�BIOGRAPHIES
Dr. Michael Keddy is Director of Bands at St. Margaret’s
School, Music Director of the University of Victoria Don
Wright Symphonic Winds and The Greater Victoria Concert
Band. He completed a PhD in Educational Studies (Music
Education/Conducting) at UVic under the supervision of Dr.
Gerald King and was recently appointed Chair of Student
Chapters for the Canadian Music Educators’ Association.
Prior to his time in Victoria, Dr. Keddy completed a Master’s
Degree (Wind Conducting) with Dr. Dale Lonis at the
University of Manitoba and served as Head of Performing Arts at Parry Sound High School in Parry Sound, Ontario. Ensembles under his
direction have consistently been praised for their exceptional musicality. Dr. Keddy
completed the Graduate Diploma in Conducting from the University of Calgary,
conducted and performed in Europe as Associate Conductor (Concert Band) and
Music Director (Jazz Band) of the Ontario Youth Concert Band. He has adjudicated
and provided numerous music clinics at many festivals and venues throughout
Canada, including Music Director and Music Education Clinician at Camp Musical
d’Asbestos in Asbestos, Québec. As a percussionist, Dr. Keddy taught as a member
of the faculty at the University of Manitoba and performed in a variety of venues,
from solo performer at Buckingham Palace to Symphony Orchestras to World
Champion Drum and Bugle Corps.
Sean Quicke, a cellist by birth and a singer by training, is
excited to have spent this year learning about the won
derful world of band with the Don Wright Symphonic
Winds. He is a fourth year student in music education,
completing a Bachelor of Music in a few short weeks. In
September he will begin the Post Degree Professional
Program through the Faculty of Education at UVic. Sean has
studied voice with George Roberts and Susan Young, cello
with John Doerksen, and conducting with Lars Kaario and
Dr. Gerald King. When not making music, he can be found
practicing knot skills, volunteering as a board member for the West Coast Amateur
Musicians’ Society, and following sports in which he’ll never compete, like Formula 1
and yacht racing.
Working with Dr. Keddy and the musicians of the Don Wright Symphonic Winds has
been a privilege and an extremely valuable learning experience. He wishes them all
well as they finish the school year and go on to great things.

�Don Wright Endowment and the Don Wright Symphonic Winds
When Canadian music educator, composer, and philanthropist Don
Wright endowed $1,000,000 for Music Education at the University of
Victoria in 2004, a major initiative of this donation was to provide an
opportunity for all university students to play in an ensemble on campus. The University of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds, funded
from the endowment, offers all members of the UVic community
and beyond, a performance-oriented environment without audition,
where they can learn ensemble techniques, gain important community
contacts, experience the value of ensemble playing in music education,
receive course credit for playing in the group, and have fun. The ensemble concentrates on educational and musical achievements while
providing a source of enjoyment for players and the audience. Music is
selected from a variety of sources, styles, and genres; customary for a
traditional symphonic wind ensemble.
We at UVic are honoured to continue Dr. Wright’s legacy of music
and education by providing performance opportunities for musicians
and presenting diverse concerts to the entire community.

