After finishing studies in his hometown, he attended the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague where he studied harpsichord with Ton Koopman and organ with Jos van der Kooy, graduating with a master’s degree in Early Music. Throughout his career Marco has performed at the most prestigious venues and festivals in Europe, the USA, Canada, South America, the Middle East and Asia, such as Château de Versailles, Oude Muziek Utrecht, Styriarte Festival in Graz, Misteria Paschalia Kraków, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall in New York and Seoul Arts Center. From 2008-2011, Mr. Vitale worked at the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, Syria, where he taught early music performance practice and performed concerts together with Syrian musicians. He is the co-founder and musical director of Contrasto Armonico, an ensemble specializing in Baroque operas and the performance of music in the Italian style using period instruments and historically informed performance practices. In 2012 he founded his own record label ayros, which features recordings by Contrasto Armonico and other artists. In a collaboration with ayros, Marco is currently involved in recording the Complete Italian Cantatas by Handel, a thrilling project that will bring to light many undiscovered jewels of Handel’s which have yet to be either edited or recorded. Marco has appeared on several radio and TV broadcasts, including the specialized music channel Mezzo.tv. In addition to ayros, he has recorded for Alia Vox , Naïve , and Brilliant Classics. Mr. Vitale appeared as a guest conductor of the Warsaw Chamber Opera between 2015 and 2017, performing a variety of repertoire from Monteverdi madrigals to Mozart symphonies. In 2016-2017 he revived the opera Semiramide riconosciuta by Leonardo Vinci, conducting from the harpsichord at the Baroque Opera festival in Warsaw. This was the first time in three centuries that this opera had been performed. In 2018 he composed Il ratto di Helena, an opera in 17th century style based on a libretto written by Virgilio Puccitelli (1636). The opera was commissioned by The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, and performed in Vilnius in celebration of 100 years of Lithuanian independence. Marco gives masterclasses in harpsichord and early music performance practice. He is the artistic director of the Arcadia Early Music Academy workshop in Poland and teaches at La Pellegrina summer school in the Czech Republic. He gives masterclasses, lectures and workshops at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, Fondazione Paolo Grassi in Martina Franca (Italy), ESMUC in Barcelona, the Higher Institute of Music in Damascus, and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Since 2017 Marco has been the music director of the Denman Baroque Workshop & Festival organized by Andrew Fyson and Robert Newton, which takes place every spring on Denman Island, British Columbia. Following a New York solo recital, The New York Times wrote: “The Canadian pianist Arthur Rowe made an immediate and positive impression…before eight bars had gone by, one knew he was capable of vigor without heaviness, energy without excess of drive. It was first-rate playing: a kind of execution tinglingly alive to the shape and contribution of each phrase.” Reviewing a solo recital in London England, The London Times spoke of his “unusual clarity of articulation,” and “poetry of expression,” and David Burge, writing in The San Diego Tribune said, “Rowe is a marvelous pianist…even when he is pushed to the limit by extreme virtuosic demands….he can concentrate all of his considerable talents on vital matters of phrasing, tone and ensemble.” Arthur Rowe has recorded with various artists for the Crystal, ebs, Innova, GM and Fanfare labels. In 2007, he released an all-Schubert recording on the Centaur label (available on iTunes). Fanfare magazine’s review says, “Rowe’s reading (of the posthumous B-flat Sonata) is one of the most beautiful I have heard…The D. 899 Impromptus are equally impressive…his purling right-hand runs recall Schnabel’s velvety sound…every harmonic change is underscored by a delicate nuance of color change.This kind of expression cannot be taught; it is in the bloodstream and the soul.” A highly respected chamber musician, Mr. Rowe regularly collaborates with artists and chamber ensembles across North America. He has been a guest artist at summer festivals in Blossom, Interlochen, Niagara, Santa Fe and Seattle, as well as in France, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. In 2004 The Harrington String Quartet joined forces with Arthur Rowe and William Preucil in New York for a performance of the Chausson Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet, which was reviewed by Harris Goldsmith as a “reading that rivaled the benchmark recordings by Franzescatti/ Casadesus/Pascal, and Heifetz/Sanroma/New Arts.” Other performances this season include concerts with the Dover, Rolston and Penderecki Quartets. In 2020, Arthur Rowe and Jonathan Crow, Concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony, will perform all 10 Beethoven violin sonatas as part of the Beethoven celebrations. In addition to his performing activities, Arthur Rowe is the Artistic Director of both the Victoria Summer Music Festival, and The Jeffery Concerts in London Ontario. In the past, Adam has been a member of the St. Christopher Singers, Victoria Philharmonic Choir, Victoria Choral Society and Pacific Opera Victoria Chorus. He also teaches private singing lessons and is a music instructor at the Taber Music School. James Yi, piano James Yi began his musical education in clarinet performance under the tutelage of Patricia Kostek. His journey has taken him into the field of collaborative piano, with the guidance of Arthur Rowe, accompanying for the Glenlyon Norfolk School, Salt Spring Singers, Cordova Bay United Church, and various soloists and musicals. He is also a member of Victoria’s Baroque chamber group, Raven Baroque. In the past, he has performed with the UVic Orchestra, the UVic Wind Symphony, GVYO, GVCB, and the Meridiem Wind Orchestra.
