It is impossible for me to express how much my father meant and continues to mean to me and my music. Joseph Watras was a philosophical man, and following his lead, I began to think of the loss we all experience as human beings when we lose someone close to us. The piece became not only a lament for him, but an expression of a shared sense of mourning that we all feel as part of humanity. —Melia Watras Melia Watras: Luminous Points for violin solo (2013) I began with the image of a mysterious, secret garden, where the night sky, brilliantly studded with unending stars, is reflected in a pond. The sky becomes the water and the water the sky. I wrote Luminous Points for violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim, hoping to imbue the work with his gentle character and molto dolce E string playing. —Melia Watras Atar Arad: Esther for violin and viola (2008) My late mother, Esther, to whom this music is dedicated, was born in Bulgaria to a Sephardic family before moving to Israel at a very young age. I remember her as a woman who could never stop singing: joyful and lively Bulgarian songs for the benefit and delight of her family and friends (hence the inspiration for my Toccatina), or melancholic, tender, sweet Sephardic tunes while on her own, mostly when working on her paintings (she was a well known artist). Esther, I believe, is a brief nostalgic reflection on my childhood and the music I used to hear a long time ago. —Atar Arad Melia Watras: Liquid Voices for violin and viola (2013) Liquid Voices takes its inspiration from Virginia Woolf ’s short story, The Fascination of the Pool. Woolf has been a profound, influential and special author to me. Her experimental nature and ever-changing writing style make her elusive. She was lyrical, poetic and forward thinking. I was taken with the story’s fluidity, imagery and depth, which helped shape the structure and basic concept for my piece: voices floating on top of each other. The pitch centers of Liquid Voices are taken from the harmonic series played by the violin in the first few measures of the work. —Melia Watras �BIOGRAPHIES MEILA WATRAS Hailed by Gramophone as “an artist of commanding and poetic personality” and described as “staggeringly virtuosic” by The Strad, violist Melia Watras has distinguished herself as one of her instrument’s leading voices. She has performed in major venues such as Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and Alice Tully Hall, while achieving acclaim as an important recording artist. Watras has recorded 5 albums, while performing on 13 others as a chamber musician. Recent and upcoming highlights include the release of her latest disc from the Sono Luminus label, 26, which features world premiere recordings of her own compositions, and video projects with violist Garth Knox (performing with Knox on his duos, Viola Spaces for Two) and video artist Ha Na Lee. Watras’s discography has received considerable attention and praise from the media. Ispirare, which features the world premiere recording of Pulitzer Prize-winner Shulamit Ran’s Perfect Storm (a piece that was written for Watras), made numerous Best of 2015 lists, including the Chicago Reader’s (“Watras knocked the wind out of me with the dramatically dark beauty of this recording”). Short Stories was a Seattle Times Critics’ Pick, with the newspaper marveling at her “velocity that seems beyond the reach of human fingers.” Of her debut solo CD (Viola Solo), Strings praised her “stunning virtuosic talent” and called her second release (Prestidigitation) “astounding and both challenging and addictive to listen to.” As a composer, Watras’s music has been performed in New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Bloomington (IN), Denmark and Spain, by artists such as violist Atar Arad, cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir and violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim, and has been recorded for two upcoming CDs. With the Corigliano Quartet, Watras has concertized and recorded extensively, with the ensemble’s Naxos label CD being named one of the Ten Best Classical Recordings of the Year by The New Yorker. She is violist of Frequency, for whom she has also composed, and a member of Open End, with whom she has performed in France, Denmark and the United States and recorded for Albany Records. Watras studied with Atar Arad at Indiana University and served as a teaching assistant to the Juilliard String Quartet while at the Juilliard School. She is currently Professor of Viola and chair of Strings at the University of Washington School of Music, where she holds the Adelaide D. Currie Cole Endowed Professorship and was previously awarded the Donald E. Petersen Endowed Fellowship and the Royalty Research Fund. Watras has given viola and chamber music classes at schools such as Indiana University, Cleveland Institute of Music, Strasbourg Conservatoire (France), and Chosun University (South Korea). She has thrice returned to her alma mater, Indiana, to teach as a guest professor. �MICHAEL JINSOO LIM Violinist Michael Jinsoo Lim has been praised by Gramophone for playing with “delicious abandon” and described as “bewitching” by the Seattle Times. He is concertmaster and solo violinist of the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra (“surely the best ballet band in America”—New York Times) and is in-demand as a chamber musician and performer of new music. Hailed by the Los Angeles Times as a “conspicuously accomplished champion of contemporary music” for his work as co-founder of the renowned Corigliano Quartet, Lim is also artistic director and violinist of the Seattle-based ensemble Frequency. Recent performance highlights include the world premiere of Andrew Waggoner’s violin concerto (written for Lim), live performances on Danish Public Radio and appearances as soloist for the Stravinsky violin concerto at New York’s City