A cruel logger fells the tree, which crashes to earth, bouncing in the underbrush to stillness. But the tree slowly rises again from its root, beginning the journey as it did before – an enduring tree spirit. PAMELA HIGHBAUGH ALONI Praised for her “meltingly beautiful solos” (The Detroit News) and performances of “depth and insight” (Times Colonist), cellist Pamela Highbaugh Aloni is a founding member of the prize-winning Lafayette String Quartet. She is an Associate Professor at the University of Victoria where she has been teaching cello, chamber music and string pedagogy since 1991. The Lafayette Quartet celebrated over 37 years of musical life together with the same four members and took their final bow in August 2023. Highlights of their years include a celebration in 2000 performing all sixteen of Beethoven’s string quartets, a 30th anniversary Shostakovich Cycle, a Second Viennese School project, the commissioning of five new quartets by women composers, and the initiation of the Lafayette Health Awareness Forum.Their CBC recording “Death and the Maiden” was awarded “Outstanding Classical Recording of the Year” by the Western Canada Music Awards. An enthusiastic and devoted teacher, Ms. Highbaugh Aloni served for ten years on the faculty at the Courtenay Youth Music School and Festival and has been the coach for the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra cello section since 2004. She performs both as a soloist and recitalist and has been a guest artist with the Vetta Ensemble of Vancouver, Victoria Chamber Orchestra, Victoria Summer Festival, Sooke Philharmonic, Eine Kleine Summer Music, Chamber Music San Juan, and served as principal cellist with the Galiano Ensemble from 2000-2018. Pamela plays on a George Craske cello made in England, 1850. JANE HAYES Since her debut with the Toronto Symphony, pianist, Jane Hayes’ concerts have taken her across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia and Mexico. An active recording artist, she has over 30 CDs available on many prestigious labels. Jane moved to BC in 1993 to become a faculty member in the newly opened Music Department �of Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Her passion for teaching was recognized when she received the 2015 Distinguished Teaching Award in the Faculty of Arts. She has established a strong link with Chinese music schools, giving a series of recitals and master classes in 2017 at universities and private music schools to foster professional development among Chinese piano professors. In recent years she has appeared on concert stages in every combination from duo through large ensemble, as soloist with orchestra to chamber collaborator. She has been a partner of such esteemed artists as cellist Harvey Shapiro, violinist Robert Davidovici, and flutists Julius Baker and Bonita Boyd. Jane’s Four Jays performance for Vetta Chamber Music was recognized with a nomination for the 2021 Western Canada Music Awards as was Sassicaia, a CD devoted to Canadian repertoire for clarinet and piano. Her recent performance on a CD commemorating the life and musical legacy of composer Nikolai Korndorf was listed on CBC’s Top 22 of 2022. As an active member of Vancouver’s Turning Point Ensemble,Yarilo Ensemble and the Stellar Jays, recent tours have taken her to Spain and Eastern Europe. Since leaving Kwantlen in 2020, Jane is maintaining an active performing, recording, teaching and adjudicating career. No matter what hat she wears, her focus is always on communication through music, talking a language that doesn’t need words. LEILA LUSTIG Leila Lustig studied music composition at UCLA and the University of WisconsinMadison, earning MA and PhD degrees. She spent 14 years in radio as a music producer and program director, producer of a number of classical music programs for the National Public Radio and American Public Radio networks, and creator/host of the long-running series “Music in Buffalo” for WNED-FM in Buffalo, NY, for which she composed the theme music. She was president of the Composers’ Alliance of Buffalo for two years. Although she did not follow the usual academic path following graduation, she continued writing music, emigrating to Canada and becoming a citizen in 2003. Her output includes music for voice, choral and chamber groups, orchestra and wind ensemble. One of her major works is a cantata in memory of her father, “Angels in My Way,” using as texts the Hebrew Kaddish, the Gloria from the Latin Mass, and excerpts from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poetry. She has set to music all 26 poems in Barbara Holender’s “Ladies of Genesis,” intimate monologues by women in the Bible, combining the female voice with various combinations of instruments. Leila also co -composed, “Singing Through Generations” with singer/drummer Nicole Mandryk which is one of the five works commissioned by the Lafayette String Quartet for their BK Weigel commissioning project. He was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Alberta in 2018 and is now an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. The Toronto Star’s review of Milton’s CD 1890 exemplifies the type of artistry he is known for, acclaiming his playing for its “emotionally expressive, powerfully intimate journeys through beautiful harmonies and counterpoint.” During his university career, Milton was the recipient of numerous teaching- and research-related awards, including a prestigious McCalla Professorship for his significant contributions to research, teaching, and learning. Based at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose, he also taught graduate-level piano pedagogy courses in Edmonton. Milton continues to be active as an artist. He has performed in live and broadcast performances as solo recitalist, collaborative pianist, and soloist with orchestra. Solo recital engagements have taken him to China, Ireland, France, Germany, the US, and Japan. He has