Cello Ensemble.
Continued thanks and gratitude go to the UVic School of Music and our intrepid
Concert Manager Kristy Farkas whose poster design and overall concert arranging
allows us to share in such wonderful community events.
With Best wishes to you all for peaceful holiday season full of light and love.
About the composer:
Violinist and composer Hollas Longton, a Victoria native, has been steeped in
contemporary music since childhood. His father, composer Michael Longton, alongside
celebrated Czech-Canadian composer and pedagogue Rudolf Komorous, played a
vital role in establishing UVic’s uniquely exploratory academic culture. The younger
Longton’s decision to become a composer and study at the University of Victoria
grew tangentially from his interest in abstract painting—“Almost against the urgings
of my father,” he laughs. Following his graduation at UVic, he pursued a master’s at
the Royal Conservatory of the Hague. He’s now completing his Ph.D at University
College Cork, while residing in Victoria.
Since 2012, Hollas has been preoccupied with timbre and the concept of space—
both in terms of considering the where of the music, and of cultivating a particular
space to be inhabited by performers and listeners.
About the Poet:
Frances Litman is a Victoria, BC based, award-winning multi-media professional and
founder of the free community solutions event, resource and climate action hub,
CreativelyUnited.org, a Climate and the Arts partner. Frances’ love of the outdoors
and concern about environmental degradation and climate change has set her on a
path to create healthier, happier communities rooted in regenerative decision making.
