In the pop world, he created several albums and hit songs with labels such as CBS and A&M. The number one single Letting Go won him a gold record. He has conducted and arranged for major artists such as Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan and Aerosmith. In the film and television world, he has scored numerous award-winning shows for Disney, Alliance, ABC, FOX, CBS, PBS, CBC and the Cartoon Network. In the live stage world, he has composed music for contemporary dance, musicals and large-scale worldwide television events including the Calgary Olympics, the Victoria Commonwealth Games, the Vancouver Olympics and the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony with Cirque Du Soleil. He composed This Is My Home for the Canadian Pavilion at Expo 86 — a song that has been performed at every Canada Day since and has become a Canadian tradition. In the concert world, his symphonic wind band compositions have been performed worldwide. Recently, he had the honour of recording the CD, Undercurrents, with the renowned Naden Band of the Canadian Navy in Victoria, BC. Robert is a proud member of the American Bandmasters Association and the Screen Composers Guild of Canada. He lives in Vancouver, BC with his wife, choreographer and director, Marlise McCormick. www.bobbuckley.com Dr. Adam Jonathan Con, UVic Chorus director Dr. Con is Associate Professor of Music at University of Victoria School of Music. His duties include teaching Elementary Music Methods, Music Education Foundations, Choral Conducting, Choral Organization, Rehearsal Techniques and Literature, Middle and Elementary School choir methods, conducting the UVic Chorus and supervising music education students. He served in similar capacities at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, California State University, Long Beach, at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. Dr. Con earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education (Secondary Instrumental and Choral) and a Master’s Degree in Music Education (Elementary) from the University of British Columbia. At Florida State University, he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Music Education (Choral Conducting Emphasis) studying with Rodney Eichenberger, Andre Thomas, Clifford Madsen and Judy Bowers. In addition, Dr. Con is a certified Orff Schulwerk specialist and has extensive study experience as an Alexander Technique practitioner. Dr. Con has presented and conducted at prestigious events such as the National American Orff-Schulwerk Conference, Podium: Canadian National Choral Conducting Symposium, the Canadian National GALA Conference, the National Canadian Orff-Schulwerk Conference, the Alberta Provincial Music Educator’s Conference, the British Columbia Provincial Music Educator’s Conference, the British Columbia Choral Federation Chorfest and Youth Choir, the Unitarian Universalist Musicians’ United States National Conference, Ohio State Music Educator’s Conference, the Georgia State American Choral Directors Association Conference, and the Georgia Music Educator’s Conference. His talent and ability to work with all levels of musical expe- �rience is grounded in 15 years of diverse K-12 public school music teaching which includes Orff, Kodály, and Dalcroze based general music, French immersion music, middle and secondary school choral, vocal jazz, concert band and jazz band. His professional conducting experiences include numerous All-State and honor choirs, civic orchestras, professional musical theatre, community and professional choirs, concert bands, and 38 years as a church choir director and organist. Currently, he serves as the University of Victoria convocation organist. David P. Gagnon, assistant conductor Born in Quebec, David P. Gagnon joined the Canadian Forces Reserve in Sherbrooke in 2003 where he played and eventually conducted until 2012 when he was accepted as a Regular Force member with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy and moved to Victoria. Since then, apart from playing saxophone in the ensemble and as a soloist, you can see him as the Drum Major in front of the Band on parade or in the recording studio when needed. Mr. Gagnon has also helped produce all of the latest recordings of the Naden Band: Snapshots of Excellence, Portraits of Excellence, and Undercurrents, which features the music of Robert Buckley. In Quebec, David performed with his saxophone quartet and a variety of big bands and concert bands. He taught saxophone, flute and clarinet and conducted elementary to high school level bands. He also toured Quebec with the well-known singer Dan Bigras conducting his big band and performing at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Mr. Gagnon studied saxophone and recording at the College de Sherbrooke before graduating from McGill University in Music with Honors in Music Technology. He completed his Master of Music Degree in Conducting under the supervision of Dr. Gerald King in 2016, where he had the opportunity to conduct the UVic Wind Symphony as well as saxophone and trombone ensembles. Dr. Gerald King, conductor Dr. King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves as the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and is the Head of Music Education. