Allegro Yariv Aloni, viola �Lafayette String Quartet How do you compress a full 32 years together into a single comprehensive biography? The members of the LSQ are Artists-in-Residence at the University of Victoria where they teach violin, viola, cello and coach chamber music to some of Canada’s finest young string players. They are active in the Victoria community working with young people in the GVYO, connecting with the strings program in the public schools, performing in Pacific Baroque, hosting Quartet Fest West and continuing their annual Health Awareness Forum every fall. They are frequently sought-after to adjudicate in local, provincial and national music festivals. All of this while maintaining an active touring schedule with concerts this year taking them to Mexico, the Unites States, the Yukon, Saskatchewan, BC and Ontario. They have performed all over North America and Europe and are always met with critical acclaim. Their various quartet projects, often in partnership with esteemed colleagues, have included the Complete Beethoven Cycle, the Second Viennese School, Bartók’s Legacy and the Complete Cycle of Shostakovich String Quartets. Upcoming projects include performing the complete viola quintets of Mozart (with Yariv Aloni, 2019), and Beethoven’s Legacy (2020) honouring one of their favourite composer’s 250th anniversary by exploring the friendships and influences that lead to the Beethoven Quartet phenomenon. The LSQ and colleagues will delve into how these remarkable quartets changed the course of musical history and continues to change it even today. Yariv Aloni, viola Beloved colleague Yariv Aloni is one of Victoria’s most artistically involved musicians. A wonderful conductor as well as violist, Aloni is the Artistic Director of the Victoria Chamber Orchestra, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the West Coast Symphony Orchestra in Vancouver and has recently been appointed Artistic Director of the Sooke Philharmonic. As the violist of both the Penderecki String Quartet and the Aviv Piano Quartet, he has performed in many concert halls around the world. A regular guest with the Vetta Ensemble, he continues to perform in various combinations at numerous chamber music concerts, festivals and recital series all over Canada. The Quintetto belongs to Brouwer’s first compositional period, in which influences ranging from Bartók to Stravinsky were juxtaposed with the Afro-Cuban rhythmic tradition. The piece opens with a rhythmically driven Allegro in which the role of the guitar seamlessly shifts between solo lines and lines that are part of the ensemble texture. This leads to a meditative and tranquil second movement whose luscious harmonies contrast with those in the Allegro. The cheerfully rhythmically driven third and final Vivace movement has harmonic and thematic reiterations of the previous movements with added bluesy harmonies. It brings the work to a jovial finish. Liova Bueno: Cuarteto de Cuerdas Cuarteto de Cuerdas is a free-form fugue comprised of four section-like movements. All four sections are linked through their roles in the larger fugal form and by the two themes that are explored throughout the work using different musical textures and characters. The first section is a fugue in itself: a fuga con alcune licenze which introduces the work’s two musical themes. Section two continues the development of the fugue’s thematic material in free-form episodes in the guise of a vals. In section three the initial fugal theme and episodes from the first section re-enter and are transformed through developmental variation. The final section is based on the second theme from the initial section, which is developed in a quasi-stretto containing elements from the three previous sections. Section four ends with a coda in which the work’s initial musical material is quietly and calmly resolved. Ferdinand Rebay: Kleine Fantasie for Guitar and String Quartet Rebay’s Kleine Fantasie explores Brahms’s haunting Lied O wüsst ich doch den Weg zurück, Op. 63 no. 8 (“Oh, if I only knew the road back”), in variation form. Its uninterrupted sections develop the Lied’s theme by interweaving different variations which serve to express non-verbally the longing for comforting past memories, recollections and reflections present in the poem set by Brahms. This performance is the Canadian premiere of the work. �Felix Mendelssohn: Octet for Strings in E-flat Major, Op. 20 Mendelssohn wrote the Octet for Strings in 1825 at the tender age of 16. Thanks to his intensive musical training and exposure to the most influential artists of the time, his precocious talents were cultivated from early on. The Octet is remarkable due to its abundance of memorable melodies, the finely calibrated balance in the ensemble writing, and the ingenious use of counterpoint throughout, a technique he learned from his extensive studies of Bach’s works. The Octet was dedicated to his friend, violinist Eduard Reitz, for his 23rd birthday. It is presumed that the Octet was premiered at a private concert in the Mendelssohn residence — perhaps Reitz and Mendelssohn were among the performers. The work starts with a soaring and graceful Allegro which then proceeds to a tender and pensive second movement. A mysterious third movement Scherzo follows, followed by the final movement which begins with an intense and wild fugue and concludes with energetic exuberance. Notes by Liova Bueno BIOGRAPHIES Canadian classical guitarist Alexander Dunn has performed to enthusiastic acclaim in Canada and around the world. In solo recital, concerto, and chamber music he is consistently