All selections are original compositions and improvisations. Specific selections will be announced from the stage. A short note from Patrick Boyle: Over a decade ago, I got a call from the manager of The Ship Inn, a popular bar in my hometown, St. John’s, NL. He said that there was a touring musician performing tonight and he thought I should be down and sit in. That musician was George McFetridge. We ended up playing a few tunes that night, I recall for certain we played “Tangerine” and had a marvelous time. Fast forward to 2016 on the other side of the continent, when I was on a gig in Victoria’s Chinatown, with bassist James Young for the first time. There was a deep connection made straight away, and I was pleased when James invited me to play in this trio format with George. George and James are two-thirds of The May Trio with drummer Paul Fitterer, whose self-titled release is available at the intermission. The trio performing for you this evening practices very nearly every single week, working on our own compositions and improvisations. The music you hear this evening has never been played before and will never be played again. Thank you for your attention and for supporting live music. ABOUT THE ARTISTS: Dr. Patrick Boyle (trumpet) is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at UVic. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada, he appears on over 50 commercial releases and 3 acclaimed solo albums. CBC Radio has called him a “trumpet personality” and “one of Canada’s top jazz musicians.” He has cultivated the rare ability to synthesize a range of influence — including jazz, rock, trad, Balkan, and South Indian music — which all come together into a rhythmically compelling musical voice. In 2009, Patrick performed at Carnegie Hall with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain. www.patrickboyle.ca George McFetridge (piano) made his way early on through deep knowledge of standard repertoire, leading him to work in Toronto with Lee Konitz, among many others. Beyond that, his aim has always been to arrive at a personal music, culminating so far in the May Trio and B..M.. and Y... George makes open musical landscapes that blur improvisation and composition. His interest is in the musical unknown free of style or idiom. James Young (bass) believes crossing musical boundaries is the key to his multistylistic approach to improvisation and composition. Upon moving to Victoria, James embraced Bluegrass, Blues, Folk and Salsa with such luminaries as Doug Cox, Ken Hamm, and Cuban Singer Adonis Puentis. His exploration of new musical styles includes work with Ukrainian Shumka, Big Band Swing, Jazz, Free Jazz, Rock and Blues. In Edmonton and Banff, James worked with noted Jazz musicians such as Pepper Adams, Ed Bickert, Eddie Blackwell, Lenny Breau, Lee Konitz, Roscoe Mitchell, Phil Nimmons, and Sam Rivers. During their 30th anniversary season in 2016-17, the Lafayette Quartet performed the Shostakovich Cycle to sold out audiences at home in Victoria and in Waterloo, Ontario, and performed concerts across Canada, and in Europe. For five years, the LSQ prospered in Detroit, where its members taught at the Center for Creative Studies/Institute of Music and Dance, and Oakland University. The LSQ itself received coaching from some of the world’s most esteemed quartets — the Amadeus, Alban Berg, and Cleveland — and from violinist Rostislav Dubinsky, of the legendary Borodin Quartet, who served as their “musical mentor” until his death in 1997. The Quartet’s musicianship was recognized early on. In their first years together they were ranked among Musical America’s “Young Artists to Watch,” won the Grand prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and top prizes at the Portsmouth (now City of London) International String Quartet Competition, and the Chicago Discovery Competition. As winners of the 1988 Cleveland String Quartet Competition, the LSQ had the opportunity to study for two years with the Cleveland Quartet at the Eastman School of Music, in Rochester, New York. As Artists-in-Residence at the University of Victoria, their dedication and skill has played a major role in building one of the finest music schools in Canada. In addition to quartet performances and collaborating with colleagues in the School of Music, members of the quartet teach individual lessons, coach chamber music groups, and give studio masterclasses on a weekly basis. They have been principal players of the Galiano Ensemble of Victoria since its inception and continue to serve the community promoting strings in the public schools through outreach programs and the strings mentoring course at UVic. In June, they offer Quartet Fest West, an intensive quartet seminar that brings together young musicians from all over the world.Their annual Health Awareness Forum, founded in 2006, offers timely insights from top health experts on a wide range of topics. They received honorary doctorates from University Canada West and were awarded the inaugural Craigdarroch Award for Excellence in Artistic Expression from the University of Victoria. The LSQ has performed across Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe, with concerts often allied with masterclasses and workshops. They had a close and lasting relationship with the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon while playing on the set of Amatis owned by the institution. The LSQ carries a large, wide-ranging repertoire, from the classical period to the present, and has commissioned and premiered music from numerous composers. Since 1990, the LSQ has released numerous CDs on the Dorian, Centrediscs, AdLar, CBC and other labels (including its own).
