“Out there, we’ve walked quite friendly up to Death;
Sat down and eaten with him, cool and bland, –
Pardoned his spilling mess-tins in our hand.
We’ve sniffed the green thick odour of his breath, –
Our eyes wept, but our courage didn’t writhe.
He’s spat at us with bullets and he’s coughed
Shrapnel. We chorused when he sang aloft;
We whistled while he shaved us with his scythe.
Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier’s paid to kick against his powers.
We laughed, knowing that better men would come […]”

“Not just that every day more of our life is used up and less and less of it is left, but this too: if we live longer, can
we be sure our mind will still be up to understanding the world—to the contemplation that aims at divine and
human knowledge? If our mind starts to wander, we’ll still go on breathing, go on eating, imagining things, feeling
urges and so on. But getting the most out of ourselves, calculating where our duty lies, analyzing what we hear and
see, deciding whether it’s time to call it quits—all the things you need a healthy mind for . . . all those are gone.
So we need to hurry.”

— INTERMISSION —

This piece focuses on the concept of becoming whole as an individual, through weeding out the unwanted ideas
and learned behaviour with a meditation-like process. The first movement is a depiction of the process as it may
seem from the outside.

“Even if you’re going to live three thousand more years, or ten times that, remember: you cannot lose another life
than the one you’re living now, or live another one than the one you’re losing. The longest amounts to the same as
the shortest. The present is the same for everyone; its loss is the same for everyone; and it should be clear that a
brief instant is all that is lost. For you can’t lose either the past or the future; how could you lose what you don’t
have? […] the longest-lived and those who will die soonest lose the same thing. The present is all that they can
give up, since that is all you have, and what you do not have, you cannot lose.”
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

PROGRAM NOTES (Selected works)
Spacey III: Final - Sonia Ng
The idea behind SPACEY III is to utilize both electronic and acoustic sounds in order to create contrasting
ambience and changing melodies. Starting as a lively duet between piano and glockenspiel, the second half
of the piece introduces electronic elements along with a change of atmosphere before finally returning
back to form. The piece contains several changing elements, creating an unpredictable direction of where
the piece is heading. SPACEY III is a blend of experimental noise and classical harmonies.
Blue Garden - Evan Wright
Blue Garden is piece based on minimalism, inspired by the likes of Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, and Henryk
Mikołaj Górecki. Blue Garden is supposed to feel like an experience, like walking through a garden of your
own emotions.
Over-Easy - Tobo Vergara Ulloa
This piece was written to embody the feeling of an early morning breakfast with the people you love.
As the composition develops the voices of the instruments begin to intertwine, symbolizing the chatter
around a breakfast table.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging - Chris Stewart
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a piece inspired by an MRI scan that Chris underwent in the beginning of
2022. The piece aims to not only capture the sounds that MRI machines produce, but also the emotions
that he felt while inside the machine. It is music of both curiosity and wonder, but also claustrophobia and
anxiety. He hopes you enjoy.
