Fluent in orchestral, chamber, solo, traditional, and popular music, Merrie joined the full-time faculty at the University of Victoria’s School of Music in 2016. Merrie holds a BMus from her native Calgary and an MMus from Northwestern University where she studied with the late Vincent Cichowicz. Her musical travels have taken her around the globe with performance highlights including Spoleto Festival Italy, Musik Contemporaire Strasbourg France, Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan hall, Stratford Festival, Hungary’s Niyrbator Festival, and many solo appearances with Canadian orchestras. Merrie’s solo recording “Songs to the Moon” has been featured on TVO Studio 2 and CBC Radio and she is currently working on a recording to highlight the trumpet in settings of world music. Merrie has appeared as a presenter and adjudicator at the International Trumpet Guild Conference and the International Women’s Brass Conference. Principal trumpet with the Thunder Bay Symphony from 1999-2018, Merrie has held the same position with the Victoria Symphony and Orchestra London Canada. Merrie is an endorsing artist for Wedge Mouthpieces and is a Bach trumpet artist for Selmer-Conn. Pierre Schryer is one of Canada’s leading traditional fiddlers, honouring the Franco-Ontarian traditions of his heritage which started at fiddle competitions along with his triplet brothers over 40 years ago. An expert of traditional styles from Irish, Scottish, Québecois, to Canadian Old Time, American Swing, or Gypsy Jazz, Pierre has established himself as a gem on the music scene among fans and fellow musicians. 6 Albums, JUNO nominee and Canadian Folk Music nominee, Pierre tours North America, the UK and Ireland captivating audiences with his musical finesse, genuine warmth and stunning technical ability. As a solo performer Pierre has received numerous titles and awards including Canadian Open Fiddle Champion, Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion, Violoneux Championnat, and North American Irish Fiddle Champion. Pierre is also an avid educator at fiddle camps around North America, and the Artistic Director of several large scale productions including the 16-year Canadian Celtic Celebration. Andrew Hillhouse has had a varied career in music as a touring bandleader in the Anglo-Celtic music world, a choral director, a music and culture scholar, and a festival organizer. As founder and manager of the folk rock/funk band Mad Pudding, he toured North America and Europe through the 1990s. He has also toured with several of the Celtic music scene’s most respected and exciting acoustic musicians, including innovative fiddler Zavellennahh Huscroft, champion Canadian fiddler Pierre Schryer, Irish flute player Nuala Kennedy, and Juno winners The McDades. His first solo CD, Passages, has an underlying theme of travel and transformation, alternating between traditional music, original songwriting, and song interpretations. He is the Artistic and Executive Director of the Harrison Festival of the Arts as well as a respected teacher and workshop facilitator. He performs regularly as a soloist and orchestral and chamber musician. Dr. Earle is dedicated to contemporary Canadian clarinet music, while also enjoying traditional repertoire. Dr. Earle is committed to music education having been a high school band director, Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, lecturer at Washington and Lee University, clarinet instructor at the El Sistema inspired Saint James Music Academy, and maintaining a private studio. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of British Columbia, a Master’s degree from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music from Acadia University. Among his numerous accolades for performance and research, Dr. Earle has received grants from the British Columbia Arts Council, Canada Council, and the Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award. He continued his studies at the University of Victoria and then pursued the viola at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Clayton was Principal Violist with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Ashland Symphony and the National Repertory Orchestra. He has also performed with the Victoria, Vancouver Island, New World Symphony and National Arts Centre Orchestras. As an avid chamber musician, he has performed in the Music at Memorial and the Atlantic String Quartet Recital series, and at the National Arts Centre, Toronto Summer Music Festival and the Vancouver Academy of Music. He has also been in residence at the Perlman Music Program, and the Orford and Banff Arts Centres. After joining the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 2013, Clayton has immersed himself in the local arts scene; making appearances at the Edmonton International Jazz Festival, Edmonton Recital Society, Early Music Alberta and Kent Sangster’s Obsessions Octet. He made his Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Alberta Baroque Ensemble solo debut in February and March of 2016 respectively. In addition to performing he is also on faculty at the Grant MacEwan Conservatory of Music. Aside from playing violin and viola, Clayton is fond of playing the piano and ukulele, and in his free time he may be spotted around Edmonton sipping on lattes and lifting heavy weights in the gym. Dr. Lisa Tahara is a soloist, chamber musician, collaborative pianist and teacher currently living in Toronto, Ontario. Upon completion of her undergraduate degree from the University of Victoria, she moved to Toronto to begin her graduate studies. After receiving her Masters of Music, Lisa went on to pursue her Doctorate of Musical Arts degree, which she completed in 2015. Over the years, Lisa has won numerous prizes in festivals and competitions at the local, provincial and national level, including the Canadian Registered Music Teachers’ Association Competition, the Canadian Concerto Competition, the Canadian Music Competition, and the Shean Piano Competition. Since making her orchestral debut with the Burnaby Symphony Orchestra at fifteen, Lisa has performed with numerous orchestras across Canada, such as the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the Quebec Symphony Orchestra, the Georgian Bay Symphony Orchestra, and most recently, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to performing solo works, Lisa thoroughly enjoys playing chamber music and was invited to attend the Banff Collaborative Piano Internship in 2012 and 2014. She is also a founding member of the Amarok Ensemble. After their 2014 debut at Integral House, the Amarok Ensemble attended the 2015 St. Lawrence String Quartet Seminar in Stanford, California where they were featured in the International Showcase. Selections will be announced from the stage. BIOGRAPHIES Patrick Boyle, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at UVic, is a fearless sonic explorer driven by discovery. His frontiers are in performance (trumpet and guitar), improvisation, composition and education. Originally from Newfoundland, Dr. Boyle appears on over 50 commercial releases and 3 acclaimed solo albums. CBC Radio has called him a “trumpet personality” and “one of Canada’s top jazz musicians.” Tom Vickery is a leading figure on the West Coast jazz scene. Equally talented on both trumpet and piano, in 1993 he participated in a national tour of Canada with the Canadian Forces Jazz Quintet for the Department of National Defense. For the past 10 years he has played with the awardwinning Dixieland Express Jazz Band, and the Tom Vickery Trio has been the house band at Hermann’s Jazz Club for more than 14 years. Don Cox plays tuba, double bass, and electric bass. He is one of the most in-demand musicians in Victoria, BC. Don is an integral member of the Capital City Syncopators: a modern take on prohibition-era jazz and country swing. Don’s tuba lays down the foundation of this eccentric 5-piece playing hot jazz, novelty songs, and hits from the 1980’s. Toronto-based drummer Morgan Childs has built an international career as a performer and educator with some of the world’s finest musicians. Morgan is highly regarded among his peers for his deep swing feel, sensitivity, versatility and musicality, as well as his reverence for jazz history and wide-ranging musical vocabulary.
