As it celebrates its twenty-sixth anniversary this season, the LSQ continues to flourish with its original personnel: violinists Ann Elliott-Goldschmid and Sharon Stanis, violist Joanna Hood, and cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni. Such longevity is unprecedented for an all-female quartet—indeed, is rare anywhere in classical music—and is particularly impressive considering that the group’s multifarious activities and international reputation have only expanded with time. The LSQ remained in Detroit for five years, where its members taught at the Center for Creative Studies/Institute of Music and Dance and at nearby Oakland University. Meanwhile, the LSQ itself received coaching from two of the world’s most esteemed quartets—the Amadeus and the Alban Berg—and from the violinist Rostislav Dubinsky, of the legendary Borodin Quartet, who served as the women’s “musical father” until his death in 1997. The LSQ’s extraordinary musicianship was recognized early on. Already in 1988, it was ranked among Musical America’s “Young Artists to Watch,” and shortly after it won top prizes at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and the Portsmouth International String Quartet Competition. As winners of the 1988 Cleveland String Quartet Competition, the LSQ had the opportunity to work closely with the Cleveland Quartet for two years at the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, New York. In 1991, the four women became artists-in-residence at the University of Victoria’s School of Music, where they have built one of the finest string programs in the country. They hold honorary doctorates from University Canada West and were honored with the inaugural Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Artistic Expression from the University of Victoria in 2010. The LSQ has made a significant impact on the city of Victoria, through their music, serving as section leaders of the Galiano Ensemble, and outreach activities, including advocating for string education in Victoria’s public schools and administering the annual Lafayette Health Awareness Forum, founded in 2006. The LSQ performs across Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe, its concerts often allied with masterclasses. Performing regularly with their esteemed colleagues at the University of Victoria, the quartet has also collaborated with such distinguished colleagues as bassist Gary Karr, clarinetist James Campbell, and pianists including Luba Edlina, Jane Coop, Robert Silverman, and Ronald Turini, as well as with other quartets—the Alcan, New Zealand, Penderecki, and Quarteto Latinoamericano. The four women also maintain separate careers as solo and chamber-music performers, teachers, and adjudicators. �The LSQ carries a large, wide-ranging repertoire, including canonical works but also some offbeat corners of the string-quartet literature, and it has commissioned quartets from (and collaborated closely with) composers including Murray Adaskin, John Burke, Justin Haynes, R. Murray Schafer, and Eugene Weigel. Two upcoming commissions for the LSQ include a new string quartet by David A. Jaffe and a piano quintet by Kelly-Marie Murphy (with pianist Alexander Tselyakov). It has a particular affinity for the quartets of Beethoven, which it has performed as a six-concert cycle in Victoria, Waterloo and Winnipeg. The LSQ has released CDs on the Dorian, Centrediscs, and other labels (including its own). Its discography includes major quartets by Borodin, Debussy, Grieg, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky; Dvořák’s piano quintets (with Antonin Kubalek); and four CDs of music by Adaskin, for his AdLar label. Its CBC Records disc Death and the Maiden, featuring music by Schubert, Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, and Rebecca Clarke, won the Western Canadian Music Award for Outstanding Classical Recording. It recorded Michael Longton’s Almost Nothing Like Purple Haze for the CD Jimi Hendrix Uncovered. The LSQ is the subject of David Rounds’ book The Four and the One: In Praise of String Quartets, published in 1999. Yariv Aloni Yariv Aloni is acclaimed by critics for his “impeccable technical accomplishments, exquisite phrasing and superb viola playing”, and as having “a huge, singing tone and a rare depth and nobility of feeling”. He was a finalist at the François Shapira competition in Tel-Aviv. His awards included the Israel Broadcasting Authority award for chamber music performance and numerous awards and annual scholarships from the AmericanIsrael Cultural foundation which led to an initiation to play with Isaac Stern and Pinchas Zuckerman at Carnegie Hall in New York. A former violist of the Penderecki string quartet in Canada and the Aviv Piano Quartet in Israel, he has performed in concert halls around the world including Lincoln Centre in New York, the Louvre in Paris, Tonhalle in Zurich, and numerous concert halls in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Mr. Aloni recorded for the United, Marquise, Tritonus, and CBC labels as well as independent CD labels. He appears regularly with the Vetta Ensemble in Vancouver and performs in numerous chamber music festivals and recitals series. Born on A kibbutz in Israel, He turned from violin to the viola when he was in his teens. He studied viola with David Chen at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem, Daniel Benyamini, principal violist of the Israel Philharmonic, and Michael Tree of the Guarneri Quartet. With an emphasis on chamber music he also studied at the Jerusalem Music Centre with distinguished visiting faculty from around the world including the Isaac Stern, the Amadeus and the Guarneri String Quartets, and many others. Much in demand as a conductor he is currently the music director of three orchestras; the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria, the Victoria Chamber Orchestra and the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, and his guest appearances include the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, the West Coast Symphony in Vancouver and the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. �Alexander Tselyakov Recognized as one of Canada’s most