�BIOGRAPHIES
DJ Lochead, aka D.J.S. Loch (1994–1807)
DJ is a third year percussionist at the University of Victoria under the instruction of William Linwood, the Vice-President of the UVic Music Students’
Association, and is currently working towards his Bachelor of Music degree
specializing in Secondary Education. DJ has been Principal Percussionist of
the UVic Wind Symphony since September 2015 and has greatly enjoyed
working under the direction of Dr. Gerald King and Assistant Conductor
David Gagnon. DJ has loved playing percussion ever since his father Ian built
him a drum kit when he was 4 years old. Since then, with the support of his
mother Anita, his sisters Amber and Christa, and his loving girlfriend Alexa,
he has striven for excellence in many areas of music. High school offered
him the amazing experiences of jazz band, rock band, string orchestra, vocal
jazz, and most of all “Drumline,” which had such a significant impact that he
started his own community Drumline “X Corps.” The group, based out of
Chilliwack BC, offers important downtime in between school semesters for
DJ to create music and perform it with friends without the added pressures
of deadlines and assignments. DJ hopes you enjoy the show and wants you
to know that yes, he is continuously typing his name over and over again
during his solo.
B. T. Williams Quartet
The B.T. Williams Quartet was formed in 2012 under the supervision of
Wendell Clanton at the University of Victoria. Dedicated to exploring fresh,
exciting repertoire, the quartet presented their debut recital in 2015 and
represented UVic at the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 9
Conference in Calgary, Alberta, earlier that year. B.T. Williams has participated
in masterclasses with Jean-Michel Goury and the Proteus Quartet and was
recognized as Top Woodwind Chamber Ensemble at the Greater Victoria
Performing Arts Festival in 2014. Together, Austin, Seán, Lee and Zach bring a
diversity of musical interests to their work as active performers, composers
and educators.
Austin Nicholl
Austin Nicholl is a Music Education Major and saxophonist from Kelowna
BC. He is currently in his fifth year of studies at the University of Victoria.
As a Music Education student, Austin has worked towards developing himself
as both a professional musician and educator. He has performed with the
University of Victoria’s Wind Symphony, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and
Chamber Singers, as well as volunteered for events like Music Discoveries
and BandFest. He is an accomplished solo performer with performances in
numerous recitals, as well as most recently premiering a saxophone concerto.
Last year Austin was one of four students selected to represent UVic at the
Midwest Clinic, the largest music education conference in the world.
�After graduation Austin plans to teach in the public school system while still
maintaining an active performance career.
Lee Whitehorne
Perpetually exploring new sounds, Lee Whitehorne is a Victoria-based
multi-instrumentalist and composer with deep roots in jazz, classical and
contemporary art music. Deftly juggling a multitude of saxophones, bassoons
and clarinets within a given performance, he began crafting his voice as an
orchestral and jazz musician across BC’s Lower Mainland. Whitehorne completes his Bachelor of Music at the University of Victoria in 2016 with studies
in saxophone and bassoon. As a composer, his output includes works for
soloist, chamber ensemble and larger forces. Whitehorne currently performs
with a number of university and community ensembles around Victoria,
focused on sharing new music with expanding audiences.
Seán Maynard
Seán Maynard is a saxophonist and composer born and raised in Victoria,
BC. He is currently in his third year of studies in the composition program
at UVic, and his fifth year of music studies overall. A previous member of the
UVic Wind Symphony, he has performed in eleven past concerts on tenor
and alto saxophone (2012–15). He has performed two full solo recitals
(2014 and 2015) and a full recital with his saxophone quartet B.T. Williams
(2015), as well as numerous other performances with groups such as the
Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra, the Meridiem Wind Orchestra, and the
UVic Sonic Lab.
Zachary Smith
Zachary Smith has developed as both a performer and a composer during
his time at UVic. His compositions range in style and instrumentation and
have been performed to great acclaim, including a performance of Theophany
by the UVic Wind Symphony. Over the years his arrangements have also
been played worldwide. Drawing experience from his training as a classical
saxophone performer he recently wrote an alto saxophone concerto which
was premiered earlier this year. He was awarded the Phillip T. Young Memorial Scholarship for academic and musical excellence. After graduation Zach
plans to further his musical studies and pursue his dream of writing music for
film.
David P. Gagnon
Born in Quebec, David studied saxophone and recording at the College de
Sherbrooke before graduating from McGill University in Music with Honors
in Music Technology. He joined the Canadian Forces Reserve in Sherbrooke
in 2003 where he played and eventually conducted until 2012 when he was
accepted as a Regular Force member with the Naden Band of the Royal
Canadian Navy and moved to Victoria. Since then apart from playing saxo-
�phone in the ensemble and as a soloist, you can see him as the Drum Major
in front of the Band on parade or in the recording studio when needed.
In Quebec, David performed with his saxophone quartet and a variety of big
bands and concert bands. He taught saxophone, flute and clarinet and conducted elementary to high school level bands. He also toured Quebec with
the well known singer Dan Bigras conducting his big band and performing at
the Montreal Jazz Festival.
Mr. Gagnon is currently working on a Master of Music Degree in Conducting
under the supervision of Dr. Gerald King.
Dr. Gerald King
Dr. King is Professor of Music at the University of Victoria where he serves
as the conductor of the UVic Wind Symphony and is the Head of Music
Education. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s most respected
conductors, adjudicators, educators and keynote speakers, Dr. King is the recipient of many prestigious honors and awards. In 2003 he was elected into
the prestigious American Bandmasters’ Association, when he served as Guest
Conductor of The United States Army Band (Pershing’s Own), in Washington, DC. In 2012 he was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor of the
internationally recognized Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble in celebration
of the ensemble’s 30th anniversary. As well, he received the BC Music Educators’ Association Honorary Life Award and was also inducted into Phi Beta
Mu (International Fraternity for Wind Band Conductors). In March 2014 he
was chosen to conduct the Ostwald/Sousa award winning composition, Pale
Blue on Deep by American composer Aaron Perrine, with the University of
South Carolina Wind Ensemble. Also, in 2014, Dr. King was appointed as the
International Member of the Western International Band Clinic University
Collegiate Advisory Board. In September 2015 Dr. King was inducted as an
Honorary Member of the Naden Band of the Royal Canadian Navy.
A former student of internationally renowned conductor, Maestro Kazuyoshi
Akiyama, Dr. King’s professional career has taken him throughout Canada,
the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Italy,
France, Spain, Japan, Mexico, Hong Kong, Australia, and Switzerland. Dr. King’s
conducting appearances with regional, national, international honor, and
professional ensembles have been praised for performance quality, artistry,
and creativity. Throughout his career he has been a champion of new music,
premiering over 30 compositions.
Dr. King is also widely recognized as an expert for his ability to link theory
and practice in the field of teaching and learning. Among his many recordings and publications is a chapter in the book, Creativity and Music Education,

