It presents an opportunity to reconnect with our musicians and audiences all over the world, and this renewal was at the front of my mind when composing this optimistic and forward-moving concert opener. Every section of the ensemble has a key role here, but none more so than percussion and piano who provide momentum and rhythmic drive throughout the work. I hope you will find the piece to be uplifting and hopeful of the renewal of wind ensemble music as we come out of Covid-19 and back to a more familiar way of celebrating our art. © Matt Klohs Hikari (Simple and Clean) by Hikaru Utada / arranged by Nishant Amatya One of the most well-known singer-songwriters in Japan, Hikaru Utada wrote Hikari as part of a collaboration with Square Enix in the early 2000s in creating and promoting the video game Kingdom Hearts. Since then, this piece has become a video game classic, and representative of the entire Kingdom Hearts franchise. Kingdom Hearts series composer,Yoko Shimomura, took Utada’s original pop-folk tune and completely revamped it for an orchestra. This arrangement is largely based on Shimomura’s orchestral version and attempts to faithfully score it for a wind ensemble and capture the power of the original. © Nishant Amatya Jubilo by Fergal Carroll Jubilo meaning ‘joyful’ was commissioned to celebrate the birthday of a man, Richard Bassett, “who loved life and lived well!” Carroll’s fingerprint (very Irish) rhythmic style is in evidence but remarkably user friendly. The work is basically in 9/8 but with significant metric variations. The composer writes, “I always found mixed meters (over a definite pulse) extremely stimulating. Playing in orchestra pits as a boy, I came across musicals such as Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar which used them extensively. In college I very much got into the work of Igor Stravinsky, and to a lesser extent some of the minimalists, like John Adams. Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale is a particular favorite of mine for this reason.” © Fergal Carroll Letters by Kelijah Dunton Commissioned by the College Band Directors National Association, Letters is a piece that represents overcoming a romantic betrayal. My goal was to illustrate the concept as if it was a story. The “story” of the piece is “told” from the lens of the person who was betrayed by their partner. The piece goes through several iterations of the same melody but each time it’s different, taking on a different identity entirely. Sometimes nostalgic and reminiscent, to bitter, menacing, full of malice and regret. © Kelijah Dunton �Salt March by Aakash Mittall While the heart and soul of Salt March For Wind Ensemble is a tribute to Mohandas K. Gandhi’s historical protest and the music of that moment, fragments of the marching music prevalent during my childhood are woven into this composition. Cemented by four years of competitive high school marching band, marching in local parades, and playing marches at the town’s veterans club, the march became ingrained in my musical DNA. The march became part of my life again during the 2020 pandemic. Black Lives Matter and the Women’s March spotlit the power of the march as an effective type of non-violent protest that is still in use today. As the pandemic raged on, the idea of expressing our current climate of activism by writing a piece about Gandhi’s Salt March came to mind again and again. I wanted the piece to be an opportunity to study an important point in history and remind students that they already have the power to make positive change in the world. My intent for Salt March was to remind us of where we have been and relate that history to the activism taking place right now. Salt March is a contemporary imagining of the 1930 protest rather than a historically accurate rendering. However, I wanted to arrange a song that was sung during the original march to nestle a seed of that history in this piece. © Aakash Mittal BIOGRAPHIES Giuseppe Pietraroia Giuseppe Pietraroia is Associate Conductor for both the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera. As a guest conductor he has been engaged by l’Orchestre Métropolitain, Orchestra London, Vancouver Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Hamilton Philharmonic, Okanagan Symphony, Regina Symphony, Kingston Symphony and Thunder Bay Symphony. His extensive opera engagements with Pacific Opera include productions of Il Barbiere Di Siviglia, La Traviata, La Boheme, Lucia di Lammermoor, Norma, Rigoletto, Manon Lescaut, Madama Butterfly, La Cenerentola, Tosca and Let’s Make an Opera/The Little Sweep. In addition, he has conducted productions for l’Opéra de Montréal, l’Opéra de Québec, Opera Lyra Ottawa, Edmonton Opera, Opera New Brunswick, Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program, and l’Institut Canadien d’Art Vocal in Montreal. With Victoria Choral Society where he was Music Director for 7 seasons, Maestro Pietraroia conducted performances of Handel’s Messiah and Mozart’s Mass in C minor with the Victoria Symphony, a choreographed production of Orff ’s Carmina Burana in collaboration with Ballet Victoria, Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, David Fanshawe’s African Sanctus, and the Duruflé and Fauré Requiem. Maestro Pietraroia has recorded a CD with soprano Marie-Josée Lord and l’Orchestre Métropolitain for the ATMA label, which won a Felix award granted by l’ADISQ and was also nominated for a Juno award. Giuseppe Pietraroia is the recipient of the George and Jane Heffelfinger Pacific Opera Victoria Artist of the Year Award and the Canada Council’s Jean-Marie Beaudet Award in Orchestral Conducting. �Jamie Davis BMus (UVic) Jamie Davis (he/him) is in his final year of studies in the Master of Music Performance (Wind Conducting) program at the University of Victoria guided by Dr. Steven Capaldo and Dr. Gerald King. Tonight’s performance is presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for his master’s degree. His research focusses on diverse composers and their works for wind band. Jamie is also the director of bands at Reynolds Secondary School in Victoria, BC. For eighteen years his high-school ensembles have been heard in performance locally, provincially, and internationally. Ensembles under his direction consistently receive festival ratings of Superior or Gold, are in demand for concert and parade appearances, and receive numerous accolades for their