outstanding musicians, Tselyakov has been described as all “representing the best aspect of Russian pianism and its attributes... effectively synthesized the emotional balance of Arthur Rubenstein and the more highly strung febrile quality of Horowitz” (New York Concert Review). Tselyakov studied with Lev Naumov (custodian of the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus methods that are credited with producing many extraordinary twentieth century Russian keyboard masters such as Gilels and Richter) at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. He has won major prizes at the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the International Music Competition of Japan in Tokyo, the New Orleans International Competition in USA. Tselyakov has distinguished himself as guest soloist with some of the world’s most renowned orchestras such as the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Moscow Philharmonic. He has appeared with the Tokyo Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra Symphonique de Québec, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Virginia Symphony, the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra to name a few. Tselyakov has appeared as a recitalist at major concerts halls around the world such as the Carnegie Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Shostakovich Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, the Great Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory, the Regentenbau Hall in Bad Kissingen (Germany), the Concert & Congress Centre de Doelen in Rotterdam (Netherlands) and many others. A busy concert pianist, teacher and chamber musician, Tselyakov collaborates with many leading Canadian and International musicians. His knowledge of the repertoire and exquisite sense of program balance make him a valuable artistic director of two Chamber Music Festivals; at Clear Lake in Manitoba and Pender Harbour in BC. The works on this program reflect the various directions in which joy may be tainted. Tonight we pit the material pleasures of a great Casanova and the gleefully rebellious sounds of Ravel’s piano writing against the purifying joy only felt by Strauss’ protagonist after enduring a struggle with death. Through this comparison we find a duality of physical, naïve joy versus spiritual pessimism—that the most fulfilling joy cannot be found in this life. With this in mind it becomes clear that we must remember to consider the profound while not hesitating to enjoy the profane. Overture to Don Giovanni (1787) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 27 Jan 1756 – 5 Dec 1791 Mozart is known for his compositional process, driven by impulses seemingly inspired by otherworldly creative muses. The overture to Don Giovanni is no exception: legend has it that the piece was composed the night before the premiere of the opera—or the morning of, depending on who tells the story. Given the opera’s subject matter, it fits in with the composer’s preference for tales of material pleasures and dealings. The overture to this seminal tale of philandery and retribution outlines the two choices before its rakish title character: retribution or reconciliation. Scalar themes in the winds outline the steps he might take to heaven or hell, and the ever changing tonal quality reflects this duality. Yet for all this, it is almost a comedic work. Like Le nozze di Figaro, the success of which it followed, Don Giovanni concerns itself with baser topics than contemporary opera-goers were accustomed to. Its plot follows the escapades of a happygo-lucky aristocrat while his peers try haplessly to rein him in until finally an animated statue delivers Giovanni his just deserts. This playfulness is reflected in the overture’s energetic character, which can be taken as a musical portrait of the seducer. �Death and Transfiguration (1889) Richard Strauss, 11 June 1864 – 8 Sept 1949 In contrast to the earthly joy of our other works, Strauss’ Tod und Verklärung is profoundly pessimistic. This tone poem depicts the deathbed visions of an ailing being, culminating in a shimmering transfiguration of the spirit. This music was considered quite modern at the time of its composition, with its extravagant harmonies, occasionally jagged rhythms, and brusque energy. As with Strauss’ other tone poems though, Death and Transfiguration was well received. Unlike Strauss’ previous tone poems, the present work has no direct literary inspiration; however, elucidatory poetry by Alexander Ritter accompanies the published score. The dying man reminisces of tranquil childhood, Ritter’s text tells us, but waking, he finds himself in a struggle with death. His drive to live stalls the inevitable, but the battle exhausts him and he falls into a tense silence. With images of his life playing out before him, the subject recognises that his last honourable challenge is before him. Death’s hammer falls but crushes only the body, as the spirit is transformed. Piano Concerto in G Major (1932) Maurice Ravel, 7 March 1875 – 28 Dec 1937 Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major continues in the concern with dialogue found in his post-war pastiche-like works. Elements of jazz and classical music (the work is inspired by Mozart and Saint-Saëns) are the most prominent features of the first movement, but aspects of the music of Basque and Spain are also present. These flashbacks from Ravel’s youth give the work a worldly, metropolitan quality. This dialectical synthesis is reflected in the bitonal portions of the work, which simultaneously present contrasting key centres. While these features would seem to resonate with postmodern values, the Concerto was delivered in the aesthetic mode of late romanticism. For that reason, Ravel’s work was not well received by his colleagues such as Darius Milhaud and Francis Poulenc, who preferred classical clarity and simplicity. However, the Concerto was well received by European audiences. The work was composed over three years with the intention of being a vehicle to showcase Ravel’s own skills at the keyboard. However, his declining health made it impossible for him to perform, and well-known pianist Marguerite Long, to