VIRGINIA ACUÑA began her musical studies at the Conservatorio Nacional Superior de Música in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She then continued her studies in musicology at the University of British Columbia and the University of Toronto before achieving a postdoctoral position at McGill University. Her research focuses on Spanish music and culture of the early modern era, specifically the intersection of gender, politics, and race and witchcraft in Baroque musical theatre. She is the recipient of numerous awards, grants, and prizes. Her writing appears in peer-reviewed articles and conference proceedings. She is also co-author of Claudio Monteverdi: A Research and Information Guide (Routledge, 2018). Virginia joined the UVic School of Music Faculty in 2020. PAUL BEAUCHESNE has been principal tuba with the Victoria Symphony since 2004. He is on faculty as Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Victoria and the Victoria Conservatory of Music and is a guest artist at the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy each summer. Paul has performed across North America with Foothill Brass, and has held a position with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa. He has performed with various ensembles including the Boston Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, and the Vancouver Symphony. Paul has been Section Head of Brass for the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival for many years, is a Yamaha Performing Artist and was named a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Victoria in 2011. BENJAMIN BUTTERFIELD studied voice with Selena James at the Victoria Conservatory of Music and at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. He later graduated from McGill University and was awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts to study in the USA, UK and Italy. He was recognized by the Sullivan Foundation and Oratorio Society of New York and was a participant at the Steans Vocal Institute at the Ravinia Festival, Chicago. In conjunction with his tenure at UVic, Benjamin maintains an active singing career and is represented by Schwalbe & Partners in New York. Performance highlights include Glimmerglass Opera, Montreal Jazz Festival, San Carlo in Naples and Epidaurus in Greece, Welsh National Opera, New York City Opera, Orchestra of St. Lukes at Carnegie Hall and many more. Ben is heard regularly on CBC Radio through multiple recordings. Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, STEVEN DONEGAN enjoys an active life as a performer and educator. Steve holds a BA (Music) and BEd from Lakehead University where he studied with Merrie Klazek, and an MMus in Performance from Memorial University where he studied with Alan Klaus. Currently a member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy, Steve has been the solo trumpeter for royalty many times, most recently for Queen Elizabeth’s memorial proceedings in Victoria. Steve performs regularly with the Victoria Sym- �phony and has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and Ottawa’s Band of the Ceremonial Guard. Passionate about music education, Steve taught band at Terrace Bay Secondary School for two years, and has taught trumpet at Lakehead and Memorial. MERRIE KLAZEK is a versatile and respected trumpet artist in performance and education. Merrie joined the full-time faculty at UVic in 2016. She holds a BMus from her native Calgary and an MMus from Northwestern University where she studied with the late Vincent Cichowicz. Her musical travels have taken her around the globe with performance highlights including Spoleto Festival Italy, Musik Contemporaire Strasbourg France, Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan Hall, Stratford Festival, Hungary’s Niyrbator Festival, and more. Her solo album Songs to the Moon has been featured on TVO and CBC Radio, while Dance Around the Sun (soon to be released) celebrates the trumpet in settings of world music. Presenter, artist and adjudicator at top international brass and music conferences, she is also a guest on popular brass podcasts. Merrie played Principal trumpet with the Thunder Bay Symphony from 1999-2018, and has held the same position with Victoria Symphony and Orchestra London Canada. She is an endorsing artist for Wedge Mouthpieces, Bach Trumpets/Conn-Selmer, and Robinson’s Remedies. DR. SASHA KOVACS holds degrees in Drama and English from Queen’s, and the University of Toronto Graduate Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies (MA, PhD). Following her doctoral studies she began a postdoctoral fellowship at York University in Toronto. Sasha’s research focuses on Canadian theatre historiography, with a specific interest, to date, in the construction of the performance history of late Mohawk (Kanien’kehá:ka) Six Nations woman E. Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake). She is the recipient of many prestigious research awards and recognitions, and is a member of multiple performance, innovation and historical theatre groups. Alongside her research and teaching work, Sasha sustains a commitment to arts practice and developing her own theatre projects. SCOTT MACINNES completed his degrees from the University of Toronto and UVic in music performance. Highly sought after as a bass trombonist and tenor trombonist with orchestras and chamber groups across Canada, he maintains an active career as a touring, performing and recording artist. Scott has founded many successful groups such as itromboni, Pinnacle Brass,Victoria Brass Collective, and others. Equally at home in classical, contemporary, jazz, R&B, folk, rock, and big band, Scott has performed for British and Dutch royalty, the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and other heads of state. He is the trombone instructor at the University of Victoria and Principal Bass Trombone with theVancouver Island Symphony Orchestra. As a composer and arranger, Scott has been commissioned to write works for large and small ensemble, and recently had his work Listen to Learn premiered at an International Brass Conference. It offers a white settler’s perspective on reconciliation and the work to be done. �Originally from Calgary, SAM MCNALLY began his studies with Laurie Matiation before departing for the University of Victoria where he completed his BMus in performance with Kurt Kellan. In 2015, Sam was appointed principal horn of the Kamloops Symphony. Sam won the UVic concerto competition twice, performing Strauss’ 1st horn concerto (2016) and Schumann’s Konzertstück (2017). After graduating in 2017, Sam travelled to London where he attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (MMus ‘18) on the Orchestral Artistry course. After returning to Canada and continuing his position with Kamloops, Sam won the third horn position in the Victoria Symphony and joined the Faculty at the UVic School of Music. FRANCIS MATHEU  is an independent Filipino theatre artist and international student currently finishing a degree on MFA in Directing at the University of Victoria’s Department of Theatre. In Manila, through Twin Bill Theater — a company he founded with his twin brother — he utilizes theatre as a venue for formal dialogue and intellectual intercourse to address relevant issues that prevail to plague and influence society’s condition. In February, Francis is set to stage Caryl Churchill’s Vinegar Tom as part of Phoenix Theatre’s 2022-23 theatre season. Harnessing theatre as a platform to combat disinformation, he aims to unpack and accentuate Churchill’s exquisite depiction of gender inequality and patriarchal supremacy coerced through the conscious efforts of both ordinary individuals and people in power in institutionalizing baseless fabricated stories against the powerless and the innocent. Being a cultural worker and theatre artist, campaigning against the rapid expansion of disinformation propaganda became a calling that’s too difficult to reserve. A veteran freelance writer and arts and culture specialist, JOHN THRELFALL is the Special Projects & Communications Officer for UVic’s Faculty of Fine Arts and has been a sessional instructor with the Department of Writing since 2006. He is also a Black Cord Priest with Victoria’s 13th House Mystery School Tradition, one of the city’s largest extended covens, and has been a practicing witch since 1986. BRUCE VOGT appears regularly in concert across Canada and also inspires audiences abroad, including multiple tours in Japan and China and solo recitals and chamber music concerts all over Europe. Bruce’s recordings include music of Robert Schumann performed on a restored 1864 Erard, and two volumes of the music of Franz Liszt. In addition to his career as a soloist and chamber musician, Bruce is Professor at the University of Victoria. He is also active in presenting and improvising accompaniments to great films of the silent era, including films by Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd, Griffith, Murnau and others. Weigel Fund. �PROGRAM NOTES & BIOGRAPHIES All for One by Abigail Richardson-Schulte The four playful, high-energy souls that make up the all-female Lafayette String Quartet just love what they do, no less after 36 years together in the profession without even a player change. All for One celebrates a unique ensemble that has delighted so many fellow Canadians in countless across-country tours. A light-hearted opening movement, Amuse-bouche plays to the unique, boisterous sense of fun they bring to their rehearsals. The second movement, Bloom, is a reference to their home base of Victoria, BC, with its renowned gardens, and in reflection of these players growing in relation to each other throughout the seasons of a career they have charted together. The third movement, All for One, is about giving center stage