This work is inspired by the people and land of W̱SÁNEĆ (Saanich), which means emerging people/land. VII – The prerecorded sounds are digitally stretched vibrating strings of a clean sounding electric guitar. The compositional material is taken from the distinct scordatura (alternate tuning) of the seven string instruments in the following work Sointula. The shapes in the video are abstract representations of the unique scordatura superimposed on the standard tuning of the violin family of instruments. Sointula – Theoretically, it explores techniques such as natural harmonics, rhythmic symmetry, elaborate tuning, the relationship between the harmonic series and twelve-tone equal temperament, shapes represented as sound (“soundshapes”), timbre acting as harmony acting as rhythm, musical extrapolation, the process and result of layered composition, metric modulation. Poetically, it portrays themes such as unification, persistence, open landscapes, melody, location and relocation, opposition, reassurance, water, abstract structures and ideas, the life-affirming experience of attentively listening to natural sounds. Having spent a number of years in Denmark and Italy, she went on to study at the “Hochschule für Musik” in Stuttgart with professor Klaus Schochow. Later she moved to Paris where she continued her studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Michel Debost. She won several international competitions including Palmi, Ancona, Stresa, and the Rotary-Preis Stuttgart, the Darmstadt Stipendiumpreis and the Pro Musicis Award. Between 1988 and 2006 she was principal flute with the Chamber Orchestra of Paris (Ensemble Orchestral de Paris). She makes regular appearances as a soloist at the most prestigious venues and festivals (including Salle Pleyel and Theatre des Champs Elysées – Paris, Carnegie Hall – New York, City Hall Theatre – Hong Kong, Leo S. Bing Theatre - Los Angeles, Auditorio Leon de Greiff – Bogotá, Auditorio Nacional, Madrid, Prague Spring Festival, La Quincena San Sebastian, Spain) as well as with various chamber and new music ensembles from France, Spain and the Czech Republic. She has recorded on radio, television and for many different labels. A CD dedicated to the music of Camille Saint-Saëns (Odelette and Romance for flute and orchestra, EMI France) was rewarded with a “Diapason d’Or” in France and her recital CD of 20th-Century Czech Music (LH Promotions) was evaluated with the highest score in “Harmonie,” the Czech musical magazine. Ms. Novakova has had teaching positions in Paris and Valencia (Spain) and has led masterclasses in Europe, South and Central America, and Asia. She is currently Associate Professor of Flute at Soochow University in Suzhou, China. Suzanne Snizek, flute Award winning flutist Suzanne Snizek (Flute Talk Magazine Competition, the New York Flute Club Competition, the Mid-South Young Artist Flute Competition and the 2017 REACH award for excellence in artistic research) is currently an Associate Professor of Music at UVic. Her innovative research on “Suppressed Music” has been published by Böhlau Verlag - Vienna, Routledge - New York, Armand Colin - Paris, World ORT and presented at numerous venues including Chutzpah! Festival (Vancouver, CA), Cambridge University (UK), Forum Voix Étoufées (Strasbourg, FR and Berlin, DE) Banff Arts Centre (Alberta, CA), Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy and l’École Militaire (Paris, FR). �An internationally renowned performer, in 2018-19 Dr. Snizek will be a guest artist-clinician at the Festivale Internacional de Mùsica (Loja, Ecuador); California Polytechnic University (San Luis Obispo, USA); Suzhou University and Shanghai East Normal University (China) and the featured guest artist of the 2019 Edmonton Flute Festival. Dr. Snizek is an Altus artist. Yoomi Kim, piano Pianist, conductor, and composer Yoomi Kim received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at the University of Cincinnati where she also completed her Master of Music degree in Conducting with choral emphasis. In addition, she had the privilege of working with Dr. Joel Hoffman, composition faculty chair at the University of Cincinnati, for her cognate degree in Composition. Dr. Kim holds her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Montreal respectively. She has studied piano intensively under the tutelage of Dr. Robert McDonald, Professor Marc Durand, and Professors Eugene and Elisabeth Pridonoff. Dr. Kim’s conducting skills have been developed under the guidance of Dr. Earl Rivers and Dr. Stephen Coker. She has been invited to participate in a number of international orchestral conducting masterclasses, including ones taught by Maestro Ed Spanjaard and Maestro Kenneth Kiesler. Through these masterclasses, Dr. Kim has had the opportunity to conduct the Berlin Sinfonietta and Budapest Symphony Orchestra MAV. As a music director, Dr. Kim has taught chamber orchestra, choir, and piano at the Lester B. Pearson United World College of the Pacific where she has also composed and arranged music for the college’s various concerts. Bach’s Sonata in G Major, BWV 1019: first with harpsichord and again on piano.
