Weigel Fund. �BIOGRAPHIES James Campbell A Juno award winner and Order of Canada recipient, James Campbell has been called “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist,” by the Toronto Star, “a national treasure” by the CBC and “one of the top half dozen clarinetists in the world today” by Fanfare Magazine. He has performed as soloist and chamber musician in over 35 countries with over 60 orchestras including the Boston Pops, the London Symphony and Philharmonic, and every major orchestra in Canada. He has collaborated with Glenn Gould and Aaron Copland and toured with over 35 string quartets, including the Guarneri, Amadeus (when he replaced an ailing Benny Goodman on a tour of California) and Vermeer. James first played with the Lafayette Quartet in 1988 on his debut concert at the Indiana School of Music in Bloomington and they have been friends ever since. Of his over 45 recordings, the BBC and The Times of London rated his recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet as the best available. He has been named Canada’s Artist of the Year, awarded the Queen’s Gold and Diamond Jubilee Medal, an Honourary Doctor of Laws, and has recently been inducted into the CBC’s Classical Music Hall of Fame. James Campbell has been Artistic Director of the Festival of the Sound since 1985 and was Professor of Music at the famed Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University from 1988-2019. His students now occupy positions in the Boston Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, and St Louis Symphony, to name a few. Campbell is the subject of numerous features and cover stories in Clarinet Magazine (USA), Clarinet and Sax (UK), Piper Magazine (Japan), Gramophone, and in the book Clarinet Virtuosi of Today, by British author and clarinet authority Pamela Weston. He has now returned home to Canada and continues to give concerts and masterclasses throughout the world. Kelly-Marie Murphy With music described as “breathtaking” (Kitchener-Waterloo Record), “imaginative and expressive” (The National Post), “a pulse-pounding barrage on the senses” (The Globe and Mail), and “Bartok on steroids” (Birmingham News), Kelly-Marie Murphy’s voice is well known on the Canadian music scene. She has created a number of memorable works for some of Canada’s leading performers and ensembles, including the Toronto, Winnipeg, and Vancouver Symphony Orchestras, The Gryphon Trio, James Campbell, Shauna Rolston, the Lafayette, Cecilia and Afiara String Quartets, and Judy Loman. In addition to many academic scholarships awarded in Canada and England, Dr. Murphy has also won prizes for her music, dating back to 1992. Her career was launched when she won first prize and the People’s Choice Award at the CBC Young Composer’s Competition in 1994 (string quartet category). Since then, Dr. Murphy’s music has been performed around the world by outstanding soloists and ensembles, and has had radio broadcasts in over 22 countries. Her music has been interpreted by renowned conductors such as Sir Andrew Davis, David Brophy, Bramwell Tovey, Mikko Franck, �and Mario Bernardi, and has been heard in iconic concert halls, such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Auditorium Radio France in Paris, and The Mozarteum in Salzburg. Kelly-Marie Murphy was born on a NATO base in Sardegna, Italy, and grew up on Canadian Armed Forces bases all across Canada. She began her studies in composition at the University of Calgary with William Jordan and Allan Bell, and later received a Ph.D. in composition from the University of Leeds, England, where she studied with Philip Wilby. After living and working for many years in the Washington D.C. area where she was designated “an alien of extraordinary ability” by the US Immigration and Naturalization Service, she is now based in Ottawa. Dr. Murphy is a recipient of the Jules Léger Prize, and the Azrieli Music Prize. Lafayette String Quartet For over 30 years, the LSQ has been teaching and performing at the University of Victoria. Concert tours have taken them all over North America and Europe. In this, their final year together, the LSQ will be performing throughout Canada and in the United States. The LSQ and Nicole Mandryk recently recorded and filmed the newly commissioned work Singing through Generations by Nicole Mandryk and Leila Lustig. Information on its release coming soon. Following visual and auditory clues, the visitor positions herself inside the sculpture, hands resting lightly on vibrating knobs that project up through a green shelf. The shelf stands at working height, 37 inches, the same height as a carpenter’s bench or a kitchen counter. Two more vibrators, mounted beneath the green shelf, massage the visitor’s thighs. Two curved panels on either end of the shelf amplify the vibrators’ sound and help to create a noisy environment, but in the end, I believe that the haptic event carries the day. — Mowry Baden The celebrated Beethoven pianist Anton Kuerti once said that Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonata was perhaps the most perfect example of classical sonata form he knew. It does indeed follow the strictest classical rules of thematic development throughout. However, the material Schwitters uses is entirely nonsense syllables, with the exception of the alphabet at the very end. This year marks the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of Ursonata’s composition – Schwitters originally performed it as an extemporisation of a sound poem by fellow artist Raoul Hausmann, fmsbwtözäu pggiv-..?mü. I first performed Ursonata in Victoria in 1976, and since then many times, across North America and abroad. Notable are the performances with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance company in New York, Boston, Avignon, Amsterdam, Ljubljana, and Paris. — Christopher Butterfield Kurt Schwitters was born in Hanover, Germany in 1887. A collagist, writer, poet, typographer and performer, he fled to Norway in 1937 to avoid the Nazi authorities, who considered him “a degenerate artist.” After the German invasion of Norway, he escaped by boat to England in June 1940, where he was interned as an enemy alien until November 1941. He then lived in London and the Lake District, where he died in 1948. His greatest work is possibly the Merzbau, a sculptural creation that took over his entire house in Hanover (unfortunately destroyed by a bomb in 1942). It exists now only in photographs. Christopher Butterfield is a composer, performer and artist. He has played in rock bands, sung as a soloist and in choirs, conducted orchestras, and performed with dance companies. He has taught composition in the School of Music at UVic since 1992. Puppets Forsaken is a sculpture/sound collaboration between Natali Leduc and David Gifford formed in 2019. Originally inspired by the intonarumori of Futurist Luigi Russolo, author of the manifesto “Art of Noises” (1913), they construct acoustic noise generators, and perform for old growth trees that are no longer there, theory symposiums, live radio and noise shows. They sold two copies of their first album, Greatest Hits. They also entered a telekinesis competition, which they lost. The Noisebau was inspired by Kurt Schwitters’ Merzbau, and received financial assistance from the Canada Council for the Arts and BC Arts Council.