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected conductors, adjudicators, educators and keynote speakers, Dr. King is the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards. In 2003 he was elected into the prestigious American Bandmasters’ Association, when he served as Guest Conductor of The United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own), in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the internationally recognized Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble in celebration of the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. As well, he received the BC Music Educators’ Association Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta Mu (International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). In March 2014 he was chosen to conduct the Ostwald/ Sousa award winning composition, Pale Blue on Deep by American composer Aaron Perrine, with the University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble. Also, in 2014, Dr. King was appointed as the International Member of the Western International Band Clinic University Collegiate Advisory Board. In September 2015 Dr. King was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. �A former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Dr. King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s conducting appearances with regional, national, international, and professional ensembles have been praised for performance quality, artistry, and creativity. Throughout his career he has been a champion of new music, premiering over 30 compositions. Dr. King is also widely recognized as an expert for his ability to link theory and practice in the field of teaching and learning. Among his many recordings and publications is a chapter in the book, Creativity and Music Education, written by seventeen authors from the United States, Canada, Israel, Australia, Great Britain, Spain, and Scotland.The book includes a forward by noted author on creativity, Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi. In addition, Dr. King has completed a well-received DVD—The Craft of Conducting. Dr. King is a Yamaha Artist Educator/Conductor. Dr. Julia Nolan, saxophone Julia Nolan has commissioned numerous works by Canadian composers with a special interest in those from British Columbia including: Denis Bedard, Dorothy Chang, Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel, Stefan Hintersteininger, Jacquie Leggatt, Colin MacDonald, Alan Matheson, Alain Mayrand, John Oliver, Robert Pritchard, Jeffrey Ryan, Farshid Samandari, and Fred Stride. She performs with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver New Music Society, and the Turning Point Ensemble as orchestral saxophonist in addition to performances as soloist. Julia Nolan is looking forward to performances and recording with Saxophilia Saxophone Quartet (Capilano University) and with Jane Hayes and Joan Blackman as part of the Vetta Chamber Music Series and the Langley Fine Arts Concert Series in 2017. Recent performances and guest teaching include the American Saxophone Academy (July 2016) and the University of North Texas (January & April, 2016). In April 2016, Julia Nolan performed the U.S. premiere of Jeffrey Ryan’s concerto Brazen with the Lubbock Symphony at the NASA Biennial Conference and premiered the concerto, Cool Cut by John Oliver with Vancouver’s Turning Point Ensemble. In July 2015, she recorded Prestidigtation by Robert Buckley with the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy. Nolan has been a guest artist-teacher at international saxophone workshops in Taiwan and Hong Kong and performs regularly at the Regional, National and World Saxophone Congresses. Nolan served as an international judge at the 5th Adolphe Sax International Saxophone Competition in Dinant, Belgium (2010) and was the head judge at the International Saxophone Symposium and Competition (ISSAC) in Columbus, Georgia in 2012 and 2014. Julia Nolan is an Artist-Clinician for Yamaha, Canada Ltd. and Rousseau Musical Products. Title A name given to the resource Wind Symphony Description An account of the resource UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works. Reception to follow in the Lounge. �Paul Hindemith, Sonata for Trumpet and Piano In 1939 Hindemith composed his Sonata for Trumpet and Piano. Although other twentieth century composers had written for trumpet, this Sonata is the first multi-movement work for trumpet since the Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos, written in 1796 and 1803. This sonata represents the Gebrauchmusik concept – meaning “utility music,” music composed for a specific purpose, such as for a festival, dancing, for students to perform, or about a specific event. This sonata is about World