Emily Doolittle (b. 1972) Daniel Dorff (b. 1956) �PROGRAM NOTES Binyang I was captivated by a persistent and strikingly melodic birdcall and derived from it the scale underlying Binyang, the first of these two short pieces (each of which can be played separately). Binyang means “bird” in the now defunct Sydney Aboriginal language.The identity of the birds remains a mystery, my whistling it over the phone to ornithologists having left them stumped. The second piece, Interior, remote and mysterious, is an oblique comment on Binyang, starkly in contrast with it’s joyful melodic outpouring. Both pieces were commissioned, with assistance from the Australia Council, by the Sydney clarinetist Peter Jenkin, to whom they are dedicated. Peter had requested a solo work, but as I began to compose, a rhythmic accompaniment for Aboriginal clapping sticks asserted itself and quickly became inseparable from the clarinet line. – Ross Edwards Flowers of St. Francis In 2012, bass clarinetist Barbara Haney (recently retired bass clarinetist from “The President’s Own” US Marine Band) asked if I would accept a commission to write her a solo piece to premiere at the 2013 ICA ClarinetFest, to be held in Assisi, Italy. This was a fast “yes”! Barbara and I both played in the Haddonfield Symphony and had back-to-back bass clarinet lessons with the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Ron Reuben in the early 1980s, and while I was a composer keeping up with performance, it was clear that Barbara was a stellar bass clarinetist with a big career ahead. Occasional bass clarinet duets together was an inspiration that still helps my playing 30 years later.The opportunity to compose a solo work to be premiered in Assisi, by a virtuoso with amazing sound, as the first piece I’d ever write for the instrument I knew best, quickly suggested a clear idea for a suite about St. Francis, and within a day I’d drafted the following scenario: I.The Flowers, Celebrated by St. Francis Flowers are introduced through an innocent yet florid song, followed by a chant-like passage from the “voice” of St. Francis.The movement then continues as a duet between St. Francis and the flowers. The flowers represent all the fruits of creation as well as simply being flowers in the garden. II. St. Francis Preaching to the Birds St. Francis’s chant begins the movement as a flowing cantilena, interrupted by a dramatic eruption of bird calls (taking advantage of the bass clarinet’s tremendous range and agility).The movement then continues as a dialog between St. Francis and the birds. III. St. Francis Pacifying the Wolf A ferocious interruption representing an angry wolf who terrorizes the village is perfect for an eager bass clarinetist. St. Francis is heard befriending the wolf, and their duet progresses from heated drama to a peaceful resolve as their themes transform into each other and end gently. IV. St. Francis Preaching to the Fish This sempre pp movement may be imagined as occurring underwater; an opening “glub-glub” motive evokes bubbles rising through water, and the wiggly sixteenths are like gentle fins waving. The dialog is more subtly integrated than in previous movements, and St. Francis’s voice alludes to other musical fish. V.The Starry Skies, Celebrated by St. Francis The inspiring majesty of the infinite sky is salted with twinkling stars; St. Francis’s voice becomes one with the harmony of the Universe. – Daniel Dorff BIOGRAPHY Melissa Goodchild is an active teacher and freelance clarinetist in Victoria, British Columbia. She performs music for solo clarinet, chamber groups, and music for large ensembles. In 2019 she joined the faculty of the Victoria Conservatory of Music and in 2021 joined the faculty at the University of Victoria as clarinet instructor. She enjoys teaching students of all ages in private as well as group settings including chamber music, clinics for schools, and adjudicating for music festivals across Canada. She received her Bachelors of Music from the University of Windsor and also studied at Western University where she earned her Artist Diploma in Clarinet Performance and Master of Music in Performance and Literature. After completing her studies in London, Ontario in 2008 she moved to Edmonton, Alberta where she taught and performed throughout the city. In 2012 she moved to Saskatoon Saskatchewan where she held the position of Second Clarinet with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra until May 2018. While in Saskatchewan, Melissa collaborated with percussionist Kevin Grady, and together they continue to perform repertoire including contemporary works. The principle behind a sound is the circulation of the sound wave, symbolized by tides in the title. The oscillating dynamics, the arc-shape melodies, the repetitions of the single motive all bring the sense of circulation. Decay, also as a necessary component of a sound, yet can be lengthened and zoomed in. If reversing the fading away of a sound decay, the high partials will grow from the original sound, outweigh the attack and function like a new sound itself. The subtle use of piano sustain pedal also intensifies and spatialises the decay process of both the