released five recordings that feature him as a soloist and collaborative pianist performing pieces drawn from the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Two of the recordings highlight works by renowned American composer Frederic Rzewski, including one piece commissioned by Milton. He holds a Doctor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Alberta, where his primary mentors were Robert Stangeland and Stéphane Lemelin. Alongside his activities as a pianist, Milton has published as a researcher and composer, has performed as organ recitalist, and today trains and competes in triathlon events. Two publications serve to illustrate his unique perspectives and diverse interests. “Music, the Liberal Arts, and Rural Identity: The Not-So-Straight-Road” appears in the book Roads Taken: The Professorial life, Scholarship in Place, and the Public Good. The chapter traces Milton’s career and the distinctive, quality teaching that can occur on a smaller-sized liberal arts campus in a rural location. “Minding the music: Neuroscience, video recording, and the pianist” is found in the International Journal of Music Education. The article offers best practices in the use of digital video equipment by pianists through the examination of intersections between neuroscience, contemplative studies, and sport psychology. Scott and Clare’s concert programs feature their own creative transformations of classical pieces into anything from Happy Birthday to Japanese pop, as well as standard duet repertoire and works by living composers. Scott has written nearly 100 piano duet arrangements and the number keeps growing! The Meeks Duo has been publishing new videos every week on YouTube since March 2021. Their video interview series The Meeks Talk features engaging conversations with musicians from across the world, and they have been featured as guests on several other YouTube channels. Their music has been played on CBC and Fairchild Radio, and their albums are available worldwide on all streaming platforms. Keen on promoting living composers and arrangers, Clare and Scott have had several new works and arrangements written for them, and they often perform works by lesser-known and female composers. As members of their community, Clare and Scott raised funds for local flood relief from the sale of their 2021 Christmas album, and performed 22 weekly live-streamed recitals in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, to entertain audiences worldwide during the lockdown period. Clare and Scott have performed at such prestigious venues as the Taiwan National Concert Hall (Taipei, Taiwan), the Kay Meek Centre (North Vancouver, Canada) and the Vancouver Playhouse (Vancouver, Canada), as well as at museums, art galleries, private residences, universities, churches, and outdoor performances. Playing the piano together was how Scott and Clare first met, and they formed The Meeks Duo shortly after they got married in 2013. They love the unique closeness of two musicians sharing a single instrument, and aspire to share the love of four-hand piano music with you! A winner of the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society Bursary competition, pianist Chia-Hui Clare Yuan (UVic BMus ‘06) is an acclaimed pianist and teacher in the greater Vancouver area. She recently made her debut as The Meeks Duo at the prestigious Taiwan National Concert Hall in Taipei with her husband, Scott Meek. Clare made her debut as soloist with the Metropolitan Philharmonic of New York Orchestra, performing the Brahms D minor Piano Concerto. She took on the role of conductor to lead the Vancouver Orchestra Club Symphony for one season, and toured with the clarinet, cello and piano ensemble, Trio Dolce. As part of The Meeks Duo, Clare has performed in many series around British Columbia, Ms. Yuan continues to find ways to take her piano skills further. She currently studies with legendary piano duo, Kenneth Broadway and Ralph Markham. She also studied with renowned Canadian pianist Jane Coop at University of British Columbia. Ms. Yuan received her Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in New York, studying with Dr. Arkady Aronov. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, studying with Professor Eva Solar-Kinderman. She studied with Christine Eschman prior to her undergraduate studies. Clare currently resides in Vancouver, Canada with her husband. She is an active performer and has been a frequent guest on FairChild Radio and FairChild Television, discussing topics about music learning. She also runs her own piano studio, with the hopes of inspiring young talents to find their love for music. Described by the Winnipeg Free Press as a “consummate musician” who plays with “near-impossible fluidity” and “total physical involvement and passion,” Canadian pianist Scott Meek is a highly active and sought-after chamber musician, collaborative pianist, and teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia. He performs and records regularly with his wife pianist Clare Yuan as part of The Meeks Duo, and his extensive repertoire of collaborative works with other instruments includes over 170 complete concertos and sonatas. Scott Meek is a top prize winner in several international and national competitions, and he has performed as soloist with the Edmonton, Toronto, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras, as well as with several orchestras in the USA. Meek has performed in prestigious halls all over the world, including the Taiwan National Concert Hall (Taipei, Taiwan), Kennedy Centre (Washington, DC), Roy Thompson Hall (Toronto, ON), Winspear Centre (Edmonton, AB), and Centennial Concert Hall (Winnipeg, MB). Scott Meek studied with Carole Pollard in Winnipeg before attended Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, to earn his Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts (East Asian Studies) degrees, studying under Alvin Chow.