War II. Hindemith was not Jewish, but at this point he had fled Germany because of pressure from the Nazi Party who were attempting to suppress music they deemed unacceptable. In 1939 Germany annexed Austria and invaded Poland - Hindemith wrote this piece after these events while living in Switzerland before immigrating to the United States in 1940. This sonata is one of the most difficult works in the repertoire not only because of the physical endurance and efficiency demanded to simply play the piece, but also because of the mental and emotional resources required to perform a piece written under intense pressure during this period in Hindemith’s life. The first movement is labeled Mit Kraft (With Strength), and begins with a bold declaration by the trumpet and piano. These youthful statements of resistance recur in the middle and end of the movement, and between each the Nazi’s are heard marching ever closer. The second movement is gentler, a welcome reprieve of innocence and optimism perhaps reflecting on the post-WWI zeitgeist in Germany in the 1920’s. The final movement is the longest, and the center of emotional gravity in the piece. Titled Trauermusik (Mourning Music), the third movement begins with a funeral march, interrupted by a sustained line in the trumpet full of despair. After scenes of lament and death, the troubled journey culminates with the Lutheran chorale Alle Menschen Mussen Sterben – All Men Must die. Motives, sounds, timbres, structures, and instrumentations are informed by scientific phenomena present within each region, and each movement aims to express its own unique aesthetic. He can be heard as soloist in the Grammy Awards’ Best Classical Recording of 2003 — Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony (Telarc) with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Robert Spano. In 2016 he performed the role of Father Thomas Nangle in John Estacio’s new opera, Ours, for Opera on the Avalon in St. John’s, Newfoundland — written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel. Other recent performances include Paolo in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra with Pacific Opera Victoria, Kurwenal in Tristan und Isolde for the Opera di Roma with maestro Daniele Gatti, the baritone role in Jeffrey Ryan’s Afganistan: Requiem for a Generation with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. After a series of recitals across Canada in March, Polegato will return to Toronto to sing the role of Jesus in Elgar’s The Apostles with the Pax Christi Chorale, followed by his debut as Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal at the Festival de Lanaudière under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In addition to Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony, recordings include the Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem (ASO Media), Ben Moore’s Ode To A Nightingale (Delos), his critically praised solo disc, To A Poet, with pianist Iain Burnside (CBC Records), a live period-instrument performance of Messiah with the Handel & Haydn Society (Arabesque Recordings) and Opera Encores (CBC) with tenor Benjamin Butterfield and the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra led by Richard Bradshaw. With the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra he has recorded Bach’s Coffee and Peasant Cantatas (Analekta-Fleur de Lys) and most recently, Handel’s Messiah. His opera recordings include Emmerich Kálmán’s Die Herzogin von Chicago (Decca) with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Gluck’s Armide with Les Musiciens du Louvre (Deutsche Grammophon’s Archiv label). Robert Kortgaard was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He completed his bachelor and master’s degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City. As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he continued his musical studies in Italy and England. Mr. Kortgaard has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia, the Czech Republic and China. He is one of the country’s most respected concert pianists, having appeared with most of the country¹s leading orchestras and recital societies. Mr. Kortgaard has become one of the most in-demand colleagues of Canada’s most esteemed vocalists, and is a frequent partner of sopranos Measha Brueggergosman and Wendy Nielsen, mezzo-soprano Jean Stilwell and cabaret diva Patricia O’Callaghan. For five years, he was resident musician at the University of New Brunswick, and he is now artistic director of the Indian River Festival in Prince Edward Island. Robert Kortgaard recently joined forces with pianist Peter Tiefenbach to create an impressive new ensemble. As two of Canada’s most accomplished and virtuosic musicians, they have been amazing concert and broadcast audiences across the country for many seasons, both as individual artists and in collaboration with some of Canada’s finest musicians. Now they lend their unique gifts to the large and varied body of repertoire for two pianos, four hands.