piano and the clarinet played inside the piano. (House), Julien Haynes (House) is a work based on the painting Untitled by Zdzisław Beksiński Hele, Enrico Tuazon Hele was inspired from a traditional Visayan folk lullaby from Philippines. The original lullaby is traditionally sung by a sister or any other female relative to help the child fall asleep while the mother is working. This piece focuses on the perspective of the son longing for the mother. Dedicated to Dora and Miho. Ang iyong haplos ay aking hele, Ang iyong yakap ay aking tahanan, O nasaan ka minamahal na ina? Nocturnes, Luc Faris This is a suite of six short movements exploring the hours of the night from midnight to sunrise, alternating between states of dreamlike contemplation and nightmarish restlessness. Each movement contains a kind of transformation from one state to another: form into formlessness, peace into uneasiness, and finally darkness into light. The piece experiments with a combination of standard notation and freer elements, such as graphic notation, synchronisation through group pulsations rather than metre, interrupting voices, and improvisation with varying levels of constraints. Dysfunction, Dana Wenzel Dysfunction is about a crippling aspect of my everyday life. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD, and executive dysfunction is one of the most intense symptoms. I frequently find myself immobilised by anxieties and deadlines, but no matter how hard I try, I am unable to begin and I become stuck for hours as a time. This piece represents that feeling, and illustrates to the rest of the world how this debilitating daily experience makes me feel. I whether Me/Breath, Deniz Pekmezci This piece focuses on the concept of becoming whole as an individual, through weeding out the unwanted ideas and learned behaviour with a meditation-like process. The first movement is a depiction of the process as it may seem from the outside, and the second is the close-up to the mosaic that is the individual. The Garden Beyond this Perceptual Veil, Sean Kiley Open score for ‘choose your own adventure’ loops. The fall may best be understood not as a moral deviation or as a descent into a carnal state, but as a drama of knowledge, as a dislocation and degradation of our consciousness, a lapse of our perceptive and cognitive powers—a lapse which cuts us off from the presence and awareness of other superior worlds and imprisons us in the fatality of our solitary existence in this world. Steven Capaldo �PROGRAM NOTES Superman March John Williams Following on the success of his mid-1970s scores for Jaws and Star Wars, John Williams produced yet another iconic movie theme with Superman in 1978. At the initial recording session for the film, the theme made such an impact on director Richard Donner that, unable to contain himself, he exclaimed “Genius! Fantastic!”, promptly ruining the first take. The theme also leaves an indelible mark on the memories of many a filmgoer, particularly in the way it accompanies the film’s main titles, which literally fly on and off screen like the Man of Steel himself. Thus, the Superman theme has become so inextricably linked with its filmic association that it can seem as though it is the only musical representation possible for the character. How does Williams manage to do this? As in so many of his other themes, by carefully coordinating the musical features so that they converge and provide us with a fleshed-out picture of the thing it represents. In this case, and as many have pointed out before, the music even seems to speak the name “Superman”. © Mark Richards Overture to ‘Nabucco’ Giuseppe Verdi Nabucco is an Italian-language opera in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The libretto is based on the 1836 play under its original name of Nabucodonosor and was first performed at La Scala in Milan on 9 March 1842. Nabucco is the opera which is considered to have permanently established Verdi’s reputation as a composer. He commented that “this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star”. The best-known number from the opera is the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate / “Fly, thought, on golden wings”, a chorus which is regularly given an encore in many opera houses when performed today. © windrepertory.org Hoe Down from ‘Rodeo’ Aaron Copland Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo is a celebration of the American West.The commission for Rodeo came, surprisingly enough, from the classically-oriented Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, with the music by Copland and the choreography �and scenario by Agnes de Mille.The ballet was precedent setting – there were said to be 22 curtain calls at its premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 16, 1942 – and the success of this ballet insured that dance would thrive as an integral part of American musical theatre. © Dave Kopplin As You Like It: A Poem for Orchestra after Shakespeare William Walton Sir William Turner Walton was an English composer who wrote music in several classical genres and styles, from film scores to opera. His best-known works include Façade, the cantata Belshazzar’s