praised for his musicality, technique and rich sound. An experienced chamber musician, he has worked with principal players from the Pacific Baroque Orchestra (Vancouver), Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik (Toronto), in duo concerts with guitarists Pepe Romero, and with numerous other musicians and vocalists. He has been a featured soloist with the CBC Vancouver Radio Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, La Jolla Symphony, Malaga Sinfonico, New England Symphony, and many major US orchestras as a guest artist with Los Romeros. Regarded as one of the finest performers on period guitars, he has collaborated with fortepianist Michael Jarvis, baroque violinists Paul Luchkow, Marc Destrube, soprano Anne Grimm, and others. A contemporary music enthusiast, Dunn has played many new works for solo guitar, ensemble, and projects including projections, dance, narration, and electronics. Dr. Dunn holds Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a PhD in Musicology from the University of California, San Diego, where he was a protégé of Pepe Romero. His ground-breaking dissertation, “Robert de Visée’s Theorbo Works: An Introductory Study” is highly regarded, as is his research into nineteenth century performance practice. �Founded in 2015 during the String Quartet Seminar of Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Cuarteto Chroma is the first string quartet to enter UVic’s MMus in Performance– Emphasis String Quartet program, under the guidance of the Lafayette String Quartet. They were the top prize winners at the National String Quartet Competition “La Superior’’ (2017) in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico; the Manuel M. Ponce prize at the Festival de Música de Cámara of Aguascalientes, Mexico; and the first prize at the Mateo Oliva National Chamber Music Competition. Members of the quartet have given music seminars at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon; the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música in Recife, Brasil; and the Centro de Innovación y Educación in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. They have also performed in music festivals such as Allegra, NUMTEMPA, and the Festival Camerata Siglo XXI, where they premiered new music and performed with guest artists. Ann Elliott-Goldschmid is first violinist of the renowned Lafayette String Quartet, artists-in-residence at UVic. A dedicated teacher and performer, her students grace major orchestras, string quartets and graduate schools. Together with her colleagues she offers a unique style of learning based on a strong emphasis in chamber music study which serves to enhance solo and orchestral playing. With the LSQ she has performed all over North America and Europe with repertoire that spans the entire spectrum of string quartet literature from the early works of Haydn and Bocherini to music of our time composed for the LSQ by such esteemed composers as Murray Adaskin, Kelly-Marie Murphy and R. Murray Schafer. Included in their vast repertoire, the LSQ has performed the complete Beethoven Cycle, and, to celebrate the quartet’s 30th anniversary, they performed the complete Shostakovich Cycle in a five-concert series. The LSQ often performs quintets with esteemed guests. As a soloist, Ann Elliott-Goldschmid has appeared with Symphony Nova Scotia, the Victoria Symphony, Victoria Chamber Orchestra, Sooke Philharmonic, West Coast Symphony Orchestra and the Galiano Ensemble. Praised for her “meltingly beautiful solos” (The Detroit News) and performances of “depth and insight” (Times Colonist), cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni is a cofounding member of the celebrated Lafayette String Quartet, artists-in-residence at UVic since 1991. She has performed both as a soloist and recitalist and has been a guest artist with the Sooke Philharmonic, Vetta Ensemble of Vancouver, Victoria Summer Festival, Eine Kleine Summer Music, Chamber Music San Juan, and the Victoria Symphony’s Summer Cathedral Series, and served as principal cellist with the Galiano Ensemble since its inaugural season in 2000. Pamela was principal cellist with the Detroit’s Renaissance City Chamber Players, a Ford Motor Company artistin-residence at the Center for Creative Studies Institute of Music and Dance and a faculty member at Oakland University. She earned her BMus and MMus degrees from California State University, Northridge and Indiana University. Her principal teachers include Peter Rejto, Janos Starker and Paul Katz. �Violinist Simon MacDonald began his studies and Victoria in 1980, and in 2017 returned home to assume the role of String Faculty Department Head, and Artistic Director of the Young Artists Collegium at the Victoria Conservatory. Before returning to BC, Simon was active in Western Canada as a first violinist in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Principal Second violin of the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and most recently, Concertmaster of the Regina Symphony Orchestra. Simon loves playing anything put in front of him; he has premiered numerous new works after 17 years at the Winnipeg New Music Festival, initiated the first ever Beethoven Quartet Cycle in the city of Regina with the Regina Symphony Chamber Players, and has enjoyed playing in everything from Baroque orchestras to touring Broadway Productions. Simon is thrilled to be back on the West Coast, and very grateful to join the amazing community of musicians who live here. Violist David Visentin is widely known throughout Canada as a performer, conductor, pedagogue and arts administrator