Beethoven, the Pastoral and Musical Meaning
in the Op. 28 Piano Sonata
Dustin Anderson will address the different ways that the pastoral topic is presented in music and
examine whether or not the Op. 28 piano sonata merits its “Pastoral” nickname. Following this
investigation, Dustin will consider how Beethoven’s use of pastoral signals, in combination with
other gestures, may indicate a greater artistic statement that is overlooked by contemporary
musicians. The lecture will conclude with a complete performance of the Op. 28 sonata.

Op. 28 Sonata in D Major “Pastoral”

Ludwig van Beethoven

Allegro
Andante
Scherzo - Allegro vivace
Rondo - Allegro ma non troppo

In fulfillment of the MUS 595 requirement toward the MA in Musicology and Performance degree.