Center, as part of Pacific Northwest Ballet’s 2016 NYC tour. Lim’s 2016-17 season will include performances of concertos by Prokofiev and Stravinsky with PNB. As a member of the Corigliano Quartet, Lim has won numerous awards, including the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the ASCAP/CMA Award for Adventurous Programming, and has performed in the nation’s leading music centers, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Lim has performed onstage with Pacific Northwest Ballet in George Balanchine’s Duo Concertante and Christopher Wheeldon’s After the Rain. Lim has also worked as a record producer on three critically acclaimed albums by violist Melia Watras and co-producer on a fourth. Lim attended Indiana University, where he was a pupil of the legendary Josef Gingold. He later studied chamber music at the Juilliard School and taught there as an assistant to the Juilliard String Quartet. He currently serves on the faculty of Cornish College of the Arts. Please tell us about your concert experience in this quick Audience Survey: https://finearts.uvic.ca/forms/music/audience/ �BIOGRAPHIES PATRICK BOYLE (trumpet and guitar) Newfoundland trumpeter Dr. Patrick Boyle embodies the jazz spirit by synthesizing a range of influences into a compelling original musical voice. CBC Radio has called him a “trumpet personality” and “one of Canada’s top trumpet players and jazz musicians in general.” Patrick is Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Victoria where he teaches courses in theory, history, music business, music education and performance. An in-demand sideman unbound by genre, Patrick appears on over 50 recordings on trumpet and guitar, including 3 critically acclaimed solo recordings. Patrick performed at Carnegie Hall with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and drummer Steve Smith. He has also played with Duane Andrews, Great Big Sea, Mickey Dolenz, Bill Frisell, and Fred Penner among others. Patrick composed the music to the play Colony of Unrequited Dreams, based on the acclaimed novel by Wayne Johnston and directed by Head of English Theatre Jillian Keiley, which opens at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on January 27, 2017. He also co-composed the score for the NFB film 54 Hours about the 1914 sealing disaster off the coast of Newfoundland. In 2010, he was commissioned by the CBC to compose and record Well Enough Alone, a multi-movement suite acknowledging the 60th anniversary of Newfoundland’s confederation with Canada. Patrick is currently documenting the history of jazz music in Newfoundland. After Forgetting, a new vinyl record with Bill Brennan, Mike Downes, and Mike Billard, will be released in 2017. PHIL DWYER (saxophone) Originally from Canada’s West Coast, Phil Dwyer burst on the jazz scene in Canada and internationally in his late teens as a saxophone prodigy and by his early 20s was, to quote former Globe and Mail journalist Mark Miller, “startling jazz audiences with his unprecedented command of both tenor saxophone and piano” and with his “extraordinarily authoritative playing….set the country on it’s ear”. His full time music career started in 1985 and from 1989-2004 Dwyer lived in Toronto, where he was a key fixture in the major jazz clubs, concert halls and recording studios. During that time Dwyer led his own various groups and co-led bands with bassist Dave Young, multi-instrumentalist and composer Don Thompson, and pianist/organist Doug Riley. Bassist Young, well known for his long tenure with Oscar Peterson, had this to say about working with Dwyer…..”Phil Dwyer, in my estimation, is one of the great tenor players of jazz. We worked together in several groups while Phil lived in Toronto and he always brought fantastic energy and creativity to the musical setting �we were involved in. He is a complete musician — a pianist and composer/arranger as well as a reed player. It would be difficult to over estimate the natural talent and commitment of this artist.” While keeping a busy schedule as a performer and ‘first-call’ studio musician in the Toronto scene Phil also found time to travel and perform across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia, including tours with pop music icon Gino Vannelli, trumpet star Ingrid Jensen and with his own groups. In the mid-1990s Dwyer began developing his craft as a composer and arranger, studying composition and orchestration with the eminent composer Michael Colgrass. Subsequent to those studies Dwyer’s work was commissioned and recorded by the Gryphon Trio, Amici, Roberto Occhipinti, CBC Orchestra, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Hard Rubber Orchestra, the Art Of Time Ensemble and Duke Trio. A 2010 commission from Mark Fewer and McGill University led to the creation of a major work “Changing Seasons”, a 40 minute concerto for jazz and string orchestras accompanying violin soloist Fewer. The 2011 recording of that piece, featuring Fewer with the Phil Dwyer Orchestra, won a Juno Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Among other Juno winning recordings in Dwyer’s discography are collaborations with Guido Basso, Don Thompson, Molly Johnson, Hugh Fraser, Joe Sealy, Terry Clarke, Diana Panton, and Dave Young. As evidenced by his Order of Canada citation, Dwyer has also been active as an educator. In addition to his work from 1989-2001 as a sessional instructor at York University in Toronto he has also been a guest lecturer/clinician for leading music music programs in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. From 2005-2014 he owned and operated the Phil Dwyer Academy Of Musical And Culinary Arts on Vancouver Island. This innovative program brought together some of Canada’s top young music students with an illustrious faculty comprised of many of the leading names in contemporary jazz music. In the fall of 2014 Dwyer entered his first year of studies