whose leadership and creative experience in the performing arts has successfully advanced classical music from coast to coast. In 2011, founded Sistema Toronto and was appointed as the organization’s President and CEO. Sistema Toronto is a free and uniquely immersive after-school social program through music for at-risk children and youth, modeled after the highly successful program known as el Sistema. For six years, as dean and associate dean of The Glenn Gould School and Young Artists Performance Academy of The Royal Conservatory of Music, David led the school through its historic transition to becoming a leading professional training program for classical musicians and singers. He also served as the principal conductor of the Royal Conservatory Academy Orchestra. He continues to perform and is the current and founding Artistic Director of the Salt Spring Chamber Music Festival. Born in Montreal, he grew up on Canada’s west coast and played his first notes on the tuba at age 13. Prior to moving to Victoria in 2005 he was tubist in Calgary’s Foothills Brass Quintet, touring across North America and working on numerous recording projects. He has performed with many orchestras including the Boston, Santa Fe, and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras. Two years as Principal Tuba of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra took him to Durban, South Africa, where he learned to SCUBA dive and took time to explore the country, including the vineyards near Capetown. Since moving to Victoria he has remained active as a clinician for Yamaha Canada and an instructor at PRISMA, an orchestral training program located in Powell River. He holds a Master’s Degree from the University of New Mexico and a Bachelor’s from UVic where he was honoured as a Distinguished Alumni in 2011. Praised by The New York Times as “clarion-voiced and vibrant,” Benjamin Butterfield is recognized internationally as one of Canada’s finest tenors having performed with the world’s finest ensembles and conductors, in operas, concerts and recitals throughout North America and Europe as well as in Ukraine, the Middle East, Asia and New Zealand. He is also featured on over 30 CDs and DVDs. Professor Butterfield is head of voice and co-head of Performance at UVic’s School of Music. He was the 2015 recipient of the Craigdarroch Award for Artistic Expression and in 2018 was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Recent engagements include directing Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi at the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Naples, Italy; performing Mozart’s Requiem with the Baltimore Symphony under Marin Alsop; performing Jeffrey Ryan’s Afghanistan: Requiem for a Generation with the Calgary Philharmonic, and recording works of Bach and Handel with the Bach Choir of Bethlehem for Analekta. Mr. Butterfield is represented by Schwalbe and Partners in New York City. Wendell A. Clanton is Assistant Teaching Professor of Saxophone and Vocal Jazz at the University of Victoria’s School of Music. An important area of interest to him is working with students to develop engaging course content and opportunities for learning, performance, education and leadership. Wendell graduated from Northwestern University where he studied with the legendary saxophonist Dr. Frederick L. Hemke and Mr. John Paynter, preeminent conductor of symphonic wind repertoire. Canadian clarinetist Shawn Earle is currently an instructor at the University of Victoria and performs regularly as a soloist, chamber, and orchestral musician. Dr. Earle completed his Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of British Columbia examining contemporary Canadian clarinet music. He also holds a Masters degree from UVic, a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor of Music from Acadia University. Dr. Earle is committed to music education having been Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia, Lecturer at Washington and Lee University, a high school music teacher, clarinet instructor at the El Sistema inspired Saint James �Music Academy, delivering numerous masterclasses, and maintaining a private studio. Among his numerous accolades for performance and research, Dr. Earle has received grants from the British Columbia Arts Council, Canada Council, and the Nova Scotia Talent Trust Award. Originally from Vancouver Marianne Ing has been performing in Victoria for thirty years. This year she is a first year Master’s of Music student at the University of Victoria. When not at UVic Marianne divides her time between teaching band, strings and choir at Central Middle School and playing trumpet professionally. She plays prinicipal trumpet with The Palm Court and The Sooke Philharmonic orchestras. Marianne also plays often with the Victoria Symphony, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society and the Victoria Operatic Society. Pianist, conductor, and composer Yoomi Kim received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance at the University of Cincinnati where she also completed her Master of Music degree in Conducting with choral emphasis. In addition, she had the privilege of working with Dr. Joel Hoffman, composition faculty chair at the University of Cincinnati, for her cognate degree in Composition. Dr. Kim holds her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Montreal respectively. She has studied piano under the tutelage of Robert McDonald, Marc Durand, and Eugene and Elisabeth Pridonoff. Her conducting skills have been developed under the guidance of Earl Rivers, Stephen Coker, Kenneth Kiesler