Feast, the Viola Concerto, the First Symphony, and the British coronation anthems Crown Imperial and Orb and Sceptre. After the 1936 film based on the Shakespeare play was released, it wasn’t until 1989 that some of the music was crafted by Christopher Palmer into the current orchestral suite of five movements. This transcription for wind orchestra intends to maintain the integrity of the original work by honouring as much of the orchestration as possible. © Walton Trust/Steven Capaldo The Sea Hawk Erich Korngold Erich Wolfgang Korngold was an Austrian composer and conductor who, having lost his Austrian nationality, adopted US citizenship. A child prodigy, he became one of the most important and influential composers in Hollywood history. He was a noted pianist and composer of classical music, along with music for Hollywood films, and the first composer of international stature to write Hollywood scores winning two Academy Awards for his efforts. The Sea Hawk is a 1940 American adventure film that stars Errol Flynn as an English privateer who defends his nation’s interests on the eve of the launch of the Spanish Armada. © Korngold Society Snow Luc Faris Snow attempts to evoke a vast, winter landscape, at times desolate and still and at times alive with the movement of freshly-falling snowflakes. These various textures are achieved through rhythmic techniques that grant the individual musicians some degree of autonomy, leading to the creation of a more natural soundscape, and the impression of the ensemble being at once many distinct voices and one unified entity. © Luc Faris �The Lord of the Rings Howard Shore Howard Leslie Shore is a Canadian composer and conductor, most noted for his film scores. He has composed the music for over 80 films, including The Fly, The Silence of the Lambs, Gangs of New York, A History of Violence, King Kong, and Spotlight. He won three Academy Awards for his work on The Lord of the Rings, and the scores are often considered to represent one of the greatest achievements in the history of film music in terms of length of the score, the size of the staged forces, the unusual instrumentation, the featured soloists, the multitude of musical styles and the number of recurring musical themes used. The music for this suite comes from all three movies: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. The suite also features the songs In Dreams, The Edge of Night, and Into the West, as well as solos from the violin and instruments throughout the wind ensemble. Capaldo DMA, MPerf, BEd (Mus), AMusA (Distinction) Dr. Steven Capaldo has distinguished himself as one of the most respected music educators, wind conductors and conductor educators in Australia, earning academic and musical recognition internationally. Currently, he is an Associate Professor of Music Education & Conducting, Wind Symphony Conductor and Co-Head of Music Education at the University of Victoria. Steven has previously held positions in Music Education at the University of Wollongong (Australia) and the University of Victoria, and was the Conductor of the Sydney University Wind Orchestra and the UNSW Wind Symphony. Completing a DMA in Wind Conducting at UNLV, a Master of Performance (Orchestral and Choral Conducting) at the University of Sydney, a Bachelor of Education (Music) at the University of Melbourne, and an AMusA on Saxophone (with Distinction), he has extensive experience working with symphony orchestras, wind orchestras, and chamber ensembles. An active writer, Steven composes, arranges and transcribes music for large ensembles, festivals and concerts. His works have been performed by groups in Australia, Canada, Japan, and the United States, recorded on Klavier records (US), and published with Brolga Music and Murphy Music Press. He has been listed as a composer in the book The Band Down Under and has been a finalist in several international composition competitions. An Assistant Producer and Co-Editor for eight Klavier Records CD, Steven became a full voting member for the US Grammy Awards in 2010 and was Chair of the Australian Jury Panel for the 2017 International Eurovision Song Contest. In-demand as a conductor, clinician and adjudicator, Steven has worked at local, state/ provincial, national and international levels (including Canada’s MusicFest), and as Conductor of the British Columbia Honor Wind Ensemble. Committed to providing professional learning opportunities for music educators and conductors, Steven has been a conducting clinician for the Canadian Armed Forces, the 2017 Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference, the Chief Conducting Clinician for the 2017 Qld ABODA Conducting Camp, and an Associate Conducting Instructor for the 2016, 2017 & 2018 NSW ABODA Conducting Camps. In 2018, Dr. Capaldo conducted a Qld State Honours Ensemble and presented at the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference. Ben Litzcke BMus Ben decided to study music after playing in the BC Honor Wind Ensemble conducted by Dr. Capaldo in 2007. Completing his BMus on clarinet at UVic in 2013, Ben has spent the intervening years playing and conducting in several community bands around Greater Victoria.