performances. Additionally, he has served as an executive member of the BC Music Educators Association as secretary, vice-president, and president from 2012 – 2017. As a trombonist Jamie has performed with the Meridiem Wind Orchestra, Hugh Fraser’s Bonehenge, Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra, and the South Island Wind Ensemble. His principal teachers include Ian Mcdougall, Hugh Fraser, and Brad Howland. Nishant Amatya BMus (UVic) Nishant Amatya (he/him) is a Nepalese-Canadian educator, composer and arranger from Surrey, BC and currently residing in Victoria on the unceded traditional territories of the Songhees, Esquimalt, W̱SÁNEĆ and lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. He completed his BMus (Education) at UVic in 2023 and is currently completing his PDPP (BEd). His first work, Journey’s End, was premiered by the UVic Wind Symphony in October 2022, and he has composed/arranged for various other groups, including the UVic Big Band, UVic Vocal Jazz, Kasperl Quintet, and Isabel Leong’s Ghibli Jazz Orchestra. Allegro moderato, tempo di marcia �MARTHA COOKE LEGACY FUND With a generous gift from the estate of Martha Cooke, The Martha Cooke Visiting Artist Fund presents the first of three visits to the University of Victoria School of Music by renowned pianist Minsoo Sohn. The Martha Cooke bequest also establishes two substantial funds for piano maintenance at the School of Music. We are delighted that Minsoo Sohn will return to present concerts and masterclasses in October of both 2024 and 2025. All ticket proceeds from Mr. Sohn’s concerts will go to the piano maintenance legacy fund. BIOGRAPHY Minsoo Sohn is a Korean American pianist known for his musical intelligence and masterful virtuosity. Described by the New York Times as “a genuine artist, with a thoughtful and poetic interpretation” and the Boston Globe as “born to play the piano,” Sohn continues to expand his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his day. Sohn has toured extensively throughout North and South America, Europe, Israel and Korea and has appeared in important venues and festivals. Sohn is particularly noted for his interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. The New York Times praised his Honens-label recording of the work as a “beautifully articulated, radiant interpretation,” placing it one of the top classical recordings of 2011. His recordings have also received critical acclaim from the New Yorker Magazine, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Gramophone Magazine, the Calgary Herald and Toronto Star, among many others. In 2020, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Mr. Sohn concluded his four year immersion in the composer’s music, which has included concert performances, recordings and writings. Over the course of his Beethoven project, Mr. Sohn performed and recorded the composer’s thirty-two sonatas in a series of recitals at the Seoul Arts Center, and in recording sessions at Tongyeong Concert Hall. The recital series also included Beethoven’s monumental Diabelli Variations and Bagatelles. Sony Classical released the highly anticipated nine-album set of “Complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas” in the Fall of 2020. Mr. Sohn previously held positions at Michigan State University and Korean National University of Arts before joining his alma mater,The New England Conservatory of Music, where he began teaching in the Fall of 2023. He is indebted to Russell Sherman and Wha Kyung Byun for guiding him to follow his bliss. A Canadian concert violinist born in Oxford, England, Lupin was awarded a scholarship for violin studies at the University of Cincinnati at age six, and at the age of seven, he was accepted to study with Sigmund Effron, the concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He won the Heifetz Scholarship Award for two years intensive private study with Jascha Heifetz in Beverly Hills and at the University of Southern California. His other remarkable teachers include Ivan Galamian in New York as well as Joseph Gingold and Franco Gulli in Bloomington, Indiana. Lupin made his television debut at the age of seven, his London début with the London Mozart Players in the Queen Elisabeth Hall in 1981 and his solo début the same year at the Wigmore Hall. He has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. A pianist of unparalleled skill and sensitivity, Ayke Agus is a native of Indonesia and began her concert career on both the violin and the piano at the age of 7. She will forever be known as the last accompanist during the last fifteen years of the world renowned Russian American violinist, Jascha Heifetz’s life. She performed as pianist with Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky in chamber music concerts. Dr. Agus has given masterclasses and lecture concerts around the world including the St. Petersburg Conservatory (Russia), the Jascha Heifetz concert Hall in Vilnius, Lithuania, the Juilliard School of Music, the Royal Academy of Music in London (RAC), New England Conservatory, Boston University, the Royal Music Conservatory of Birmingham (UK), Rice University (Houston), UCLA, The Yang Siew Toh (YST) National Music Conservatory of Singapore, University of Indonesia in Jakarta, and all the major cities of Indonesia. Praised for her “meltingly beautiful solos” (The Detroit News) and performances of “depth and insight” (Times Colonist), Pamela Highbaugh Aloni performs regularly as a recitalist and chamber musician and is an Associate Professor at UVic where she teaches cello, chamber music and string pedagogy. A founding member of the prize-winning Lafayette String Quartet, she and her colleagues celebrated 37 years of musical life together before taking their final bow in August 2023. Highlights with the LSQ included performing all sixteen Beethoven string quartets, a 30th anniversary Shostakovich Cycle, a Second Viennese School project, the commissioning of five new quartets by women composers, and the initiation of the Lafayette Health Awareness Forum. Ms. Highbaugh Aloni coaches the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra cello section, and at the Sooke Chamber Music workshop. She has performed with the Vetta Ensemble of Vancouver, Victoria Chamber Orchestra, Victoria Summer Festival, Sooke Philharmonic, Eine Kleine Summer Music, Chamber Music San Juan, and was principal cellist with the Galiano Ensemble.