and Ed Spanjaard. Merrie Klazek is a versatile and respected artist in the world of music performance and education. A professional trumpeter in orchestral, chamber, solo, traditional, and popular music, Merrie joined the full-time faculty at UVic’s School of Music as Assistant Professor in 2016. Merrie holds a BMus from her native Calgary and an MMus from Northwestern University in Chicago, where she studied with the late Vincent Cichowicz. Her musical travels have taken her around the globe with performance highlights including the Spoleto Festival Italy, Musik Contemporaire Strasbourg France, Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan hall, Hungary’s Niyrbator Festival, and numerous solo appearances with Canadian orchestras. Merrie was principal trumpet with the Thunder Bay Symphony (1999-2017), the Victoria Symphony and Orchestra London Canada and spent 14 years on sessional faculty at Lakehead University. Merrie’s first solo recording, Songs to the Moon, has been featured on TVO Studio 2 and CBC Radio. Scott MacInnes received his MMus from the University of Victoria (2011) and his BMus at the University of Toronto (2005). Scott moved to Victoria after winning a one-year bass trombone position with the Victoria Symphony for the 2005/6 season. The following year Scott secured the position of Principal Bass Trombone with the Vancouver Island Symphony. Scott is an extremely active chamber musician both as a member of the Pinnacle Brass Quintet and iTromboni. Demonstrating his great versatility Scott can also been seen playing jazz, pop and rock around Victoria, as well as in most of the musical theater pits. As an instructor Scott holds positions at both the University of Victoria and the Victoria Conservatory where he teaches chamber music, a pep band and private instruction. Percussionist Kelby MacNayr graduated from UVic in 2004. MacNayr has a love of drum set and percussion and specializes in jazz and world music. He performs at festival and concerts across North America and his work can be heard on national radio and television in Canada and the U.S. MacNayr studied percussion and drum set at the University of Toronto, the Banff Centre and UVic and conducts research and study in Cuba, New York and L.A. MacNayr works as a performer, composer, music director and educator, teaching as a guest faculty with the Port Townsend Jazz Festival and University of Idaho Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. Alex Olson is pleased to be the current sessional string bass teacher in the UVic School of Music. 1976-77 was his first season with the Victoria Symphony but after departing for further studies in Vancouver and New York he returned to be contracted continuously with the VS since 1982. Canadian pianist and Steinway Artist Arthur Rowe is a critically acclaimed recitalist, soloist with orchestra and chamber musician. He has recorded with various artists for the Crystal, ebs, Innova, GM and Fanfare labels. A highly respected chamber musician, Mr. Rowe regularly collaborates with artists and chamber ensembles across North America. He has been a guest artist at summer festivals in Blossom, Interlochen, Niagara, Santa Fe and Seattle, as well as in France, New Zealand, and Yugoslavia. 2016/17 performances included recitals with William Preucil, Concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra,Vancouver’s Vetta Ensemble, and the Dover, and Cecilia Quartets, both past winners of the Banff International String Quartet competition. Having previously held positions at the University of Iowa and the University of Western Ontario, Arthur Rowe is Professor of Piano at the University of Victoria and the Artistic Director of the Victoria Summer Music Festival. �Award winning flutist Suzanne Snizek (Flute Talk Magazine Competition, the New York Flute Club Competition, the Mid-South Young Artist Flute Competition) is currently an Associate Professor of Music at the University of Victoria. Dr. Snizek’s research on “Suppressed Music” has been published by Böhlau Verlag- Vienna, Routledge - New York, Armand Colin- Paris, and World ORT and presented internationally including at the Chutzpah! Festival (Vancouver), Cambridge University (UK), Forum Voix Étoufées (Strasbourg and Berlin) and l’Ecole Militaire (Paris). The excellence of her creative research was recognised by the University of Victoria’s 2017 REACH award. In 2018-19 Snizek will be a guest musician at the Loja Festival in Ecuador, a guest teacher and artist at Suzhou University in China and the featured guest artist of the 2019 Edmonton Flute Festival. Allison Zaichkowski of White Rock, BC, began her horn studies at age 22 quite by chance when she met Dr. Wayne Jeffrey at Kwantlen University College. He encouraged her to switch to this precarious instrument and her life as a horn player began there. After studying horn with him for 2 years, she completed degrees at UBC and U of Calgary, focusing on solo competitions. She premiered in Canada James Beckel’s Horn Concerto The Glass Bead Game with the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble. After completing her MMus, she joined the army reserves in 2009 and moved to Ottawa. In 2012, she transferred to the regular forces and joined the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces. After 8 years in Ottawa, she was excited to be posted back to BC in 2016, joining the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy in Esquimalt. Since then, the Naden Band has taken her to many exciting places such as Dieppe (France) and Hawaii and she is looking forward to going to Belgium and Chile this coming November.
