Additional Sources for Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage, Première Année - Suisse
(Liszt takes excerpts from Lord Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and Ètienne Pivert de Senancour’s Oberman)

Chapelle de Guillaume Tell (William Tell’s Chapel)
One for allAll for one

…I feel I exist in order to be consumed by ungovernable
desires, to drink in the seductiveness of a fantastical
world, to stand aghast at its voluptuous error.
-Senancour, Oberman, letter 63

Au lac de Wallenstadt (At Lake Wallenstadt)
…Thy contrasted lake
With the wild world I dwelt in, is a thing
Which warns me, with its stillness, to forsake
Earth’s troubled waters for a purer spring.
-Byron

Au bord d’une source (Beside a Spring)
Young nature’s games
Commence in the
Babbling coolness
- Friedrich Schiller

Orage (Storm)
But where of ye, oh tempests! is the goal?
Are ye like those within the human breast?
Or do you find, at length, like eagles, some high nest?
-Byron

Vallée d’Obermann (Oberman’s Valley)
Could I embody and unbosom now
That which is most within me, -could I wreak
My thoughts upon expression, and thus throw
Soul, heart, mind, passions, feelings, strong or weak,
All that I would have sought, and all I seek,
Bear, know, feel, and yet breathe - into one word,
And that word were Lightning, I would speak;
But as it is, I live and die unheard,
With a most voiceless thought, sheathing it as a sword.
-Byron, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, canto 3, verse 97

Unutterable sensitivity, charm and torment of our empty
years; immense awareness of a nature that everywhere
overwhelms and is impenetrable; all-embracing passion,
indifference, advanced wisdom, voluptuous freedom, all
the needs and deep sorrows that a mortal heart can hold,
I felt, I suffered in that memorable night. I took a dark
step towards the age of weakness; I swallowed up ten
years of my life.
-Senancour, Oberman, letter 4

Èglogue
The morn is up again, the dewy morn,
With breath all incense, and with cheek all bloom,
Laughing the clouds away with playful scorn,
And living as if earth contained no tomb! - - -Byron

Le Mal du pays [Heimweh] (Homesickness)
It is in sounds that nature has placed the strongest
expression of the romantic character …Smells quickly
arouse great sensations, but they are vague ones: while
the sensations of sight seem rather to engage the
intellect than the heart: one admires what one sees, but
one feels what one hears.
-Senancour, Oberman, letter 38

Les Cloches de Genève (The Bells of Geneva)
…Midnight silence; the lake
Was calm, the sky starry…
We sailed far away from the shore
-Liszt?

What do I want? What am I? What should I make of nature
…Every cause is invisible, every end deceptive; every
form changes, every time-span works itself out:

I live not in myself, but I become
Portion of that around me.
-Byron

Sin tu Amor
Translated by Arthur Mendel
Amor de mi vida,
ven a mi!
Sin tu amor,
Para que sirve la vida?
Sin nunca ver en tus ojos la ale gria,
Sin nunca ver en tus labios la son risa,
Para que sirve la vida?
No siendo mia,
Seria feliz,
y la vida pasaria,
A tus pies,
Murmurando “Yo te adoro!”

Boloved O my life!
Come, come to me!
Without your love
Where is the joy of living?
Seeing no more your dear eyes alight with
gladness,
No more the smile, on your lips, of love’s sweet
madness,
What is my reason for living?
With you not mine,
Where is the joy of living?
Now that another sees your eyes alight with
gladness,
Now that another son your lips tastes love’s
sweet madness,
What is my reason for living?
But if you were mine,
If your eyes turned to me, dear,
If it were to me that your dear lips murmured, “I
love you!”,
Ah, what joy were mine!
All my life I would be, dear,
By your side, whispering softly, “I adore you!”

Asturiana
Translated by Jaqueline Cockburn
Por ver si me consolaba,
arrimeme a un pino verde,
Por verme llorar, lloraba.
Y el pino como era verde,
por verme llorar, lloraba!

To see if it might console me
I drew near a green pine.
To see me weep, it wept.
And the pine, since it was green,
wept to see me weeping!