in turn to each of the four characters. The players bring their unique bearing to the conversation. All shine in individual dance versions of the same tune until their ideas fuse to a single voice they express together. Lastly, in And One for All, the discussion leads to questions of a path forward for them and a uniting in strength, optimism, and solidarity. Abigail Richardson-Schulte Composer Abigail Richardson-Schulte was born in Oxford, England, and moved to Canada as a child. Ironically, she was diagnosed incurably deaf at age 5, but, upon moving to Canada her hearing was fully intact within months. Her music has been commissioned and performed by major orchestras, presenters, music festivals and broadcasters including the Festival Présences of Paris. Abigail won first at the prestigious UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers and had her music broadcast in 35 countries. She won the CBC Karen Kieser Prize, the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Best New Opera, the Quenten Doolittle Award from New Works Calgary, the City of Hamilton Arts Award and the Prairie Region Emerging Composer Award. Abigail has been Affiliate Composer with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and curated for their New Creations Festival. In 2012, she wrote a piece on the classic Canadian story, “The Hockey Sweater” by Roch Carrier, in the country’s first triple co-commission by the TSO, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. This orchestral “hit” has had over 160 performances in Canada, frequent repeat performances, and a dozen performances in France. A recording of the work has been released on the Centrediscs label in both French and English with Roch Carrier and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Other notable orchestral works include: a WWI memorial piece, “Song of the Poets”, with choir and orchestra for NACO’s UK tour, co-commissioned by the NACO, The World Remembers, CPO, and TBSO; multiple works for the HPO; and a complete children’s orchestra concert for the CPO and the TSO using Dennis Lee’s “Alligator Pie”. �Abigail has a busy schedule as a composer, teaches composition at the University of Toronto, and is in her tenth year as Composer-in-Residence with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Recent commissions include the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Russell Braun with the Magisterra Soloists, and the Lafayette String Quartet. About the Lafayette String Quartet For over 30 years, the LSQ has been teaching and performing at the University of Victoria. Concert tours have taken them all over North America and Europe. In this, their final year together, the LSQ will be performing throughout Canada and in the United States (visit their webiste for the full schedule). . The LSQ and Nicole Mandryk recently recorded and filmed the newly commissioned work Singing through Generations by Nicole Mandryk and Leila Lustig. Information on its release coming soon. The 2 movements symbolize unity with one another; ideas and motifs are intertwined within Matsubara (Pine Grove) and Umi (Sea), representing a bond between the forest and the sea. — Koshi Thompson Beautiful Hands Beautiful Hands is an exploration of time in relation to timbre, meter, and rhythm. — Liam McDonald-Horak Petals on the Palette of Vincent This suite is a sound painting through my perspective towards multiple works by Vincent Van Gogh. The Starry Night (1889) is unique in its fluidity as a static painting, with all colored lines spinning until forming a dazzling spiral of gravitation. Sunflowers (1886-1888) is filled with flaming gazes of the painter, yet as well as a worship kind of love from the sunflowers back to him. Courtesan (after Eisen, 1887) always makes me fantasize her short quick steps, fast turning a fan when performing the traditional Japanese dance. This series is to be continued indefinitely with more paintings or new angles. — Zihan Zhao Strix Strix uses unexpected techniques to mimic and converse with the call of the screech owl in a spatial setting. — Michelle Wolfenden Undying Mist Three instances of uncertainty... Blindly accepting sound as fact until there is nothing left to be heard... — Isaac Earl Complex Simplicity 5 In this rhythmic piece, the music flows through very commonly used and simple time signatures; however, within each measure (or group of measures), the rhythms do not line up with where the downbeats are naturally placed according to the time signature. Unequal subdivisions of these simple time signatures create new, unusual rhythms. When multiple different rhythmic subdivisions are played simultaneously, rhythmic polyphony is established between the piano and saxophone lines. The main theme of the piece is easily recognizable, but undergoes several unique rhythmic variations as it reappears. Winter Night — Ruby Koep We’ve spent many winter nights together.