Description
An account of the resource
UVic's Wind Symphony is recognized as one of the premiere performing wind ensembles in the Pacific Northwest. The ensemble is in constant demand to perform at festivals and conferences. Recently, the Wind Symphony represented Canada at the Annual WesternInternational Band Conference in Seattle in November, 2002. As well, the Wind Symphony has been a featured guest ensemble at the B.C. Music Educators' Conference. The Wind Symphony provides opportunities for all wind and percussion players in the School. Its repertoire includes transcriptions of orchestral works, concerti, chamber ensembles, large symphonic band works and new music for the concert band. The Wind Symphony regularly features student, faculty and guest solo artists, and has given numerous Canadian and world premieres of contemporary works.

"Drawing inspiration from composers
such as Takemitsu, Debussy, Reich,
and Messiaen as well as from a wide
variety of musical styles, Michael
seeks to compose music which melds
those influences into his own distinct
sound. Over the past four years he has
studied composition with John Celona,
Christopher Butterfield, and guitar
with Alexander Dunn. Michael
composed the music for UVic’s 2016
production of the Tennessee Williams
play Summer and Smoke, which will
be playing at the Phoenix Theatre
from March 10-19. Upon graduating he
plans to pursue an education and career in composing for
film, television, theatre, and other visual mediums.

rich and colourful harmonies. Zach’s
compositions are extremely evocative
and create a beautiful landscape of
emotions across a variety of styles.
Recently one of his works was
premiered and conducted by world
renowned conductor, Dr. Gerald King
at the UVic Wind Symphony Spring
concert. One of his compositions was
also performed to great acclaim at
the UVic Vocal Showcase. Zach has
also done arrangements that have
been played all around the world.
Some of his most influential
composers are John Mackey, Marc
Mellits, and Igor Stravinsky. This year
he was awarded the Phillip T Young
memorial scholarship for academic and musical excellence. He
was placed first alto saxophone at the UVic wind symphony
where he studies composition and saxophone performance.
After graduation Zach plans to further his musical studies and
pursue his dream of writing music for film.

Tonight, the UVic Jazz Ensemble will perform works by Radiohead,
Ornette Coleman, Mittag-Delaga, and jazz standards. Selections will be
announced from the stage. There will be a short intermission half way
through.
There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to
be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment
with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an
unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break
through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible.
These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands
in such a direct way that deliberation cannot interfere.
The resulting pictures lack the complex composition and textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see well
find something captured that escapes explanation.
This conviction that direct deed is the most meaningful reflections, I believe, has prompted the evolution of the extremely
severe and unique disciplines of the jazz or improvising musician.