PROGRAM NOTES
Pranav Ranjit is a composer currently based in Tallinn, Estonia. Sivakumar’s works explore themes of space and
texture, incorporating sounds from the natural world, influences from the Carnatic music of southern India, and
the contrasting extremes of fullness and silence.
A recipient of the Eisner Prize in the Creative Arts, Sivakumar is currently pursuing a MA in composition at the
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, studying with Tõnu Kõrvits and Helena Tulve and having previously
completed undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley under the tutelage of Ken Ueno. Sivakumar’s music has been
performed by violinist Dennis Kim, flutist Sarah Brady, cellist Kivie Cahn-Lipman, and guitarist Evan Taucher, among
others.
Dutch ‘avant pop’ composer JacobTV (Jacob ter Veldhuis, 1951) started as a rock musician and studied
composition and electronic music with Luctor Ponse and Willem Frederik Bon at the Groningen Conservatoire. He
received the Composition Prize of the Netherlands in 1980 and became a full time composer, who soon made a
name for himself with melodious compositions, straight from the heart and with great effect.
JacobTV’s so-called Boombox repertoire, for live instruments with a grooving sound track based on speech melody,
became internationally popular. With around 1000 world wide performances a year, JacobTV is nowadays one of
the most performed European composers.

Of French nationality, Ida Gotkovsky grew up in a family of musicians. Her studies at the Conservatoire National
Supérieur de Musique in Paris won her numerous first prizes. Ida Gotkovsky is known for a broad range of works,
amongst which chamber music, symphonic works, instrumental, vocal, and lyric pieces are widely represented.
Since the beginning of her career, the character and form of her works have won her many prizes, including: Prix
Lily Boulanger - Prix Blumenthal - Premier Prix du Référendum Pasdeloup - Prix International de Divonnes les Bains
- Médaille de la Ville de Paris - Grand Prix Musical de la Ville de Paris - three prizes from the Institut de France Golden Rose (USA), and many more.
Christian Lauba is a French composer, born in Sfax (Tunisia) in 1952. He studied piano with Suzanne Marty and
composition at the Conservatoire de Bordeaux in the class of Michel Fusté-Lambezat. In 1994, he was awarded the
first prize in the Berlin International Composition Competition (Institut für neue Musik).
From 2004-2006, Lauba was Musical Director of l’Orchestre National Bordeaux-Aquitaine and in residence in
l’Opéra de Bordeaux, composing a Ballet Zatoichi for Charles Jude and Carlotta Ikeda. He composed an opera after
The Time Machine by HG Welles on a proposition of Richard Ducros and a libretto by Daniel Mesguich.
Rio Houle is a composer from Edmonton, Alberta, and is studying for his Master's in music composition at UVic. He
likes to go on walks, he has two cats back home. He spends most of his time looking at tiny, strange symbols and
scenes found in thoughts and in everyday life. He likes to share his findings in music. This piece is dedicated to
homemade Mannequins, singing in basements and behind backyard bushes.
Drawing from inspirations as diverse as Medieval chant to contemporary pop, the music of composer and
conductor Evan Williams (b. 1988) explores the thin lines between beauty and disquieting, joy and sorrow, and
simple and complex, while often tackling important social and political issues. Williams’ catalogue contains a broad
range of work, from vocal and operatic offerings to instrumental works, along with electronic music.
Williams has received awards and recognition from the American Prize, the National Federation of Music Clubs,
ASCAP, Fellowships from the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and in 2018, was chosen as the Detroit
Symphony’s inaugural African-American Classical Roots Composer-in-Residence. He currently serves as the Steven
R. Gerber Composer-in-Residence for the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia.

Kayleigh Francis is from the class of Professor Wendell Clanton.
This recital is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements
for the Master of Music (Performance) program.
Reception to follow in the Lounge.

Thank you to everyone who has made this recital possible: family, friends, colleagues, professors, and audience
members. All the support and love you have provided me over the years is invaluable. A special thank you to Josh
Haskins – I truly would not be here today without all your love and support over the past six years.