whom the piece is dedicated, gave the premiere with the composer at the podium. Despite the technical challenges of the first movement, Long described the listless, slow melody that begins the second as even more difficult. “That flowing phrase,” Ravel reportedly replied, “How I worked over it bar by bar! It nearly killed me!” �b i o g ra p h i e s Barry Tan Barry Tan began his piano studies at the age of five, and is in his final year at the University of Victoria, studying under Professor May Ling Kwok. Barry has been awarded the University of Victoria President’s Scholarship, Fine Arts Achievement Award, the Johann Strauss Study & Travel Scholarship, and more. He was the 2013 winner of the Mary Adamson Young Artist Piano Competition, the Madeline Till Competition, as well as the University of Victoria Concerto Competition. He has won numerous awards from the Greater Victoria Festival, including the Dr. Robin Wood Memorial Cup, the Concerto Plaque, and the Victoria Silver Medallion Tray. Barry has also won top prize at the Coquitlam BCRMTA (Teachers Association) Festival, for most outstanding performer. He has competed at the BC Performing Arts Competition National Class in 2011 and 2013, as well as the BC Young Artists Provincial Piano Competition in 2012. For the 2013 season, Barry was the Orchestral Pianist with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, and he is currently the Rehearsal Pianist for the University Chamber Singers. Winner of the 2013 Johann Strauss Scholarship Competition, Barry attended summer studies at the Mozarteum Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria and studied with Professor Andrzej Jasiński. Ajtony Csaba Ajtony Csaba, born in Cluj, Romania, began his studies on the cello and later piano and composition in Budapest at the Academy of Music. He began studying conducting in Vienna and Budapest simultaneously with Tamás Gál, András Ligeti, Uroš Lajovic, Peter Eötvös, Istvan Dénes and Zoltán Pesko. He was awarded many prizes as a conductor and composer, and was a semi-finalist in the first competition for opera in Cluj, Romania. He has had numerous concerts in Hungary and Austria with orchestras including UMZE, Sinfonietta Baden, Webern Sinfonietta, Savaria Symphonic Orchestra, and Danube Symphonic Orchestra. In the 2003/04 season he was the assistant conductor and tutor of the Academy Orchestra Budapest and in 2005 was invited to be the assistant conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra with their contemporary program. He made his conducting debut in the Viennese Musikverein with the RSO (Radio-Symphonieorchester, Wien) in 2007. Since 2006 he has served as the chief conductor of the Central European Chamber Orchestra, and led the orchestra on a tour in China (performances including halls in Shenzhen, Lanzhou and in the Parliament in Beijing), with return engagements in 2007 and 2009. Ajtony Csaba has been the leader of the Vienna Jeunesse Choir since 2007. In 2008 he conducted at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music and was assistant to Peter Eötvös at the Salzburg Festspiele. In 2008 he conducted the EuroMed Youth Orchestra in Damaskus, Syria. Since leaving the symphony he has maintained an active schedule as a conductor, soloist, clinician and chamber musician. His recording The English Tuba on the Fanfare/Pro Arte label was nominated for a Juno Award and received a number of favourable reviews and worldwide radio play. Under Dowling’s direction, the Victoria Tuba Christmas Ensemble has raised thousands of dollars for local charities and has been featured in such diverse venues as CBC TV’s The Journal and with the Victoria Symphony Christmas Pops program. Eugene Dowling is a Yamaha Artist. Lieutenant (N) Matthew Clark, CD Commanding Officer / Director of Music Since assuming command of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in October 2011, Lieutenant navy Matthew Clark’s artistic vision, coupled with his passion for symphonic wind music and deep regard for military music tradition, has inspired a number of recording projects and innovative collaborations with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir, the University of Victoria’s music and theatre departments, and the Victoria Symphony. Lt (N) Clark and the Naden Band recently commissioned and performed a new work from Ian MacDougall and will continue to encourage new Canadian music in the future. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Lt(N) Clark studied conducting and wind ensemble repertoire extensively with Dr. Gillian MacKay. He has also worked with notable wind ensemble specialists Eugene Corporon, Jack Stamp, and Craig Kirchhoff. An equally gifted euphonium soloist, Lt(N) Clark’s 2007 solo recording for the Arktos Label, entitled EUPHONIUM, has been featured on CBC Radio and in the British Bandsman, the longest-running international publication of brass bands. �PO2 Robyn Jutras Bassoon Soloist PO2 Robyn Jutras joined the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in the spring of 2010, and was happy to be posted home to the west coast. Originally from Vancouver, Robyn studied at the University of Victoria where she completed her Bachelor of Music in 2004 before moving to New York to earn a Master of Music from the Juilliard School in 2007. Other musical highlights included a tour of southern Germany with Festivalensemble Stuttgart, a woodwind quintet tour in Korea, performance of a double quintet with the New York Wind Quintet and summer sessions at Domaine Forget in Quebec as well as at the Banff Centre. Currently PO2 Jutras plays in several ensembles within the Naden Band, including the concert band, stage band, sax quartet, and woodwind quintet, which is preparing for an upcoming concert at UBC. She also composes and arranges music for the band, and occasionally plays contrabassoon with the Victoria Symphony. When she’s not busy bassooning, you might find her out hiking up or biking down a mountain, playing floor hockey, or enjoying one of Victoria’s many excellent restaurants. Title A name given to the resource Wind Symphony Description An account of the resource UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.