Béla Bartók: Dance Suite, Sz. 77
Dance Suite was composed for a festival concert held in November 1923 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the merging of the two cities, Buda and Pest, into
one metropol: Budapest. Two other leading composers of the time were commissioned
to write for the same occasion, Zoltán Kodály delivered Psalmus Hungaricus and Ernő
Dohnányi wrote Festival Ouverture, performed by the orchestra of Budapest Philharmonic
Society under the baton of Dohnanyi. The premiere was not particularly well received,
however the overwhelming success of a second performance in 1925 with the Czech
Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague secured a place in the international concert repertoire
for both the orchestral and solo piano version of the Dance Suite.
Since 1905 Bartók had collected and transcribed several hundred traditional melodies
from Hungary to Turkey. The Dance Suite revives the baroque concept of the suite, using
dance tune-like pseudo-quotations that paraphrase tunes from the Romanian (Wallachian), gipsy, Hungarian and Arabic folklore. The 2/4, 4/4 and psalmodizing melodic
structures sound original, however they are all Bartók’s own invention.
A brief melodic Ritornell (an Interlude that remains unchanged) frames the entire
composition, appearing at the end of the first, second and fourth movements, and in the
Finale.
The development of motives is remarkably consequent through the movements. The
first movement is based on minor and major seconds, featuring the idea of the Giouco
delle coppie from the Concerto for Orchestra 20 years later, the second movement begins
with a theme ‘riding’ a minor third, and the bagpipe-like melody in the third movement
reaches the perfect fourth. The fourth movement refers to the Bartókian archetype
“music of the night”, and is organized around pentatonic scales reaching perfect fifths. The
first, second and the ‘chase’ of the Finale strongly allude to The Miraculous Mandarin that
was finished in1924.
The Dance Suite is a virtuoso composition that showcases in a wildly aphorismatic, humorous and playfully grotesque manner elements and ideas that later unfold in Bartók’s
large-scale works.

Claude Debussy: Prélude à L’après-midi d’un faune
After attending the Paris Conservatoire and deciding to pursue composition rather
than an unlikely career as a concert pianist, Debussy’s music was still largely unknown in
the late 1800s. Although initially influenced by Wagner, fin de siècle Paris provided new
inspiration for the composer. Discoveries such as the Javanese gamelan at the Universal
Exposition of 1889 and contact with important Symbolist writers spurred Debussy to
explore new timbres and forms.
The inspiration for Debussy’s Prélude is Stéphane Mallarmé’s symbolist poem, L’après midi
d’un faune. Unlike traditional programmatic works, Debussy’s composition is not a strict
sonic depiction of specific events from the poem; rather, it is an impression of the sensual
reminiscences of the faun. Premiered in 1894, this enigmatic work was so enthusiastically
received by its Parisian audience that the conductor, Gustave Doret, later recounted: “I
had no hesitation in breaking the rule forbidding encores.”
In the Prélude, Debussy eschews conventional musical form and employs elusive tonality to capture the fluid nature of time and narrative in Mallarmé’s poem. For example,
the opening flute solo – a reference to the reed pipe-playing faun – is at first presented
without accompaniment and thus denied a harmonic context; the same motive is
�subsequently imposed over shifting harmonies, lending it an ephemeral quality. Debussy also uses a feeling interruption to create a sense of spontaneity. While most of
the music unfolds with a seamless, organic ease, occasional sparkling bursts of energy
appear from nowhere, perhaps alluding to the spirited nymphs that arouse the passion of Mallarmé’s faun.
Despite its brevity – the work is only around 10 minutes in length – the Prélude à
l’après midi d’un faune is one of Debussy’s most well known compositions and considered by many to be a seminal work of the early modern period. In the words of
Pierre Boulez: “The flute of the Faun brought new breath to the art of music; what
was overthrown was not so much the art of development, as the very concept of
form itself.”