in the Faculty of Law at University of New Brunswick. He continues to remain active as a musician and also as an advocate for increased public awareness of mental health issues. TONY GENGE (Hammond B3 organ) Canadian composer and pianist Anthony (Tony) Genge was born in Vancouver in 1952. He worked as a performer of jazz and rhythm and blues for a number of years before studying composition formally. Genge was a student of Morton Feldman between 1982 and 1985, completing a Ph.D. in composition at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He also studied composition with Bruce Mather at McGill University and Martin Bartlett and Rudolf �Komorous at the University of Victoria. In 1979, he studied with the Japanese composer Jo Kondo in Tokyo. During this time he also visited several Pacific-Rim countries, studying their traditional music. By the 1990s, the style and influences in his music had become increasingly diverse, and since that time his music has been characterized by its distinctive harmonic language, elegant orchestration and postmodern mix of musical elements. Genge’s solo, chamber, and orchestral music, the first of which dates from the mid-1970s, has been performed and commissioned by leading soloists and ensembles throughout Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, and his music has also been used for dance and film. Currently, he divides his time between Antigonish, Nova Scotia on the East Coast of Canada, where he is Professor of Music at St. Francis Xavier University, and Victoria, B.C., on the Canadian West Coast. In addition to his work as a composer, Genge continues to perform and record as a jazz pianist and can be heard on his critically acclaimed jazz trio recording Blues Walk. KELBY MACNAYR (drums and cymbals) Drummer/composer/band-leader Kelby MacNayr performs groundbreaking original music, soulful swinging jazz, reaching contemporary music and traditional music from around the world. A dynamic and creative musician MacNayr performs in Canada and abroad with leading musicians from New York, Seattle, Portland, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto & Europe. A faculty member of the renowned Jazz Port Townsend Festival under director John Clayton, staff at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival, Kelby is continually reinventing himself as a performer, composer and educator. In November 2013 the Kelby MacNayr Quintet released the much-anticipated album The Measure of Light featuring Phil Dwyer, Dan Lapp, Miles Black & Tom Wakeling. Born and raised on Canada’s west coast, Kelby is connected to the small but mighty musical community in his home-town, a great and varied musical community across the country and an ever-changing world of musicians in the Pacific Northwest, and across the US. Known for her “exceptionally rich and vibrant tone” (Washington Post) Lorna has performed as guest principal with Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Academy of St-Martin-in-the-Fields, Chamber Orchestra of Europe and has been fortunate to work with conductors such as Haitink, Gergiev, Rattle, Solti, Harnoncourt, Muti and Honeck. Before immigrating to North America in 1998, Lorna was co-principal flute of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, England. As a soloist, she has given concerto performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in the UK and Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Philharmonia, and Victoria Symphony in Canada and the Nashville Chamber Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, San Luis Obispo Symphony and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the USA. Career highlights include a performance of Penderecki’s flute concerto with the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra under the baton of the composer in 2004 and more recently, a performance of the Nielsen Flute Concerto with the Pittsburgh Symphony in 2014 with Maestro Tortelier. As a chamber musician and recitalist, she has performed in Europe, North America, Australia, Singapore and Japan in such venues as London’s Wigmore Hall, Edinburgh International Festival, the Louvre, Paris, the Schubertsaal of Vienna’s Konzerthaus, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. Her performances have been broadcast on CBC Radio in Canada, BBC Radio, NPR (USA), Netherlands Radio and ABC (Australia). She has made chamber music recordings for EMI, Decca ASV, Naxos and Meridian. Her recording for Naxos of Bax’ Chamber Music with the group ‘mobius’ was selected as Editor’s Choice in Gramophone Magazine. Along with Duo partner Heidi Krutzen, Lorna has released two CDs on Skylark Music: “Taheke, 20th century Masterpieces for flute and harp” and “Canada, New Works for flute and harp.” As a member of Trio Verlaine (with her husband, violist David Harding and harpist, Heidi Krutzen) Lorna has recorded two CDs: “Fin de Siècle,” the music by Debussy and Ravel, and “Six Departures”, featuring works by Bax and Jolivet as well as new commissions by Schafer and Cotton. Both the Trio and Duo are committed to broadening the repertoire and have contributed eight new commissions to date. Lorna’s first flute and piano recital disc, “ The Hour of Dreaming” with pianist Piers Lane was released on the Beep label in 2014. Having taught at the University of Michigan and the University of British Columbia, Lorna is now a member of the flute faculty at Carnegie Mellon University. She has given master classes at universities, conservatoires and flute festivals in the UK, USA, Japan and Canada, including Julliard School and the Royal Academy of Music. She often teaches at summer schools, including the Pender Island Flute Retreat, the William Bennett International Summer School, and the Galway Flute Festival. Lorna studied with David Nicholson in Scotland, and with Michie and William Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