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Romeo and Juliet (Fantasy-Overture)
Tchaikovsky’s Fantasy-Overture on Romeo and Juliet, considered to be his first
masterpiece, is a compact and evocative representation of an immensely popular
source of musical inspiration. While living in Moscow and struggling to find his voice,
Tchaikovsky began corresponding with fellow Russian composer, Mily Balakirev. In
1869, Balakirev suggested Shakespeare’s tragedy as the subject for a concert overture; his advice was extensive, including a proposal of keys for the overture’s themes
and an explanation of how to incorporate elements of the play into a sonata–allegro
framework.
Such prescriptiveness might not normally be conducive to inspired composition, but
Tchaikovsky took well to the proposal and composed a work that shows a mature
command of form, harmony, melody, and drama. While the original version that
premiered in 1870 was unsuccessful, several revisions over the next decade resulted
in the 1880 version that we know today.
The work opens with a solemn chorale that begins a substantial introduction.
Imbued with a sense of inescapable fate, the length and overall slow pace of the
opening conveys a feeling of timelessness or universality, echoing the prologue to
Shakespeare’s play.
The main body of the overture has two distinct themes. The first hot-blooded allegro giusto depicts the fight between the Montagues and Capulets with fast moving
notes, rapid dialogue between winds and strings, and abrupt interjections that evoke
the clanging of swords. As this first theme recedes into the distance, the love theme
emerges with a tender solo for viola and English horn in the lush key of D-flat major.
After a gently rocking closing section that peacefully fades away, the development
begins with quiet agitation. Here, Tchaikovsky intertwines elements of the first theme
with the chorale from the introduction, deftly increasing the tension using repetition
coupled with chromatically rising key areas. A final, desperate statement of the chorale by the trumpets leads directly into the recapitulation, where Tchaikovsky saves
the most extensively orchestrated and passionate version of the love theme for its
return. As this theme seems poised to repeat, the Montague-Capulet feud interrupts
and drives the work toward a sombre coda. Despite the tragic ending of the story, a
final statement of the overture’s opening chorale emerges in B major, and the work
concludes with the feeling that above all, love triumphs.

Evan Hesketh
Evan Hesketh began studying violin at age seven with Yasuko Eastman, who also
introduced him to the viola a few years later. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree
from the University of Victoria, where he studied violin with Ann Elliott-Goldschmid
and viola with Joanna Hood and Yariv Aloni. Further studies led to a Master of Music
degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Robert Vernon,
Jeffrey Irvine, and Kirsten Docter. Evan has played in masterclasses for Pinchas Zukerman, James Dunham, Roger Tapping, Atar Arad, and Steven Dann.
An award-winning chamber musician, Evan was a member of the Ariadne String
Quartet, prizewinners at the 2012 Fischoff Competition, and the 2012 Coleman
Competition. Quartet studies have been with members of the Lafayette, Cleveland,
Cavani, Miro, Juilliard, Brentano, and Schoenberg quartets.
Currently, Evan studies conducting at the University of Victoria on a full scholarship
with Ajtony Csaba. He has conducted the UVic Orchestra, Victoria Civic Orchestra,
and festival orchestras in Maine and New Hampshire.
Ajtony Csaba
Ajtony Csaba, born in Cluj, Romania, began his studies on the cello and later piano
and composition in Budapest at the Academy of Music. He began studying conducting in Vienna and Budapest with Uroš Lajovic, Peter Eötvös, Zoltán Pesko, Zsolt Nagy,
Lucas Vis and Antoni Wit. He was awarded many prizes as a conductor and composer, and was a semi-finalist in the first competition for opera in Cluj, Romania.
Csaba has had numerous concerts in Hungary and Austria with orchestras including
UMZE, Sinfonietta Baden, Webern Sinfonietta, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, and
Danubia Orchestra. In the 2003/04 season he was the assistant conductor and tutor
of the Academy Orchestra Budapest and in 2005 was invited to be the assistant
conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra with their contemporary program. He made his conducting debut in the Viennese Musikverein with the
RSO (Radio-Symphonieorchester, Wien) in 2007.
Since 2006 Csaba has served as the chief conductor of the Central European
Chamber Orchestra, and led the orchestra on a tour in China (performances including halls in Shenzhen, Lanzhou and in the Parliament in Beijing), with return engagements in 2007 and 2009. Ajtony Csaba has been the leader of the Vienna Jeunesse
Choir since 2007. In 2008 he conducted at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for
New Music and was assistant at the Salzburg Festspiele. In 2008 he conducted the
EuroMed Youth Orchestra in Damaskus, Syria.
In the past seasons Csaba conducted the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble
Tsilumos at the Montreal New Music Festival and the Brazilian SiMN Festival in
Curitiba, and the Hungarian Symphony Orchestra Miskolc.
Csaba has served as music director of the University of Victoria Orchestra and
Sonic Lab since 2010, where he also teaches conducting and the history of conducting.

Since its inception in 1969, the Orchestra has performed most of the standard repertoire, including all nine Beethoven symphonies, most of the later compositions of Haydn and Mozart, as well as major works of Brahms, Schubert, Stravinsky, Bruckner, Schoenberg, and others. Each year, members of the orchestra join with performance faculty to form the "Concerto Orchestra" to present the annual Concerto Concert, which features student soloists selected by competition.
